it’s not about being rich, i usually sell second hand or trade in, i couldn’t imagine spending the full $1k+ every year..

Depends if you want to use 5G and appreciate a 6.7" display. I think it's the biggest form factor change since 2017.
Yes 5G would probably be the only thing to coax me. But it also has to be in our area, which I highly doubt. I like the large screens, but 6.7" seems to be excessive, even to me. When will they stop? Will we have the iPhone XXX like in the memes bigger than an iPad?

Are you kidding me? This thing cost more than a grand! If I can't keep it at least three years, it won't feel like it was worth the money.

Are some of you really buying a new top-end iPhone EVERY YEAR? Must be nice to be rich!

No it’s called leasing a phone. Pay the monthly pymts while I use the device and trade it in for the next iPhone. Crazy if some peeps buy it in full every year

I doubt many people buy a phone in full and happily lose £500 after just 12 months. You’ve got to keep it 2-3 years really to get the worth out of it I would say and not a lot seems to change to warrant getting a new phone each year IMO. The whole phone business has gotten very boring since the development race of 2011-2016.

At least an iPhone can do a crazy number of different things for 1K instead of just holding up a monitor.

You could also ask the question; what does a £1k iPhone do that a £699 iPhone doesn’t?

Nothing except for the camera improvements, you could say the same for iPads. They are just all different sizes with a LCD or OLED screen. TID or FID.
I did the same on a $50 SE i got off gumtree as i do on my $2K 11 pro.

I am the only one in my family and extended that gets caught up in the yearly phone upgrade, my wife and kids phones i get via gumtree and they use till they die or a good deal comes along and i swap them out, usually brand new or close with huge discounts, and i do a bit of buying and flipping on gumtree so that helps, and my phone is a tax right off.

But the 11 pro is the best and could be the last version of the 5.8" so i will be keeping it and getting my moneys worth. I have never got on well with anything bigger than 8/X/11 pro size, even XR i had was bit too big, although was a good work phone.

I do have Max envy sometimes but then remember what they are like to lug around, and at home i mostly use my 11" iPad. Also getting a new car with CarPlay helped for maps etc.

It is usually the opposite. Those that look rich outwardly are usually not and those who don’t are more likely to be the next door millionaires.

It looks like the 2020 iPhones are physical changes but same Face ID, upgraded cameras, etc.... not a super big jump that will change they way I interact with my iPhone. So I’d rather keep it. I really want Touch ID with Face ID combo for those times when the phone is on the table or when you wake up first thing in the morning. I’m putting $100 a month towards my upgrade. By September I’ll have $900 but if it’s not a big upgraded I’ll wait. I usually pay cash for an unlocked iPhone. I hear 2021 is when the Touch ID through the screen will appear according to Ming G Kho. Hopefully that comes true.

Noooooooooo! If I don't have the latest and greatest my friends would surely think less of meee! How could I go on?

2020 is the return of Qualcomm so i will be getting the 12 or whatever it’s called

iPhone 12 seems promising in that it will have 5G , possibly an underscreen finger scanner etc
If Apple comes through with all these features then it might be worth upgrading
Is the finger scanner expected to replace FaceID? Hopefully not.

IMHO Qualcomm is a superior chip. Sure people will disagree but this was hashed out during the iPhone 7/Plus moment when they decided to start using two suppliers.

Intel is dying, if not dead, and for good reason. They suck. They lag behind Qualcomm by years, not months. So I can imagine many people are going to be happy to have a Qualcomm chip again.

Me? I'll get one eventually but I need to see just how badly 5G hits on battery life and stability. On my OnePlus McLaren, the battery was horrid. It got very hot, like turn itself off hot. I can't be an early adopter again after that experience.

I feel 5G will have more of an impact on home broadband etc rather then smartphones. I mean, even now with 4G I cant think of a time where I have had to wait for a web page to load or a video to start streaming. Its all quite seamless for me.

Nevertheless, I tend to purchase a new handset every year and sell the previous years handset to offset the cost. Its worked well for me over the years, but now I feel as though smartphones are at a stage where they are becoming way too expensive. I mean, ridiculously expensive. To the point where I can buy a high spec laptop for the same cost as a smartphone. This year, when getting the 11 Pro Max I had to stop and think. It was the camera and night photos that swayed me in the end. But I'm highly likely to skip next year and wait for 2021. Even though I'm fortunately in a well paid job where I am living quite comfortably, I still like to watch what I spend, and I'm at the point where I would rather spend on other things then a new smartphone every year......it'll have to be some huge upgrades to sway me......

I don't have the Pro Max but my XS Max has been rock solid. I will only get the 12 if it has smaller/no notch, 6.1" Pro model and a Qualcomm chip as the rumors suggest then I'll definitely upgrade. I dont really care about 5G regular LTE is fast enough to do anything I need to do on my device.

I agree with this statement. When I was barely making $40k I was upgrading every year. Literally every iPhone model paid cash. Now I’m in the high paying job and I just have other things I’d rather spend money on then a phone that barely changes year over year. All I know I’m waiting for the 2021. I’ve always upgraded every year and can’t believe I stayed with my xs max after the 11 pro max came out lol but we all grow up some day.

5G will be useless to me this year due to its limited outreach and extortionate contract prices, much like 4G when it launched. I’m happy to go without this technology for another few years and stick to super fast 4G and WiFi.

Out of interest, how do you know it will be extortionate? Vodafone, for example, aren't charging any more for 5G providing you are on a plan with 5GB+ data. Surely it would be commercial suicide for competitors to hike the price when VF are doing this.
