It works great for me. Sure, safari crashes occasionally, but it's because I've got a million pages open. I've also got it jb and there are no obvious slowdowns.
My ipad has plenty of life left.

I am passing my iPad1 onto hubby and the kids (who already hog it anyway ;-)) and iPad3 is going to be my birthday present. Mostly iPad1 is great but I do get a few crashes and things have slowed down. The absolute worst is the latest version of notes plus where the handwriting engine can barely cope.

I'm dreaming of a stylus and proper handwriting integration instead of 3rd party apps too but not sure if that will happen. I use my iPad a lot for studying and have all my notes and course materials on it via dropbox and good reader. A decent stylus (and the right kind of screen to make that happen) would make it truly possible to permanently pass on pen and paper.

Lol.. it will sure be lighter than the iPad 1 ... a LITTLE more heavy than the iPad 2 though :D

iPad 1 = 730 grams

iPad 2 = 600 grams

iPad 3 = only about 1-2 mm. thicker (if its what rumors say it is) - will add MAYBE 30 grams (with the bigger battery) so = 630 - still 100 grams lighter then iPad 1

i am assuming the battery and screen are going to add weight, even if they don't add bulk. i would guess it is closer to the 730. at any rate, i would not expect it to be any easier to read with one hand. i use a compact book holder (bookgem) myself, so it is a non-issue.

I bought iPad 1 and iPad 2 and plan to keep the iPad 1 over the iPad 2 which I'll sell and upgrade to the iPad 3.

The big reason is that I think resale value of the iPad 1 is probably around $200 and I'm going to give it to my 20 month old son rather than buy a portable DVD player and some educational toy like the Leappad. It's 2 years old so I don't care if he drops and breaks it. The only problem is that battery life after 2 years is usually pretty bad and drop to 2-3 hours of use but I suppose that will stop my son from using from extended periods of time.

Even if you don't pass it to your kids, I think for $200 it's be hard to find anything as fun and useful as the iPad 1. Install it in your car as a giant GPS, use it as a second display for your computer, install it permanently in your bathroom as a news ticker for the morning. Heck, I ended up paying extra for a fridge that basically has a small touchscreen and a seperate crisper drawer and afterwards I though I should have just bought an iPad and taped it to the door.

I mostly use my iPad 1 for web, email, videos, and a bit of Pages/Numbers work. It still does all of that fine, besides the occasional Safari crash. I can't see myself upgrading unless there is an absolutely remarkable new feature or ten.

I understand the want for the newest thing, but these are pricey items. I'd rather hang on to mine until I really need a new one than spend at least a couple hundred dollars a year (after selling the old one) for the latest and greatest.

getting an ipad is like getting a personal computer it really isn't necessary to upgrade every year which is actually surprising for a 1st gen product, if I had one I wouldn't upgrade yet its still good and can do just about everything the ipad 2 can do.

My guess is that the 1st gen is realistically good for another year before it might start having problems running new apps.

Anyone on a budget (95%) would be kind of foolish to shell out at least $500 a year for a new one, just my opinion though.

Thinkin of upgrading. My iPad2 had a dead pixel and Apple is sending me the new one.

So I was thinking of selling the first one, while maintaining the most value. And make an upgrade reasonable.

Still, my biggest expectation is ram. If they don't upgrade to 1 gig of RAM, I might not get it.

sold ipad 1 for roughly the same price i paid for it (bought overseas after ipad 2 cam e out and prices dropped). i sold the ipad2 for a one hundred dollar loss. that hurt.

but, my point is that you don't have to pay 500 dollars for a new one. you just have to be willing to pay about 5-10 dollars in rent per month for a device.

that's a couple of coffees. i can do that :)

My parents are keeping theirs. It's still on 4.3.3 os and they mainly use it for safari, youtube, solitaire, and the dictionary. It's still going pretty smoothly. I'm too afraid to upgrade it to ios 5.

Is it possible to go back in iOS? I think my iPad 1 ran much better under old versions.

Erm no. I bought iPad 2 on launch day. It is a vast improvement over the original in every way. If iPad 1 was so right then why did SO MANY improvements need to be made for the revision? I accept app support was slow at first but the original was clearly designed for the why-even-try-they'll-buy-it-anyway test sheep demographic. They clearly saved the true features for the 2nd and 3rd gen.

I have to disagree with you on this one. Last year the big point of discussion was whether the ipad 2 was worth it since it didn't really do anything new, just a little lighter and a little faster and had a crappy camera. Lots of discussion about how small of an upgrade the iPad 2 really was.

iFixit looked at the weight of the 'retina display' MacRumors claims to possess, and as it turns out... the retina display is actually lighter.

I'm not going to bother as sometimes you've just gotta be content with what you have.

I'm going to probably upgrade to the iPad 4 when it comes out.

nope. once you upgrade you cannot downgrade firmware. Apple has to digitally sign the firmware when you try to install it. Since they don't sign blobs for anything other than iOS 5.0.1 right now, that's the only version of iOS you can install unless you have a copy of your SHSH files saved somewhere, then you can use TinyUmbrella to get an older version of iOS on your device.

Really?!? With the brightness all the way down, I still get 9 hours easy. Not that I go through that every day. I wonder what is typical for a 2 year old iPad.

Well I sold my iPad 1 yesterday on CL for $325 and I had it since the day it came out 32Gb wifi.
So paying $175 for owning it 2 years is pretty good and cheap enough.
I really hated selling it cause I really loved it but I don't need two iPads so I had to.

Meh, right now I don't see the point of getting a new iOS tablet. I already have an iPhone and a laptop, as well as an android/WebOS tablet. I don't really see it getting much use from me.

Well I disagree with you. For me iPad 1 was slow, heavy and the apps were not there but by the time they were, we had iPad 2 which just happened to have all the hardware improvements I wanted in the original. Those little difference you mentioned were all the difference I needed.

People dont generally buy EVERY new gen iPod, macbook or iPhone so Im guessing people will be buying a new iPad once their old one junks out. This could be every 3-4yrs like a regular computer.

My feeling is that iPad 3 will be pretty special and it will be a long time before its obsolete. I can see how anyone with an iPad 1 might still be happy with it while 95% of new apps are still compatible with their device.

My iPad 1 is kind of finish! I mean it works and all but its slow as hell. 256mb just won't cut it anymore. Also 3G is too slow...

iPad 1 here... it works great for web browsing, maps, YouTube... I'll certainly go play with an iPad 3 in the store but I don't need a new one. The one I have is as good as it was when it came out. (64GB + 3G)

I have the iPad 1, I skipped the iPad 2 because it didn't have an improved screen. Providing the iPad 3 (or whatever its called) has an improved screen I will definitely be getting it.

I cannot get a meal with a decent bottle of wine for two for $500 to $600. SO if I am walking through a Bestbuy or an Apple Store I will probably buy an iPad3. These things are so cheap! I would never put my iPad1 in the bathroom or kitchen, I have one of those flat screens behind the mirror for tv in the bathroom. As well as TV in the kitchen. I also usually do not surf the net well I am on the pooper!!! But some here do I guess. The recipe thing I have someone else cook. So who cares.

I use my iPad to look at a few newspaper weather apps and the occasional email, Sometimes I surf the net or view photos... So it works fine for me!
Hell I still write with a fountain pen!!

Sold

I just sold my iPad and I'm a bit sad. I noticed that it lagged a bit with iOS 5 and I kept comparing my iphone's screen to its lower res one. I plan to buy the iPad 3/2S, 32GB + 3G (hopefully LTE). Cheers.

I'll be holding on to my iPad 1 until schools out, then I plan to give my iPad to my dad who has a crappy I touch 2g and loves the big screen on this. I paid $100 for my iPad 1 a few months ago, and I am replacing all my computers this summer, replacing my laptop for a 13 inch air, and building my own gaming rig from scratch, and possibly switching back to wp7 when the next release (Apollo) comes out.

I was about to pull the trigger on an iPad 3 per-order, but after upgrading to 5.1 my original iPad is working great. 5.0 was pretty bad. So I think I'll stick with my 1st gen for now, or until I see the retina screen in person ;)
