Best way to test this to be 100% sure is to set one of the hot corners to turn the display off. And then all you have to do is move your mouse cursor to the chosen hot corner, it will turn off display, you wake it again by moving cursor, and you do that action 5-10-15 times, if there's still pixel shift it should appear.

Btw, now that you changed your mac mini m1 unit, do you still experience screen waking up with lower brightness then you set, so you need to re-slide it again to the max?
I own mac mini m1 and LG ultrafine 5k latest revision, and these two issues are so annoying for me.
OK, I did this 15 times in a row and still no pixel shifting. (thank god)
If you are experiencing the problem you should definitely contact your reseller for a replacement.

The brightness does reset to a lower level every time I put the display to sleep. I don't really consider this a problem.

Hello,

I have the following setup: Mac Mini M1 (2020) Base Configuration, LG Ultrafine 5K (12/2020 Batch).
My issues when I set the display to sleep and wake it up again:
  • The brightness is not correct very often. The display is set brighter than it should be.
  • A pixel shift in the center of the screen occurs.

After reading this thread I have the following questions which I hope somebody can answer because I don't have the equipment at home for testing:
  • Has anyone tried the "Apple Thunderbolt 3 Pro Cable" or any other than the original LG one?
  • Does a Thunderbolt 3 Dock resolve any of the issues? Maybe the CalDigit TS3 Plus or the CalDigit Element Hub?

I would be very thankful if somebody could test this.

Hello
The Apple Thunderbolt 3 Pro does not solve the problem ! same for a thunderbolt 4 cable
no solution with another cable we must hope for an update from Big Sur

Hi Franckymrs,

I thought that it may not be the cable.....
Have you tried a Thunderbolt Dock to solve the pixel shift issue?

Hey there.

I have the CalDigit TS3 Plus and have tested it with and without the dock and found no variance.

I am currently running 11.4 Beta with the LG 5k2k and have not really experienced any issues aside from:

  1. Prolonged Wake time from sleep - Sometimes up to 30 seconds while waiting for the screen to initiate.
  2. Limited support for HiDPI resolutions - I am still seeking a resolution for recovering 3840x1620 HiDPI.
I do not think the TS3 makes a difference!

For what it's worth, the LG Ultrafine 5k was working flawlessly for 11 months with a 2018 15" MBP. The pixel shifting and brightness randomness is purely with the Mac Mini M1.
My plan was always to move to the first M1 24"+ iMac when available and sell the M1 and LG, but it'll be a shame if the next owner still has to deal with pixel shifting.
I've filed bug reports to Apple with every macOS release, but heard nothing back yet.
I believe that Marco has an M1 and LG Ultrafine 5k, so if he experiences it, I guarantee we'll hear about it on ATP. That might light a fire under some Apple dev asses :)

Guys, @tthkbw @Colonel Panik @Franckymrs how many times do I need to repeat this..?
If you're experiencing Pixel Shifting, GET A REPLACEMENT! It's not normal and it won't be fixed by software!

And definitely don't go selling the unit. You're just saddling up someone else with the same problem.
All of our M1 Macs are still WELL WITHIN Apple's 1 year warranty so there's absolutely no reason not to make use of it! You have that right. (Even if you've bought the unit second hand, you're still the rightful owner.)

The problem is not a faulty Mac Mini M1. Else there would not be this problem on non-M1-Macs. It is most probably a software issue.

I‘ve got the same problem with the LG 5k and a Mac Pro. The monitor works perfectly fine with my Macbook Pro, but in combination with the Mac Pro it has pixel shifting and wake-problems sometimes. That‘s with Catalina.

Tried out a Mac mini M1 (maxed out 16gb ram) and MacBook Pro M1 (8gb 256) for work and 27-inch LG ULtraFone (manufacture late 2020). I see the following issues:
20-30 seconds before display appears on start up or restart of either M1 Mac
Pixel shift when waking from sleep, sometimes sleeping the display and waking works
spin wheel when connecting the display the M1 MacBook Pro or unplugging it from the MacBook Pro. Haven’t tried replicating this on the mini.

I lost track of the issue since I was away from my M1 for a couple of months. Then I saw the LG app finally get updated to M1 compatibility and was excited that this was finally going to be resolved.

But alas it was not, same pixel shifting and wrong brightness-from-sleep issues.

And to address Hessel89's post, I have both replaced the M1 and the LG 5K, I have tried Apple's official TB3 cable for data and I have used both a Caldigit TB3+ and OWC TB4 Hub. None have solved it. It is clearly not a faulty unit. I hope it is software though and not something that makes the LG 5K physically incompatible.

I stopped filing reports with Apple since it was tiring and to-date, useless. Maybe I will try again...

since I removed the black Apple Thunderbolt cable I have much less problem , I have the impression that long cables aggravate the problem

I've only used the original LG TB3 cable and a standard Apple white TB3 (data) cable in one meter length. The display and the M1 are quite close.

It's pretty clear to me that the LG 5K is a nichey enough product that no one really needs to sort this out. I'm sure we are all in the very long tail of too-narrow-to-care use cases with persistent issues.

I use the LG cable for my DAS Terra Master TD2 and for the monitor that of the DAS which is very short I have no problem with coming out of standby or brightness adjustment
i don't use dynamic wallpapers

How long is the cable? What wallpaper do you use. Please post a screenshot of your settings and display resolution.
