It's bs.

We complained about our reception, they, apple, replaced the iPhones with new ones. We continued to have dropped calls and bad reception on those that didn't drop. We now have spent the $150 dollars to purchase AT&T micro cell to boost the signal in our house. We didn't need this for the 3GS. Now with the booster, we are still getting dropped calls from the garage which is one room over and down from the microcell. Lastly, we are in the 3G area for AT&T, we did not have dropped calls from anywhere in the house on the 3GS. This is Not an issue the display of strength, it's an issue with the iPhones signal reception.

Whoever believes this is out of their mind!

So I compare 2 phones... One being my iPhone 4.

When the deathgrip is not enforced.. both phones receive around the same exact signal. Usually if one is at 5 bars, the other is at 4 or 5 bars. Alternating accordingly.

So that tells me.. that the measurements are correct. I get the same service as my other phone did when the deathgrip isn't applied.

But when I apply the deathgrip.. Somehow, it causes the software to read what the actual signal is?? Yeahh right!

IF... IF... IF... The formulas are wrong.. Then how in the hell does holding the outside of the phone cause the formulas to work right?? Its causing the phone to lose service.. thats what it is doing. I have NEVER gotten 2 bars of service in my house. I always have 5 bars, 4 minimum. Apple is trying to tell me that I am actually suppose to have 2-3 bars of service??

Just fix the phone Apple. If there is any need for a software fix.. Then its the proximity sensor.. if that isn't already screwed up by hardware as well.

This doesn't mean all hardware related issues can be fixed by a software patch.

I never implied that. Just that some can be accounted for. Too many people here do not think ANY hardware issue can be mitigated by software and that's false

If it was fixed with a software patch, by definition it was a software issue.

Nope, it was a hardware issue

A quick link I have found
http://maba.wordpress.com/2006/09/07/apple-officially-acknowledges-macbook-random-shutdowns-rsd/
Apple has acknowledged the RSS as a hardware related defect, meaning that repair is covered by your warranty.

Essentially, it was when the heat sink expanded due to temperature, contacting a sensor, and shorting out the computer which caused it to shut down

They fixed it with a software fix by essentially having the system ignore the signal caused by the shorting of the wire

Don't you think that makes sense? If they find that the product is hardware defective enough for people to return the phone, they need to recall the product...anyone that is keeping an iPhone 4 that is consistently dropping calls and data is either not really having the issue, or really just wants an iPod Touch...
The iPhone is a lot of things and has many features but it is first and primarily a phone. If enough people call and report the phone isn't working or begin returning it because the phone part of the unit is faulty, Apple will have no choice but to address the hardware issue....
Apple/Steve may be evil, but the are not dumb...
I believe we will soon see just how widespread the actual call/data dropping issue (not just losing signal bars) really is...

it only makes sense to issue the recall if returns exceed certain numbers otherwise they'll probably just leave it as is

I'm pretty sure that is how most recalls work (unless there is an imposed recall by a government agency)...how would they deem that the issue is widespread enough to recall the product unless the returns(and perhaps Support calls) are enough to show them so...
They certainly cannot judge by reading user forums. Again, I trust that if the issue is widespread enough to affect the majority of users (or at least enough to cause lines outside of stores to return the phones or so many support calls as to force Apple to increase the amount of CSR's), Apple will initiate either a limited/voluntary or even perhaps a mandatory recall of the product. That is just smart business. Rushing into a recall a week after the product is released wouldn't be very smart. Now, perhaps they might've addressed the issue a bit better than having Steve simply say "hold the phone differently or get a case", but a massive full product recall with a product base as large as the iPhone's is not something you knee-jerk into after just a few days...
Again, I think most fair minded iP4 customers will give Apple a little more time to figure this out...

I'm really sad to say my iPhone 4 will be going back, I think the device is great but as a phone no :(

Apple is blatantly lying through their teeth on this one and blaming AT&T and their own incompetence to report a true signal.

I'm in the UK and I have very good coverage for my provider at my home address. If I watch a video stream on my iPhone 4 it plays perfectly over 3G.

However the second I hold the phone in my left hand my signal drops to Edge and then nothing and the stream fails. If its a poor reporting error how come the stream works fine for as long as I want it to when its not held in my left hand?

My sister has a Sony Ericsson Satio on the same network and gets full signal just like my iPhone at our address. The signal is correct the mobile telephone mast is 400 meters up the road.

This proves to me it works great until its held that way! I have tried it at different locations and it happens again and again. I haven't had many dropped calls but people have complained they cannot hear me and the line is bad, yet these are locations where my 3GS has always worked flawlessly.

Apple cannot fob me off when I can prove I can get FULL 3G speeds downloading a file and then within seconds of holding it in my left hand those speeds decrease to nothing! Its BS

after queuing up for about 12hrs in total to get this phone and it looking so sweet I was really hoping a software fix would sort me out. Instead Apple insults us with that BS letter.

iPhone 4 will be going back Monday :(

Thanks, i'll be going back to my 3GS and getting full 3G speeds whatever way its held at my current location. Dont fancy android the 3GS was my first iPhone and im fully converted but the iPhone 4 just dont work for me at least :(

No YOU are insulting our intelligence.

RETURN THE ****ing phone you damned whiners!

Seriously, go return the phone! And leave the rest of a super majority of us who don't have the issue alone. Obviously there isn't enough reception in your area regardless of how you hold the phone.

RETURN THE PHONE and stop insulting our intelligence by insisting Apple's wrong but keeping the phone anyway!

Put your freakin' money where you mouth is!

Why do u care if they whine? how is their whining affecting u? does their whining make ur phone work any less? why do u even care if they complain to some super rich corporation to fix a flawed device? how the hell does that affect U????

furthermore, these whiners u r complaining about got apple to fix a "bug" which has been around for 2 years. now everyone will get a realistic idea of signal strength... thanks to these whiners... or do u think true bar representation is a bad thing?

Maybe this will be fixed and in the near future you can again try a iP4! I hope that is the case..
Cheers

Im pretty sure a recall isnt issued after "x" return rate, since a recall is essentialy the equivalent of 100% return rate. recalls are issued to avoid lawsuits that can cause serious damage to a company's reputation and financially.

where did you get that stat?..what are you basing that on?

Apple is #73 on the Fortune 500

From the press:

“As of Wednesday, Wall Street valued Apple at $222.12 billion and Microsoft at $219.18 billion. The only American company valued higher is Exxon Mobil, with a market capitalization of $278.64 billion.“
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/27/technology/27apple.html

“By 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading, Apple’s market value was at $222.1 billion, higher than Microsoft’s $219.2 billion. That made Apple the most valuable technology firm in the world. It’s also the second-largest U.S. stock by market value, behind oil company Exxon Mobil Corp., valued at $278.6 billion on the New York Stock Exchange.“
