Hey guys,

Yesterday I received my new 12pro with apple silicone case.
(had an iphone 6 prior to that...)

I’m experiencing some difficulty:

1. the overall size of it is larger than the iphone 6 especially with the silicone case. I have small hands, and I’ve noticed that it is hard for me to type with one hand now. Which bothers me.
2. The increased weight also is noticeable for me (and my wrist).

My question:
Since I’ve noticed that without the case, it is much easier for me to type with one hand and the weight is oddly much less of an issue.

i’m wondering if it’s a bad idea to just not use a case? Without it i feel much more comfortable (and natural) to use the phone. The other option is to replace to an iphone 12 mini.

What would you do?
Thx

Is it a bad idea? Yes. Should you do it anyways? Maybe!

My two solutions to this issue are an always on ultra-minimal case, or a regular case I put on if I leave and take off when I’m at the house. Stays right with my keys and wallet and only takes a sec. It’s a nice way to enjoy the phone itself while keeping it safe when out and about

Caseless is the way to go. You’ve got the steel. It will not deform when you drop it vs the aluminum. Go for it. AppleCare or equivalent insurance if you want peace of mind.
I got the silicone case with the 12Pro as well, do not like the weight increase or the closed bottom. Caseless and my phone is decent. The sides are scratched up but that’s because I don’t baby it. Phone looks too good to put in a case.

Is going case-less a bad idea?

If you're going to drop it and/or keep it in your pocket with keys and sharp objects, yes.

If you're not, then no.

Not really, I do all of that and it’s still stellar

Not all, but many of those who do not use cases tend to have spatial awareness of where their phones are. They set them down in appropriate places, putting things under them if they need to. They unconsciously cradle their phone with two hands in situations where it can be knocked about by external forces - or they know enough to put it away before that happens.

Not all, but many of those who DO use cases tend to treat the case as an insurance policy. The phone gets tossed around, they aren't careful with it, lose track of where it is, etc - because the case is 'always' going to protect them from their lack of attention. Some of them justify using a case because they are 'clumsy'. It's easier than actually forcing themselves to pay attention to a ~$1000 phone. Others just don't care, that's what Applecare+ is for.

Some, but not all, fall in a middle ground. There are some jobs where not using a case would be a really f*ing stupid idea. There are some times where using a case is outright paranoia.

Whether it's a good idea or not just depends on how you view things and on how much attention you're willing to give to your phone. I have used iPhones caseless for years and to date have cracked only one screen. My iPhone 6s+ is still going strong, never had a case, screen and casing are both fine. And that's a five year old phone.

I’m very careful with my phones yet nevertheless my X has hit the concrete pavement twice and was unscathed both times due to the case it’s in. I’d prefer not to use one, but it’s the best idea for most people I think.

I'm also in the case-free camp. As someone else mentioned, the phone just looks and feels too good to cover up, especially the white Mini. I got myself a Spigen Neo Hybrid because I remember really liking it the last time I used it (lots of years back) but it only lasted a few days as the cutouts on the bottom of the case were digging into the cuticle of my pinky finger. Not comfortable in the slightest.

@eyoungren hit the nail on the head with the spatial awareness bit. In more recent years, I've always ended up using my phones caseless and the one time I smashed a screen it was when I had a case and a glass screen protector. I think that was a 6S; can't quite recall anymore.

I'm also very anti-Apple Care. I think insurance in general is a huge rip-off but health and vehicle insurance are at least worth it if something ends up happening. Had I gone through the years purchasing Apple Care for every phone, the amount of money I would have thrown away would be staggering. I'd rather pay the cost of replacement if I do happen to break something.

It's your phone, and none of us know how well you'll treat it, or how prone to accidents you are, or if things like minor scratches or bumps will bother you. I don't see what value our opinions have.

I find in that with most questions like this people already know what they want to do, and they're just looking for some kind of permission or validation to do it.

I've dropped my phone more than once, despite being caseless. There is only one time from 2009 to now that anything serious has happened. I'm not you and you aren't me of course, so we both have different outlooks. A case works for you, I take my chances. But I'm not careless.

That said, my current phone is a Pixel 3a XL and I've found myself treating it the same as I would any other tool. It has a few nicks and scratches now (I still do not use cases). It's interesting to me though, that since I care less about this phone then the older iPhones I own, I haven't dropped it on anything other than carpet yet. The last tumble my iPhone 6s+ took was on concrete.

No idea what that says about things.

Or people come for the conversation and to listen to others' personal experiences to aid in their decision making. Posts like yours are really kinda useless fluff in the context of this thread.

and or go caseless with AppleCare+. If something happens it’s super cheap to get fixed. :)
This is what I would recommend. I have gone caseless with all my iPhone's and always get AC+ in case I do drop it. I unfortunately dropped my 12 three weeks after owning it. Luckily with AC+, I was able to get an express replacement since the phone was unusable after it was dropped.

I personally don’t see the point in going caseless myself. I don’t think these phones feel particularly nice to hold without a case and a drop is often an extremely expensive mistake, even with an overpriced insurance policy like AppleCare.

For the Mini AppleCare+ is only $149. An apple leather case is $60 and silicon case is $50 (I usually by both) plus I typically buy a bunch of other cases through the years, so $149 AC+ and naked actually saves me $$ in the long run. At least that’s the theory. We’ll see. :)

Going caseless is a bad idea if you are accident prone, in an environment where the phone could easily get damaged, or so anal retentive that the smallest scratch will lead to endlessly blaming Apple.

This is my launch day 12 Pro.

Is it a far better experience without a case? Yes, 100%. Is it worth risking a £1k phone by not using one? Absolutely not.
I mix it up and often use it case less when at home (which is a lot these days) and care when out.

I regret not using my 11 pro caseless more often. It was much more comfortable than the 12 pro and the curved glass was a beauty. Having tried out both ways I’ll stick to caseless.

If you drop it and it gets blemishes or cracks, without considering the worst case scenarios, would you hyper-fixate on the damages, big or small, or would it roll off your shoulder? If it’s the former, adjust to using it in a case.

This was me to a "T"....I never used a case, so when i went from a Ip7 to a IP12Pro the size difference caused me to drop it on tile from "chest high".

dinged up the SS side a bit and freaked the F out!!!

$100 Apple care incident and round #2 with a new phone...yeah, I use a case now :)
