You spend $20K+ on a car and drive it everywhere you need to regardless of normal weather conditions, not to mention road debris and other accidentals from you as the owne,r and others you know and some you don’t. And with all that, you don’t attempt to drive your car wrapped in bubble wrap as it if were supposed to be a four-wheeled condom.

And here we are talking about a disposable device that typically cost less than $1k for most people, and many can’t fathom not treating their phone as if it were priceless and supposed to be wrapped in a specially made phone condom.
Not a fair comparison. Cars are designed to be exposed to the outside elements. Phones theses days, not so much.

I went caseless and noticed a bunch of micro-scratches and color deformity on the stainless steel (which apple replaced out of warranty for free :))

The analogy wasn’t meant to be 100%. I was mainly addressing the flawed reasoning.

Many, many people (and I was one for a long time) have bought into the marketing strategy as well as the forum bee hive mentality that an iPhone has to have a case.

Too many people (especially on this forum) treat their phone as if it were an investment, instead of a depreciating disposable / recycled product.

It kind of is, if you keep it in good condition you can typically get “decent“ money back out of it when you plan on selling/trading it in. (Like say the ATT $800) trade in offer.

i’m guessing they wouldn’t take a dinged up/scratched up phone (or maybe they do?)

They do. People buy used phones for trade in

They do, but you get more for a device in good condition - at least, I always have.

Folks, there is no correct or right answer to this. The only important solution is the one you choose. Put you iPhone in a case, don’t put you iPhone in a case. Hands up who doesn’t care whether someone else uses a case or not?

I don’t like the feel or look of these iPhones without a case on but that’s my take. If someone else chooses not to use one and likes to post pictures of their immaculate phone on the internet to prove so, great, I don’t really care. It’s that black and white yet people still find a way to argue over it!

I typically use the apple leather cases and bought two for my iphone 12 mini (I was really looking forward to the patina on the Baltic Blue). However, as of today they are both sitting in their boxes and I have been going caseless at least 95% of the time. The mini feels really secure in-hand for me and it’s proven to be quite durable so far. It has not been babied and it once dropped off a nightstand onto a hard floor, and it’s still pristine with no scratches, dings, or chips (I have the green for what it’s worth).

At this point I may return one or both of the leather cases and just keep a cheap case around for when I absolutely need it (hiking, runs, etc). Just my 2c from someone who has always used cases in the past.

But, for me, the function of the case is to keep the iPhone scratch and blemish free so that when I go to sell the iPhone and hopefully afford a new one, I always get top dollar.
This is something I've always wondered about since we (my wife and I) don't sell our phones on, we keep them. It seems to me that there is a segment of Apple's customers that have no interest in the aesthetics of the phone because it's always going to go into a case. Apple could save itself a lot of money by not investing in the actual look of the phone, just the function (function over form).

That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it occurs to me that such a device that is later sold on might not fetch top dollar because the buyer IS interested in aesthetics. Unless the new buyer puts it in a case too.

I've often wondered too, if Apple sold a device where the 'case' was part of the design, if that would sell to this customer segment. A case, say an Otter Box for instance, that is integrally designed into the form of the iPhone - would that sell? Apple eliminates the need for a case entirely.

I don't know, it's all speculation. I've just always found it odd that for this customer segment the only time they ever see their phone without the case is when they buy it, sell it or clean it.

I remember driving my brand new Golf R out of the showroom and one the way home got hit by a large stone - I was gutted but once it happens, it’s meh.

I prefer to go without a case for my iPhones and I’m conscious of where I place it and extra careful not to drop it. Of course I’ve dropped it from time to time and that’s where Apple care comes in.

I upgrade annually so only ever pay for a years Apple care which is the cost of two cases really. I’ve never had a glass claim, but utilised their express replacement because of other warranty issues which results in a refurbished device anyway. If they discover water (or other damage) then they can’t charge me an out of warranty fee, just the Apple care deductible - but this has never happened so far.

So, caseless and 12 months worth of Apple care for me. Also, if you save up any cosmetic issues and do a replacement before you sell, then you maximise the value and end up with a perfect battery which then covers the money spent on Apple care.

I will always have a case.

What gets is me is these folks who would spend $1000+ on their phone and still say it is only a "tool" and it is meant to get beat up (hence, they never use a case) and they don't care how it looks. Well you go ahead have a crappy/ghetto (looking) phone then...it's your money!😁

This iPhone 6s+ is over five years old and has never been in a case. I don't use cases, I don't care for them. But I DO care for my phone. I used it as my primary phone until May of 2020.

I defy you to tell me it looks like a crappy/ghetto phone.

Not you per se because you obviously "care" about your phone. I'm talking about the ones who don't care and have busted screens and scratches because they don't give a crap.

Gotcha. Although I once dealt with my aforementioned cracked screen for about a month until I could afford to replace it. I had a screen protector on, which was an oxymoron in terms because the screen protector did nothing to protect the screen. The screen cracked BEHIND the protector.

Although it did protect my fingers for that month or so from the cracked glass. :)

Funnily enough most busted screen iPhones I’ve seen are in a case. Scratched up steel isn’t ghetto.

Also fun fact, all scratches are covered up with smudges on the 12 pro.
it does not stay clean. Lmao.

I added a $5k matte PPF wrap to my car, but prefer ceaseless on the phone :p

Cases are a compromise.
There is no value addition they bring to the table as long you live in a country with apple care and express replacement.
Apart from my last 11Pro all phones I’ve owned have received at least a single replacement or screen change. All done from the manufacturer. Without insurance so the repair never took longer than a few hours.

A replacement phone gives me a new battery, glass , no dust In ports, new speakers and mic etc etc it feels fresh.

there’s too much talk about oh how I can’t imagine using a scratched up phone or blah blah. Well I can’t stand using it with a case, no matter how good. And y’all love “patina” on leather (majorly grime that is) but cry like a wuss over scratches on steel or glass.

whatever parts a case will protect from scratches...... are already covered up. And if you put on a case and protector as soon as you get your phone...... then who even cares what’s under the case.

what some people fail to understand is my phone will be replaced at the 6 month mark and then probably again at the 1 year mark before I hand it down and get Next years model.
It has a 1 year life for me, and I’ll be getting 2x new devices in that timeframe if the situation deems fit.
Way better than using the same old phone for eternity 🙃

if I could get a new car twice a year for $100 that’d be a steal

Summed it up perfectly. I use express replacements in the same way. It’s really nice to get a fresh phone mid-cycle and again ready for the buyer - covers the cost of the 1 years worth of AC.

I keep my 12 Mini in the box it came in from Apple. By omitting the charger and earphones they made the box a lot more compact than previous models and I find it fits in my jacket pocket ok, just a bit bulky.
I take the phone out of the box to charge it and to make the occasional call or send a text. I have a fine microfibre cloth which I keep wrapped around the phone and fold back when I need to look at the screen, it’s just a matter of moments to wipe the screen clean and put it back in the box each time I use it.
I’m puzzled as to why more people don’t take advantage of the perfectly good protection that Apple included with the phone.
