I got lucky to have my internship pay for my contract, which is quite sweet to say the least. But it forces me to be working on my iPhone in class sometimes, which can be distracting.

I was especially guilty of this in one of my entrepreneurship classes last semester... Good thing my prof had an iPhone herself, so she let it fly.

Taken in class from my iPhone:cool:

Don't worry, you don't need to pay attention in those classes anyway.

(formerly seeking minor in entrepreneurship)

My friend is going to school to become a doctor, and she's required to have an iPhone because they use a specialized app. Not sure what school it is though.

many med schools require them.
Some nursiing schools are introducing them so they are on the same page as the doctrs

It's really not a must have at my uni. (my uni's small and focussed on engineering, science, languages and business so no courses that are going to require an iPhone)

A few people have one, I generally see a couple a week when I'm on campus, but it's by no means a must have. I know a few people with iPhones, few with blackberries but the vast majority still have "normal" phones.

When I go onto campus at Edinburgh uni the number of people with blackberries jumps right up. I can guarantee I'll see at least 5 just walking through the library. Then again, there's more rich kids at Edinburgh uni.

I don't think they're a must-have but they are very useful. I don't know anyone with an iPhone or any other smartphone at my uni, though. Most people just have "normal" phones.

I couldn't live without mine, now that I'm used to it, but I do have an extremely active life and a hectic schedule. I have classes, I do all sorts of promotion jobs part time and I'm constantly going on interviews and trainings for them, I have dance classes and extra curricular courses...

But I do pay for it myself though, I would never ask my parents to pay for it since it is a luxury, even though they offered. I worked last summer to buy it full price and have a very cheap plan, it's basically the plan I had before the iPhone which was 10€ plus 10€ for data.

I guess it all depends, I'm just as fast on my iPhone's virtual keyboard as I am on QWERTY phones. What's MCPHS?

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. My brother got his PharmD here and it's one of the more popular schools (but not highly ranked).

This thread title is misleading. The OP meant whether or not the iPhone is the "in" thing to have. Of course iPhones are not "must-have" items on campus. The iPhone and the plan that goes along with it is out of the budget for most college students.

I go to UCLA where there are lot of rich kids and iPhones are seriously EVERYWHERE. In a class of about 20 people at least 5-6 have an iPhone. Among 5 of the co-coordinators for my research program, 3 of us have iPhones.

But now with $99 3Gs, expect to see more on campuses.

Did you say...UCLA?

You might be able to guess where I go. :p

Thanks for knowing what MCPHS is, and I'm starting here in the fall.

I think the iPhone isn't the "IN" thing at any college. I'm pretty sure you can spot out the "cool" people by the type of laptop they have. For example, a student with a macbook is more appealing to look at than a Dell (no offense to Dell people, but I'm just pointing out the aesthetics of them both).

As a college student, iPhones are cool, but the MacBook sets you apart.

Oh, and I still think my E71 looks very good, aesthetically, for a QWERTY phone.

I have a macbook pro

I really do think that a laptop really sets you apart. I feel as if though if you don't have a laptop in college, you'll be feeling awkward.

My brother goes to Ohio state. I don't he considers it a must have only because he got his junior year of highschool.

I really don't think you need one but I love mine and it does really help when your not near a computer.

It also helps when your near a computer: Tethering FTW.

Having 7 iPhones sets you apart you can get so many chicks who want to play with your

IPhone :D

I'm getting a 3GS when my upgrade is ready in september. Just prefect when school begins!

Sets you apart from what?

I remember interviewing a slew of potential engineers.
A few of them had Apple this and Apple that their resumes. As part of the interview a demonstration on their basic skills of Excel and Power Point was required. let em tell you, their usage MBPs truly set them apart.
If you need a computer to set up apart from others then I guess tha is what owning a mac is all about

A lot of my friends have them. I used to be the only one (in my circle of friends) that had the first-gen iPhone. They thought I was really rich, lol. But the 3G, most of them have it.

Most people around our campus either have an iPhone or Touch.
