ELIMINATION vs. LAPTOP HUNTERS

that seems like a "response" to me....

It does seem like a response but listen to the main point. Apple is trying to distance itself away from the PC world to make the Mac brand even stronger and extremely exclusive.

When you hear the word Mac, what does that tell you? Success, Apple, iPhone, iPod and Mac computers.

When you hear the word PC, what does it tell you? Generic, viruses, malwares, crashes, BSOD, crappy, Windows.

They are not marketing Leopard, iPhone or anything, just the word "Mac". What exactly is MS advertising? I can't never figure out the point of MS latest Ad? MS has nothing to do with those laptops other than it runs Windows but those laptops can run Linux just as well. So the only thing MS is trying to do is to keep the fact that Macs are expensive as hell, that's all. Nothing else is a problem with the Mac, just the cost.

Which is funny considering MS still holds more than 90% of the market share, why the need to RESPOND to Apple Ads?

No matter what the "true purpose" of the ad was it came just a short time after the laptop hunters and had obvious similarities so I'm pretty sure it was a response, but obviously they are still going to try and market there OS

With the release of iTunes 8.2, it really might make its debut at WWDC

I think that the developer betas that we developers are getting may not necessarily be the only betas going around. I think the developer beta is out there just for devs to test their apps on. There could also be internal betas going around at Apple for testing the OS as a whole. If that is true, then there could be greater progress on 3.0 than we know as developers.

Just something I'm throwing out there.

Someone made a great point about features leaking out hence the lack of new dev betas. WWDC is going to see the presentation of all the 3.0 features. I would think in order for that to be fulfilled, new hardware in the next iphone would have to be mentioned as well. I see no reason why not to release 3.0 to devs at least after the conference.

The only reason I can see for not releasing a final to devs then would be that it's still buggy and code re-writes are still being done.

I think this is a guarantee. After the snafu with the MobileMe/3G Launch/2.0 Release last year, Apple may be considering a different release schedule this year. Perhaps 3.0 is released before the new iPhone.

Marketing and responding to a competitor isn't the same thing in this case. The "I'm a Mac" ads are just ads. It's not directed against anybody, it's trying to distance itself from the PC world that's constantly fiddled with issues, they are trying to make the Mac brand even more stronger and not associate it with PC. That's the smart marketing. People do not respond well to competitors dissing and talking crap about another competitor, that's why Apple don't do it. Apple will talk about iPhone at WWDC, share more information, do some "One more Thing", but they aren't going to respond to Palm directly. They're going to completely ignore it.

Look at what happened with Google's Wave and MS Bing. MS was announcing Bing and spreading the hype at same time with Google's Wave. Nobody heard of Bing, it was Waves all around the world.

That's what Apple is going to do.
Wait, what! Don't get me wrong, I hate the PC, but you are saying that the I'm a Mac commercials are not aimed at attacking the PC??!!! Very confused then, cause I sure thought that they were. :apple::confused:

PS. Above post by txrOckabilly gives a prime example.

I totally agree with this. I find it odd that Apple would be sending out an iTunes compatibility upgrade for 3.0 if there was a lot more work to be done to the 3.0 software.

Last year with the introduction of the SDK and 2.0 with the App Store was probably a huge project for Apple to take on. They had to overhaul the system to make use of third party app installs and code signing and all that crap. I'm thinking that 3.0 may be ready earlier this year because they already have the base system running pretty smooth and they're just basically adding on features or enabling features. Maybe the 2.x-3.0 transition is turning out to be easier than 1.x-2.x. Anyone with me?

Does it Matter?

Version 3 6 12 does it matter? its only a silly phone, do people who own Nokia N96 etc get worked up about updates etc? no of cause they do not, because anything Apple bring out Nokia and samsung etc bring something out even better, cheaper and cooler.

3.0 by June 29. New iPhone ships with 3.01 + new apps

My prediction is that the 3.0 upgrade for first generation and 3G iphones., featuring push notification etc. will be available for download before the 29th of June 2009.

Bug fixes for 3.0 will follow.

The new iPhones will ship a bit later with a slightly newer version of the OS featuring video capture additional Apps.

Don't want to be to person who is always sticking up for the iphone but apart from the camera and oled screan samsung latest efforts aren't that great... Supposedly iphone will have oled (wouldn't surprise me) and having a 1 trillion pixel camera in the size of a pin head might get some people worked up but considering i have never ever owned a phone that comes close to even an old digicam I'm not going to hold my breath about image quality...

And Nokia plan sucks it took them 1.5 years to come out with a touch screen mobile who's only redeeming quality was the fact that it had a music download service but you still need a stylus and same goes for that bulky and heavy n97... Apples main advantage is they got to start with a fresh slate, granted there have been niggles like MMS, but at the end of the day they don't have the legacy rubish software like Symbian!!!!!!

I love all the wild theories as to what's driving this release. None of us have any idea what's motivating Apple right now. We can guess, but it's really just wild speculation, and various factors/hints point in different directions (e.g.: they released itunes 8.2 BUT the beta is still too buggy. or, they want to steal the Pre's thunder BUT they want to release 3.0 with the new hardware).

Personally, I'm excited for it, but I've waited patiently since March and whenever it gets here, it gets here. :)

Maybe he just didn't notice the nerdy looking guy in the tie? This add is directly attacking competition, Windoz.

Perhaps Apple doesn't produce products in response to the competition, but they do market against the competition, directly and indirectly. For this reason, we should expect a little bit more than hand waving and a good speech at the WWDC. We already sat through a 3.0 keynote, why would they do another? It's going to be released.

I am guessing with push being wrapped up and the rumors leaking like crazy, they will release the phone and 3.0 on Monday June 15. Jobs or Schiller will say, "availible next monday along with the new iPhone 3G".

I think its a bit unreasonable to expect the new iPhone the following Monday considering there have been 0 shipping rumors, and we are only just getting the short on stock news.

There are a lot of dreamers in this thread. I don't think we'll see anything in June other than an announcement. July 17, the long-rumored date for both hardware and OS, sounds very reasonable to me. OS 3.0 Beta 5 is far from fully baked. iTunes 8.2 release now makes sense considering that betas of 3.0 are circulating. Doesn't necessarily mean the final release to everyone is imminent. Heck, we got that AT&T carrier update months ago for the Microcell thing, and that's nowhere in sight.

And regarding the Pre, let's be realistic here. The Pre is pretty huge, and Apple certainly takes them seriously, but a one-month lag on Apple's part is really no big deal. Why? Because the Pre is brand new and will have issues. It does not have an app store. It's on a different carrier (a lousy one at that). Apple has a huge installed base of iPhone users and a ton of brand recognition. Palm is the one that has to get a jump just to start grabbing a sliver of Apple's market share. Apple can afford to take a little extra time to refine the product. Believe me.

More evidence pointing to a WWDC release (or close to): http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/06/02/pre-wwdc-2009-beejive-30-to-launch-by-next-week/

Basically saying that push-enabled Beejive launching next week. If true, I apologize to the posters that previously mentioned they have 3.0-approved apps with release dates set. I'm just very perturbed that 3.0 submittal wasn't open to all developers considering some of us have applications that rely on push and are almost worthless without it (or have had to implement our own work-arounds).

But, why "announce" 3.0 when they already "announced" it?

As for a month-long lag between the Pre and the new iPhone, a month is like an eternity in the cellphone world. Joe Schmoe average customer will not have the patience. In fact, only a hardened fanboy will be able to wait it out. There's even people on here buying 3Gs when they know a new iPhone will be coming out in at most a month.

That's just speculation. Unless Apple has been testing 3.0 heavily behind the scenes, it's not coming out next week. Beta 5 was pretty bad, and Apple have never made any software update available right after a conference, except the Safari Beta in 2002.

Seeing that they released iTunes 8.2 prior to WWDC and saying that it supports iPhone 3.0 OS, it is very possible that they will release the 3.0 at or not too long after WWDC.... That's what I'm hoping for anyways

I have found Beta 5 to be rather stable.
