I think the pre will give apple a good run for their money... I know the storm was a flop for verizon but the pre seems to be a lot different.. I think they will sell a good amount... My g/f has sprint and she said when her contract is up in 2 months she will get that instead of an iphone... I should kick her out for saying that but I would love to get my hands on the pre and give it a try...

This is correct.

I doubt so. Why would Apple release iTunes 8.2 update when it can release it at a later time. It jolly well means that the firmware will be ready for download on 8th June and Apple don't want you to download both iTunes + 3.0 Firmware update all on that day - it will overload on the server.

Any new features announced during the WWDC can be made available in a later firmware update - eg. 3.1

Also if the new iPhone will come with 3.0 they should have it ready so they can start producing them, don't they need some time to flash the rumored new iPhones to 3.0 or is it a fast process?

Apple is not in a week-by-week race with the Pre. I really don't think they care if a fractional percentage of iPhone owners dump their iPhones for a Pre during the month of June just because those customers can't wait 5 friggin weeks for OS 3.0, which WILL be announced on Monday and heavily publicized so everyone on Planet Earth will know what's coming.

Apple will not rush 3.0 out the door if it is not ready or the developers and major apps aren't ready. They already got burned last year rushing MobileMe. Now maybe I'm wrong and 3.0 is more ready than it seems, but unless it is truly ready, expect to see it weeks not days.

I expect to see 3.0 sometime near the release date of the next iphone. But not 1 day prior as we saw what happened last year with servers crashing.

Apple has rushed to release update's in the past... That has bit them in the ass before... I think they will try to get this update out ASAP as to try to kill some of the pre excitement... If they don't do anything except announce the release date of the new iphone that news will fade away quickly with the pre launch... Everyone will be talking about the pre then will talk about the iphone for a minute then right back talking about the pre... So I think apple better start running rather than walking....

That's what I was trying to say before TheSpaz cut me down in a hail of machine gun fire...:D

I was under the impression that people trying to update the firmware was one of the reasons for the servers going down on iDay2.

Please explain to me how everyone will start talking about the Pre. Apple does their own thing no matter what. They don't rush products out to compete with other companies... they know that people will try the Pre out and realize the iPhone is still better. I think Apple will have a lot of people holding out on buying the Pre after Apple announces the new iPhone (with all kinds of crazy cool features). So far, we know what the Pre can do, but we don't know what the iPhone can do. If people were smart, they'd wait until they know what the NEXT iPhone can do before they buy the Pre.

This is not going to happen. The Pre has many things going against it at launch. First launching on Sprint a last place network. Second Verizon & AT&T announced they will carry the pre in 6 months so people aren't going to jump ship to get it. Third iPhone 3 announcement on Monday.

The majority of the people getting the Pre will be current Sprint customers who aren't leaving Sprint and don't want an iPhone. That is not a lot of people where Apple/AT&T need to accelerate any of their plans with the release of iPhone OS 3.0 or the new iPhone.

Well I've only heard things about the pre in the last 3 weeks.. I haven't heard 1 thing about the new iphone or update besides on this site...

What I mean is... I don't think people are going to run out to buy the Pre until they know what Apple has in store for the next iPhone. If there are really good features in the next iPhone, people may hold off and wait for it.

3.0 will be released Monday because the new features, video recording...compass...auto focus will all require new hardware which won't be available until July.

So why would you need another beta when all of the features not needing new hardware have already been tested a hand full of times??

My prediction for Monday are as follows

New 16gb and 32gb storage sizes
Black and White only
Matte back with very few other cosmetic differences
New Camera with video recording, auto focus. As well as a Compass
Applications using these new features will be showcased
Upgrades to processor and ram will match it with the Pre
3.0 will be released on Monday, new hardware will be out in July.

And that's it. MAYBE an iChat camera in the front but I still find that highly unlikely. That will probably be the selling point for next year's model.

Why the hell would Apple do that? Here is 3.0, but in 3.1, we're adding iChat, video, and other things! I don't know why they released 8.2, but it doesn't mean we're seeing 3.0 Tuesday. It would make no sense for them to release it then. The only reason the servers were overloaded last time was because of Mobile Me, not 2.0, and it was AT&T's activation servers as well, which had nothing to do with Apple.
