I went through the same thing... probably tried a total of 100 times between eligibility, adding to cart and checking out. Checkout hung on 'processing' 5 or 6 times before finally going through. I got a confirmation number, but no email yet. Seems like many are waiting several hours before confirmation email goes through.
Either way, I'm done for the night. It'll either happen or it wont!
KEEP AT IT. had been trying since this morning, off and on, and finally just went through. even had to go to at&t change my billing address to get it shipped where I am now.
I was just on Apples site and I got all the way to the delivery page pretty easy. My husband doesn't have an upgrade so I wanted to see if I was able to order him a phone but he doesn't want to spend 399. so I stopped but it was moving pretty quickly. Also it did say no longer reserving it's first come first serve that day, but you can get it delivered to your house still and still says 24th for delivery!
Idk AT&T said I had an $18 fee.
But does anyone know how long it takes to get an order confirmation?
I started at 4am while getting ready for work so off and on for an hour. Total about a dozen times. The farthest I got was picking a data plan then Apple **** the bed. Tried both safari and explorer.
I tried several different computers at work .. nada I tried my 2G on Edge and wifi nothing. I called my wife at home to walk her through it on the home computer again, nope.

AHHH so I get home and finally I get one for my number then one for my wifes number .. Go to check out and I have too many phones. I told to remove one. Well which one? There is no number next to the phone only a serial number. Is the phone on top my number? or is it the one on the bottom?????? UGH so I had to remove both of them from my basket

Hang in there. I think maybe because everyone is watching the game, but I was finally able to get through on the apple site. I had to try about 25 times, and I'd get really close, and then something would happen (once it eliminated everything in my cart). Then it added stuff I don't ever remember adding (a macbook). I deleted the macbook but what was really weird is it added a blue bumper which I wanted but never added.
Anyway, it finally went through during the half time break. I'm waiting for my confirmation.
BTW, I did use google chrome.

Finally got through after trying off & on all day. I could get all the way to process order and then get the oops screen or it wouldn't let me log in. In my anger/disappointment/haste, i processed the order again only to see Thank You! So happy, but the ship date is July 2nd and delivers: Jul 6 - Jul 8. That totally blows. I lost my 3gs last month, so I've had to wake the turtles inside the original iphone. I can wait a few extra days, but had I noticed the date change, I would have opted to pick up in store. 
After trying all day on both Att.com & apple.com..I finally got through on ATT.com but it was charging me the $18 upgrade fee. So I tried apple.com one more time and I got through just fine, no upgrade fee . Waiting for confirmation email now...keeping fingers crossed.

I got this too when ordering a 32GB just now. Ships Jul 2. I'll be keeping my in-store reservation.
It kept saying that last year but all the phones shipped/arrived on time. It will update as we get closer to release and UPS will deliver your phone on time
Yes, it's a waste of time. The earliest you can get one is by July 2nd.

i've tried it both ways and have not had success either way. at least 70 times now.
I have been trying all day and getting close. Got as far as entering payment and pressed the "place order button" and got an error. Tried that every 5 minutes and then tried on my iPad and it worked!!!!!
ha! It added an iPad & iPad cover in my cart. I was like...yes i want it but not right now. lol!
