So I've never bought anything from the Apple store. When I go in to buy my computer (with my student discount) and then get an ipod, will I just be handed an ipod before I go on my merry way, or will I have to pay for the ipod and wait forever for a rebate to arrive in the mail?

Rebate Yes. Normal rebate, no. Apple doesn't use one of those slow fulfillment companies; they do it in-house. You file electronically, and if you do it in store they'll almost do it for you. You'll wait a maximum of two weeks for the check. In Apple's policy, it claims a maximum of 30 days, but that's just to cover themselves. In reality, much faster.

Can you get the promotion ordering online from apple.com? Is this an in-store only promotion?

And are they more inclined to verify students who purchase online, than via the store? Because in the store, they ask to see a student ID, whereas online, you can just type in your school.

It's online and in-store (when it's running, I mean).

Excellent. When it's done online, how is the rebate process? All handled via online as well? Would we have to physically mail anything in (that's usually how rebates are done with online purchases, in my experience)?

besides checking every now and then and asking you to send proof of enrollment/schedule

I have been checked twice

No, it is not for everyone.

It is the Back to School promo....

If you are a student OR teacher in college or high school you are eligible. I know because I bought my current iMac (G4) back in 2003...in fact it turns eight years old the first week of May. Last summer, both of my children (college students) got in on the promotion. I have been waiting months for it to come around this time. My question is if I buy it in May/June and Lion comes out a month or so later can I get a discounted upgrade? Anyone know? Here is the site to the education discount:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/education_routing

Quick question on this, will it be available in the UK or is it a US-only promo? And I don't suppose they'll start the promo in line with the release of the next iMac will they?!

This is UK as well (well, has been before). It now tends to start the same time as in the US (previusly it started later).

Remember UK students who buy online (not in store) get a 3 year warranty as standard, see https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1103022/

Perfect. I get 6,000$ on may 31st from my suspended paypal account. And i am in the market for a mbp. Yay!

How do we know when the promotion is in effect? Is it advertised?

It will be advertised on the website and in stores. Additionally, I'm sure a thread will be started about it.

I'm debating whether or not to wait for the iPod rebate. I'm not in need of one, I'd sell it on Craiglist. With the flood of new iPods into the market after the discount is in effect, any suspicions as to what they will be selling for?

How about buying any 27" iMac and get basic 16 Gb iPad 2 for $100 ??!! That should be an awesome deal, doesn't it :D

Does anyone know what type of ipod comes with this promo? I assume the 8GB touch but can you swap that for a Classic which roughly costs the same?

Believe it's a rebate scheme, you choose whatever iPod you want and they refund a fixed amount back - therefore get the cheapest iPod and most likely will be free after rebate - get the most expensive touch and you're rebate acts a a nice discount.

Do highschool teachers qualify for the discount? I would like to get one for my husband (a teacher) - our pc makes his blood pressure go up every time he tries to work from home on it.

This discount is usually just for students in higher education, but there really is no way that Apple verifies that your a student.

You sure about that?

Apple says ......

Do you qualify for Education Pricing?

Apple offers special education pricing on Apple computers, software and select third party products to College Students, or Teachers, Administrators and Staff of all grade levels.

Don't suppose anyone's heard anymore info on this have they? Waiting to buy my iMac is becoming difficult... lol!

There's been some news/rumours about this on MacRumours and Appleinsider only in the last 24 hours. My guess has always been next week and I'll call May 24th as the launch of the promotion. I'm also waiting but the prospect of an iPod Touch definitely makes the wait worthwhile.

At least it's not too far away then (if your guess is correct!). I'll buy it as a graduation present to myself!

The thing is, I'm only waiting until the free iPod so that I can sell it on ebay to get a bit of money back! As much as I want an iPod Nano, I'd rather get an iPod Touch and sell it on ebay to try and minimise the impact it all has on my wallet! lol!

I talked to my local Apple store, and they said that if the promotion comes out within 2 weeks of the purchase date we can still get the promotion. When I asked about BTO and ordering it they said we get 2 weeks from the day it gets delivered. So I've gotten a iMac BTO on order, should be delivered on the 27, which should be right around the time of the promotion historically!
