If you don't have much invested in the app store I say move on from the iPhone and grab a iPad 10" or if not vapor ware the iPad mini and grab another brand Phone. So many flavors out to choose without the inonsence.

The iPhone 5 is great upgrade for an iPhone 4. I did the upgrade and I am very happy with it.
The only annoying thing so far is the lack of google maps like it was in iOS 5, and that certain Apps now don't allow for text selection but you have to select the whole message/sms/tweet, etc.
Those are minor stuff. About the camera, what is the issue you are afraid of? I only witness some intermittent issues with Skype and it is a software issue as with FaceTime and other Apps I don't see the purple line.
Skype needs to be updated.

The phone is way faster, the battery way better and the finally removed some steps to enable and disable bluetooth.
Go for the iPhone 5, you will like it and will not loose all your iOS Apps.

iTunes match now works fine for me, with the 4 was very spotty.

I pre ordered my black 32gb iPhone 5 and recieved it on launch day.
It was perfect. No scuffs, no bends, no battery problems.
I picked up a black 16gb iPhone 5 from RadioShack last Sunday and
the same thing, not a single issue.
I know some people have had legit problems, I also know there's a lot of things that get way overblown on the internet.

Before iOS 6 and the new iPhone, everything was great. After updating to iOS 6, my battery life has been cut in half (yes I've explored every option to fix it) and my bookmarks are stuck in sync so that I can't edit or delete them, nor can I add to my reading list...
(EDIT: for the record, I have an iPhone 4 currently)

I want the new iPhone and my upgrade is in the next month, but am cautious of buying a phone with a flawed camera and possibly a weaker than normal aluminum casing. I'm hoping these issues are worked out soon and that there will be an iOS update VERY soon. Never had an issue until this year, and I've owned an iPhone since the 3GS came out.

Anyone else frustrated and feel the same way? I wish there was another phone manufacturer I could go to and rely on, which makes it even harder to leave Apple. Just my thoughts in case anyone is interested!

I would say that if the phone and OS isn't what you want, then I'd move on to something else; whether it's the same brand, but different phone + OS, or completely different brand.

The camera "flaw" is absolutely not a flaw. It's merely an example of the internet being stupid.

iOS 6 gave me battery issues on my iPhone 4 initially and I had some bookmark issues, but I decided to do a clean restore and not restore from a backup and the whole OS and battery life included has been better than ever. I don't know why this would be or if they'll eventually address the issue with restoring from backups, but it was a night and day difference for me that was well worth the extra effort it took. I don't know if you tried this, and I know it's not ideal, but it very well may solve your issues and leave you with a better experience than before as it did for me.

And having just gotten the iPhone 5 today, I'm far more satisfied with Apple, the iPhone and iOS 6 than I realistically expected to be. Given the major increase in processing power and the incredibly smooth user experience even when compared to a 4S, it makes me think all the more that the iOS software has simply been a little bit ahead of the hardware, which in many ways makes sense when you really think about it. Now that this A6 chip can really do some heavy lifting, everything really seems to "just work."

For the last year, I thought iTunes Match was still just buggy, that the OS just had a few too many bugs in various spots, and most likely many of the apps too. Everything mostly "just worked" but it sputtered along at times and gave inconsistent performance. But after really putting this thing through it's paces today, again, I'm just blown away. It sails through a 24,500 song iTunes Match library faster than any iPhone 4 or 4S I've seen handle a sub-1000 song library that's synced through a computer. Everything is incredibly responsive and smooth, apps open faster and run better, AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring work with next to no noticeable lag, Photo Stream works exactly as it's supposed to. It's really incredible.

And honestly, I was expecting to be underwhelmed by the iPhone 5. I knew it'd be a worthwhile upgrade, but I didn't expect it to "feel" this different; truly, this much better. Aside from that, the weight is great, the phone is gorgeous, and sure, it may scratch, but honestly, it is aluminum, it's bound to happen if you're not careful. We shouldn't be surprised. But even if it gets a little scratched up, it won't change the incredible performance of this iPhone, and I imagine that people will ultimately be less bothered by a few scratches than cracked glass backplates.

I haven't been close to wanting to move on from Apple, though I wasn't blown away by them lately. I've kinda figured that they were in a growing stage and trying to figure out again how to wear a lot of different hats effectively without compromising on various products and deadlines. But the iPhone 5 has honestly changed my mind in just a day. This is no small advancement. It may not offer many if any crazy whiz-bang headlines telling of revolutionary new features, but this is refinement of a great product line at it's best.

Oh wait, there is one thing I hate about the iPhone 5: the headphone jack on the bottom! That, to me at least, is just THE WORST! Having used iPod Touches in the past with the headphone jack located on the bottom, I was fully expecting to be annoyed by this change, and man, does it bother me. Though it is likely more of an extreme pet peeve of mine, but I really do just hate it. I've been more than satisfied with everything about the iPhone 5 so far, but that damn headphone jack on the bottom just really irks me.

Can't win 'em all...

My camera is perfect and there is no flaw in the casing. The iPhone 5 is by far the best phone I've ever used. Apple's doing a great job. Your milage may vary.

I agree with you here. That plug on the bottom bugs me. I was hoping it wouldn't, but it just seems wrong. Other than that one thing, I love my new phone.

I usually change phones (when I need to) to get the latest and what I think is the best at the time. I have mainly been on iPhones but twice have I made the move to Android. Both times I have been thoroughly disappointed in Android and I won't be making that mistake again. Having used most phone OSs, iOS is clearly superior and so is the iPhone.

I won't be moving away from Apple again (at least not any time soon).

You do realize this statement answers ur own questions.

And btw, the purple haze in iPhones camera is not a flaw at all. It's totally normal and common in a lot of cameras. And its in every phone. And beings u can see it in the view finder, and it's only with a bright light source just outside the frame, and a super small adjustment removes it completely, it's not even an incovienence.

Move on if ur not happy, but u urself said there's nothing better. So basically everything else is worse. U don't make much sense.

The purple haze is a flaw many are experiencing. Whether or not it affects all iPhone 5's, I don't know. But any reasonable person would say the amount of purple haze in photos many are reporting is in fact a flaw. And the casing is flawed and weaker than it should be on many as well. I'm hoping that these issues may be fixed in a month once I'm due for an upgrade. I refuse to go through purchasing and returning multiple phones to find the perfect one like some have had to do.

I would go Android, but any phone I have tried out has software issues that seem to never get fixed and the phones slow down for no logical reason after using them for a few weeks/months. WP8 is not quite mature enough yet in my opinion, but it does look interesting.
Okay what. You don't even own the phone but all of a sudden you're the authority on it? Wat.

Wirelessly posted

I believe the iOS6 "upgrade" on the OP's iPhone 4 has left a bad Apple taste in his mouth. I can relate: the irreversible slowdown from iOS4 to iOS5 on mine was very frustrating and, in my opinion, should not have happened. I can sympathize with brand new features running more slowly on older devices, but things like typing lag and reduced smoothness almost feel intentional by Apple. There's no hardware limitations on features that remain the same.

I'm not a conspiracy guy but I also don't make excuses for Apple. I can envision a lack of trust in a company that *may* be intentionally handicapping older devices to encourage upgrading. I do not have proof, but plenty of people suspect it.

My iPhone 4 battery life was severely hampered after upgrading to iOS6 as well. Unless it's a common problem, I'm guessing Apple won't do much about it.

I have the iPhone 5 now, and mine had some minor scratches right out of the box. Also where the speaker holes are, there's some minor peeling of the anodizing. Knowing that many people suffered these issues, I just decided to keep it. Even with these flaws, there's nothing on the market by any other manufacturer that even comes close to the physical design of this phone, IMHO.

Batt life however, is fantastic. Whatever is in iOS6 that's killing the i4, it's not happening at all on the i5.

I think part of the problem is our perception of the phone, since we're now in a new marketplace where the competition is more fierce than ever. When the iPhone 4 came out, it literally obliterated the competition. It was the best phone on the market, by far. Now that the i5 is here amongst other fantastic phones, the i5 a great phone, but hardly leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. Many would argue it doesn't quite measure up either.

In the end, I feel it's still the best phone when all things are considered, but I'm concerned it won't be next time around.

take it from me ive had every smart phone from att windows phones htc one x, S1, S2, S3 and unlocked nexus, Dell streak etc... you name it i had it im a phone whore!!! cant help it but i always come back to the iphone, i currently have the iphone 5 and love it but will buy the new nexus, nokia 920, note 2 and then sell em and go back to an iphone, wish i can post up my craigslist add history, trust me if you can give android or whatever phone u want a try do it but you will be back.

Yep it's time buddy.

They're experiencing it in conditions where they induce it. If you point a camera sensor at the sun, you're going to get lots of artifacts. Glare and purple fringing are just two of them.

And the iPhone 5 isn't the only camera that does this. LOTS of digital cameras do. Including the iPhone 4S, which strangely no one seemed to complain about, and yet...

Image

I guarantee you it does. But unless your hobby is to take pictures of the sun with your smartphone camera, you're probably not going to be plagued by it.

By what standard? We've seen, maybe a half dozen incidents of bent cases. That makes up 0.00012% of the iPhone 5s sold thus far. Not exactly numbers that amount to a design flaw.

Show me 10%, or even 5%, and maybe it'll be time to consider a product recall.

I guarantee you, the hardware isn't going to change in a month.

An absolute myth. See the links in my signature.

It's amazing how quickly we forget "antennagate" and the mysterious case of the cracking iPhone 3Gs, making molded plastic the worst design decision, ever. Or how the iPhone 4 glass backing was prone to breakage and therefore, it was the worst design decision ever, until, well the iPhone 5 casing was the worst design decision, ever.

Then don't. Clearly, the mere chance of maybe something not being right with your iPhone 5 and the hassle of dealing with it outweighs the issues you've talked about with going Android or Windows Phone. So, go get one of those, and be less-unhappy. Or stay with your iPhone 4, since that's at least a known quantity and it can't get any "worse" for you.

Thank you for cleaning up the utter crap and blatant ignorance that makes reading the forum less enjoyable. I don't know what it is but the forum in the past year have turned into just a bunch of brain farts, short sited, extremely subject ignorant uneducated posts.

My iPhone 5 was perfect out of box and my daughters too. Every time a new iPhone comes out things are overblown, I'm not saying there haven't been issue but I would bet 85% of the phones were perfect. It happens every year when millions are sold in a couple of days. Apple is excellent at taking care of their customers.

best. post. ever. you explained everything that i've been trying to explain to these nay sayers just right.

My iPhone was flawless out the box too... Am i missing something here? Its a fact that within the first month or two of a new phone launch there will be kinks with the manufacturing process, there will be more defective units... Yea its unfortunate for those who have gotten a defective one but the kinks and defective units will go down dramatically in a month or so... Just spitting facts

best. post. ever. you explained everything that i've been trying to explain to these nay sayers just right.

I see the purple flare in my camera... And all i have to do for it to go away is just slightly point my camera just a tiny bit away from the light source that ever so very slightly creeps into the light sensor... And when I do that voila a perfect picture comes out

I think the next iPhone will be even better, something tells me there going to overhaul the look of the UI, increase the megapixel count to 10-12 MP and probably increase battery life etc and have a faster processor which is usually how it always is... They will learn from this launch

http://appleinsider.com/articles/12...d-to-iphone-5-android-cameras-also-have-flare

Consumer reports came out today and said that the Purple hazing in the camera is present in most Cellphones.
The Iphone5 is a fine piece of equipment. Yes the case is subject to scuffing under wear & tear but thats nothing that having a good case on it wont solve. IOS6 has given us many new and useful features. Overall its a great phone with plenty of bells and whistles.

Flawed? While there are some legitimate issues I have a Black 5 16 GB and it works and looks perfect and my wife has one as well.

My wife's first 5 did not get LTE but replaced by Apple we are both Happy. I have had every phone since the 3G and each model has gotten better each year. Loved the 3G then the 2GS got better then the 4 with glass and retina. The 4S was a little boost from the 4 except the camera was major. The 5 is really nice and I tried the Samsung SG3 just before the 5, while it is a nice phone and performed really well, I have spent so much time and money around the iPhone it was just an easy decision to go for the 5.

I ca not tell you what to do but just get one in your hands it is an improvement over the 4S and I loved the 4S and didn't need to upgrade but glad I did

I would quote and speak directly to everyone, but it looks like there's too many posts for me to do that now, sorry I was busy for a few hours.

Anyway, yes this iOS 6 mess that has screwed up my iPhone 4 as far as battery life, bookmarks, and reading list goes has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Yes, I have exhausted every possible solution besides restoring as a new phone without backing up. I simply can't do that and have too much valuable info and it would be incredibly time consuming to redo everything from scratch. Then again, I shouldn't have to do that in the first place.

Apples motto has been "it just works", well this time it didn't just work, which has caught me by surprise. Android is okay.. but I'd be back to the iPhone I'm sure like I have done in the past.

The lens flare IS NOT in my iPhone 4. Obviously you guys have pointed out that the flare can be eliminated by barely moving the camera, and if that's true then it just makes it a minor annoyance rather than a deal-breaker.

Yes, I could go through multiple units within 14 days if I have a problem, but at ATT that can be rather tedious and troublesome, compared to a more knowledgeable Apple store that sadly is no where near me. I'll be hoping for the best next month and praying Apple releases a small update to patch the bugs I'm having right now. My battery life being obliterated from some bug in iOS 6 is not okay. When you pay good money for a product, you expect a good product.

Thanks to all who had helpful and thoughtful comments!! To all the jerks that think y'all are smarter or above others clearly by the condescending manner you speak, go swim in a shark tank. :)

Why not try to save your contacts, music, photos, etc on a file on your computer? And do a clean restore then just drag and drop the file back on your iPhone? Thats what I did with my brothers iPhone 4, his phone was slow as ****, so I exported his photos, videos and notes etc to a new file on the computer, synced all his contacts to Yahoo, and I did a clean fresh restore and just dragged everything back on the phone and it was brand new fast with all his stuff back on there

You cant spend 15-20 mins of your day to restore your phone? You must be a very busy guy then.... Sometimes a update slows your phone or messes some things up, it happens... Luckily Apple provides a easy way to fix things like this but you wont just do it...

As for the lens flare issue, it can be completely eliminated in pictures if you know how to... Doesnt take a genius

I have a Windows computer, so it makes it a little more complicated..
And I could tell you almost anything about phone technology, but not as well versed with doing all that on a computer. My phone is the same speed as it was with iOS 6, just having the issues with battery, bookmarks and reading list. I'm hoping Apple will release a bug fix update soon. They created the problem, and I expect them to fix it. Hopefully enough people are having these issues that Apple will take notice and fix it. I don't expect such a large and valuable company to do something only for me, just in case anyone were to make that assumption.
