If you shatter your iPhone X's back glass, having AppleCare+ is even more worthwhile. Apple's flat rate is $549 for this type of damage

And that is because why? Apple decided to solder the black glass panel to the whole frame of the phone just so they can charge that kind of money, like they did on iPhone 8?

I totally understand screen replacement price, since its OLED, but back glass? For that amount of money you can get brand new Galaxy S8. This really is amazing how stupid Apple is becoming with that kind of pricing.

Whenever they replace the back panel they also replace the entire rear camera assembly. The charges are still outrageous.

Another thing people don't know: Apple phone support is free, and has been for at least a year. You no longer need AppleCare to get out-of-warranty support.

Don't believe it? Try calling Apple Support on an out-of-warranty Apple product. They'll still help you, and for free.

You are incorrect. It is not free past 90 days. However Apple customer service will cater to us anyway because we are their customers. It’s a curtesy when they take care of us outside of warranty, not an obligation. Apple take great pride in having some of the best customer service in the world. If taking phone calls outside of warranty helps get their scores up, then it’s a small price to pay.

Call me crazy, but I've had the best support from Apple, and always buy AppleCare. It's been well worth it.

Most of my early iPhones were bought through AT&T, and their 'insurance' was expensive, and sucked. AppleCare was great as an option.

But, you do you... I don't generally get the 'support contracts' from other retailers, working at Circuit City taught me that, but Apple products, yeah.

Its another disgusting thing that Apple does that I (like the good sheep I am) pay for every time I get a new iPhone.

Ive said it once, ill say it again: AppleCare+ should be free for all products as a way of Apple giving back to the public that have made it an almost trillion dollar company.

Apples Greed is absolutely boundless. Im still shaking my head that X doesnt come with airpower in the box!

So you want Apple to give free accidental damage warranty because they are a very profitable company? They’re very profitable because they make devices people like and people buy them by the millions. Apple deserves to be very profitable. Also you want AirPower for free? Why should Apple design a new wireless technology that is an entirely different device in its own and give it away for free? The iPhone comes with a charger, you may not think it’s good enough, but it comes with one. AirPower also is not ready to be shipped because it’s new technology in it that isn’t ready yet.

You probably wanted AirPod to be included free with the iPhone X as well huh, sure let’s just add an Apple Watch too.

I’m more concerned with losing my phone somehow or it being stolen more than cracking the glass. For this, AppleCare+ is worthless and I’m much happier with Total Mobile Protection from Verizon which does cover the device if it’s lost or stolen. Big difference between the two coverages. Plus, I can pay $11/month for TMP versus having to pay the $199 upfront with AC+, allowing me to keep more cash liquid.

If you have the iUP you pay for Apple Care per month so there is no large $199 upfront payment. They just tack on a few bucks to your monthly device payment. No needed for a refund for unused protection either since you only pay for coverage for the months you actually have the phone.

After spending at least a thousand dollars on a brand new iPhone X, you may be debating whether it's really worth it to spend an additional few hundred dollars on an AppleCare+ plan to insure your shiny new smartphone.

Shouldnt Macrumors put a very large ADVERTISEMENT above "articles" like this??

LOL wat?
No manufacturer is going to replace a phone that is damaged or broken by the user...

Why would a rear glass replacement be “other” and more expensive than a screen replacement? Kinda doesn’t makes sense. I’d demand the rear glass be covered for the same cost as the front glass.

Lol...
Go ahead and try that one out in an Apple store...

Ive never bought apple care ever....and luckily Ive never a situation that required it.

300 bucks for something that might never be used is not something I can get my head around easily.

Guess you never heard the phrase “better safe than sorry.”

People don’t buy insurance with the intent to file claims, they buy insurance to give peace of mind if an accident were to happen. Accidents do happen, that’s why there is insurance. Y’all too busy worrying, if your device don’t break you’ll be giving away money to Apple. Looking at it the wrong way smh.

People also seem to forget unlike other 3rd party insurance, with Apple Care Plus, you’re phone gets fixed right at the Genius Bar when possible using original parts, most times it’s fixed or replaced the same day. Also if you only keep your phone for one year, you can get a prorated refund for the unused year of Apple Care Plus. It’s a first class service no other insurance company can match.

It just happens that I don't care about paying a **** ton of money for something that may never come into play. If they priced it properly I might consider. Till then I prefer to live on the edge. Ive been very lucky with apple products because I research their flaws here before jumping on.

Thats is why I would never buy iPhone X blind...will spend a few months here listening to all the folks venting about any issues and folks like you defending....then I'll make up my own mind. When iPad air came out it was this forum that alerted me to the screen problem...and helped me avoid it. Haven't needed apple care for the almost 7 apple products Ive purchased over the years.

It’s worth the peace of mind honestly which is why I never use cases on my phones. I’ve only had to use AppleCare twice in the last 5 years and one of them was just a warranty swap after the first year, which if you don’t have AppleCare, you’re SOL and have to pay out of pocket.

I didn’t know they started adding a fee to returning the AppleCare. I did that one year and got $60 back (I only had the 6 for 9 months when I sold the phone and returned the AppleCare).

If you are actually paying the full $11 coverage thats pretty dumb. There’s a $7 policy they have that covers accidents and loss, not sure why you want to pay $4 for telephone support???

Honestly, the better question is: Is it worth buying the iPhone X?

A few days until we see if they pulled this one off or not. I'm skeptical.

I think next year's model will be the one to buy. This years model is going to be $1k of regret when everyone sees all that got fixed and improved between it and next years.

The vast majority of iPhone users end up putting their phone in a case, so the odds of them breaking the back is pretty slim.
Depends on the case. Otterbox Defender or similar, okay. Some other cases, not so okay. I dropped my 5s in an Otterbox Defender case on a concrete surface, picked it up, business as usual. Sure, they're bulky and not sleek, it won't allow you to show off your "look at me & my $1,000++ iPhone" iPhony nature and you better not let Jony see it, but it does save your rear and your wallet from time to time.

After breaking my phone a few times, I began following a few simple rules, and have not damaged or broken an iPhone in 3-4 years.
1. Don't use phone while opening, closing, and locking doors. That includes talking
2. The hand that carrying the phone, carries only the phone. The pocket with the phone, carries only the phone
3. If I am drunk or walking, I only use my phone with 2 hands.
4. Use my phone primarily when sitting or in bed.

I understand the whole concept of applecare+, but in Europe and most countries, your iPhone can be added to your house insurance as a personal belonging. It will be way cheaper than the 199USD or 199GBP being charged (and you'll have unlimited repairs or replacements). The big advantage of house insurance on your iPhone compared to applecare+ is that even if your phone is stolen, it will get replaced.

Years ago, I had an iPhone fall off a yacht and the whole price was given as a cheque in order to get it replaced.

Agreed. consumer law in the UK covers hardware defects for 6 years from date of delivery as long as the Apple product is directly bought from Apple, I believe. Therefore unless you require accidental damage, it is definitely not worth buying. They'll even replace you battery for free if it holds less than 80% charge, as long as it's still within the consumer law's 6 year period.

Not completely correct. All purchases in the UK are covered by the Consumer Rights Act. This gives you upto six years to make a claim. However, after the first 6 months, the onus is on the purchaser to prove the fault is an inherent one, however most retailers only ask for this proof after 1 year.

Not worth it to me. AppleCare is getting to be stupid expensive. Plus its only an extra year warranty for $200. I got 5 year warranties for both my new washer and dryer for the same price.

This article is patently FALSE! I have contacted Apple about even non-servicable products and they still respond and they'll still service my iPhone 5s.

Unless you're trading in Apple Care for Store credit, it's a complete and utter rip-off.

All of these charges are so off the charts crazy, unless you're Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, who can afford this stupid phone that couldn't even recognize its demonstrator? LOL

I don't see this ending well for Apple on multiple levels even without Craig Federighi's "HO HO HO!"

Every iPhone since 6 was simply too big.
All of them are too hard to hold with one hand, they are slippery and I was always anxious about letting them fall.
6, 6s, 7, 7s, 8, X...
Just too HUGE.
Never needed AppleCare with any of normal, small iPhones before.
I keep my SE and its wonderful to hold and use.
Sure it doesnt have full front size display, FaceID or great camera but its better to have the last small iPhone which will not get destroyed on the second day, than the newest one which is unacceptably big and has the same slippery form factor since 4 years o_O

i dislike how this article is written. it's almost biased against AppleCare+.

it is absolutely worth it. yeah, the $199 is higher than it is for any other phone but the phone is the most expensive one yet. prices vary based on Mac model too, but no one has complained about that... not to mention that there is AppleCare+ for Mac now not just the regular AppleCare (the latter, sadly, I have on my 2015 15" maxed out rMBP)

nonetheless, looking at it as costing the upfront cost + incident fee makes it seem like it costs so much more. if you incorporate the cost of AppleCare+ into either the cost of the phone or as it is with the iPhone Upgrade Program, it's almost a no-brareduced instances of a reduced-cost service fee for damage for a phone that's $999+? hell, even $449+? absolutely. nobody wants to pay $279 to get a display replaced or $579 for any other reason. sure, if you're the accident prone type, AppleCare+ may expend sooner than you'd like but it's absolutely worth it as itll save you quite a bit in the beginning.

knowitalls are gonna favor their carrier insurance because it's $11/mo but end up at the genius bar anyway because their third party display that they paid $319 to get their cracked iPhone X fixed by asurion either doesn't charge now or is unresponsive to touch (eye roll) and then get upset at Apple for charging them the normal out of warranty/accidental damage cost for a display replacement that they could've gotten done for $29 if they had AppleCare+ or knew about it before/when they bought their device. part of it is in the lack of education about this service by carrier store employees anyway since they, naturally, favor their own insurance which ends up being a bite in the arse anyway. granted, carrier insurance is worth it if you lose your phone... i guess.

never had AppleCare+ on anything until i bought my 6s Plus last year. every Apple hero product I bought since then has AppleCare+. it just makes sense. I've had any damage incidents, fortunately, but the coverage after that first year certainly comes in handy.

but.... as others have said.... just don't break your phone lol

Just got an Apple Watch from John Lewis (in UK). Their accidental cover was £25 for two years cover including full replacement of repair not possible. No excess charge. Apple Care is £59 for essentially the same cover plus you have to pay an excess charge to make a claim.
