I am looking to buy a new car, I have seen a red Mercedes with CarPlay which I find pretty appealing, anyway I am wondering is red a girly colour for a car I don’t want a girly looking car.

Red is traditionally a more masculine colour in many cultures (including in the West traditionally) red = blood = killing enemies = great warrior = masculine.

Women + red = prostitute is also the traditional view for much of history.

Much of this is, of course, a social construct which is hilarious.

And, equally hilarious is the sort of brittle and insecure masculinity which poses such a question when considering the purchase of a car.

But, but, but, taking a flying leap back to the nineteenth century, at that time, blue and red (or pink) had different constructs, the polar opposite of what they are supposed to have today. Red was seen as more of a masculine shade, whereas blue was considered to be more feminine.

And, while we are on the topic of gloriously gory blood, let's take a look at menstrual blood or that of the afterbirth - these can also also come in a fetching shade of red.

A social construct but surely a very ancient one - the Romans wore red military capes and we have the British redcoats from the very early modern era. As you say the inversion is a very recent one. Purple incidentally was unisex but very much considered a royals only colour because of its rarity

A guy in a red MBNZ convertible parks next to me. The car isn’t for me and he carries himself like a douche but it’s not exactly a girl car (it’s pushing it). We had a gold MBNZ roadster which my wife kept. That was a chick car I thought. Be prepared to pay for the maintenance.

Ps - cops don’t care what the color of your car is. Haha.

But, economics also influence what are perceived (and conceived) as social constructs; red dyes (madder) were cheap and widely available.

Blues were more expensive and the cheaper blues held their shade less well, and thus, were harder to maintain; the most expensive dye of all - lapis - was reserved for the very wealthy, (or the Church, when, say, depicting the cloak of Mary).

However, yes, porphyry was reserved for depicting royalty, of both genders.

I’ve never heard of red being a girly car colour. Of course, red mixed with white gives pink which would be seen as less masculine

I had a red BMW M3 and i loved it...

but if you need reassurance from a bunch of strangers on the internet then I think you are better off going with a different color, otherwise its going to be in the back of your mind the whole time. The last thing you need is to spend a bunch of money on a car only to feel self conscious driving it around... Just my 2 cents

Agreed. Get what you want (for whatever reasons). I got a red car, cause i actually like red cars (The one opinion which matters regarding my car, is my own.)

Well, they don’t call it “sorority girl red” without reason :p

In all seriousness, I don’t think a red car is feminine or masculine. Buy whatever you like.

Personally I’d be more concerned about Mercedes reliability. I know a number of people who have bought Mercedes relatively recently and have had a lot of issues compared to other German makes. I own a BMW myself, anecdotally speaking BMW and Audi seem to have better longevity than Mercedes these days. Mercedes aren’t what they used to be. That said, lower reliability and high repair costs is part of owning these cars.

Personally I find CarPlay a bit over rated. It has tons of potential but Apple seems to content keeping it castrated and it’s development on the back burner. If Apple allowed Google Maps to have a CarPlay app, I’d be a much more useful program.

In Far East cultures Women + Red = Bride.

As for car color, I let the Missus decide. I'm more interested in its go faster function rather than its aesthetic. If she leave it up me to decide, I would go with Black or White because it's easy to color match when you get the inevitable door ding.:D
