That's weird. I just put mine in airplane mode (so it had no data connection) and all of the email that it had previously downloaded pulls up fine.

Many of my concerns have been addressed by the local Apple Store or AppleCare almost immediately. IMHO many of the complaints have been expressed by a minority of iPhone owners here on MacRumors, but I feel the majority of "satisfied" iPhone owners have no forum to express their sentiments. These are the ones that strongly recommend the Apple iPhone to their friends and relatives, without reservation! I've recommended the Apple iPhone to friends, family and Tribal Governments, at the drop of a hat. Again, IMHO.

I am on my 4th phone.

1. First phone lost sound on day one.

2. Second phone I had for several months until the bottom 3rd of the touch screen went out.

3. Third phone would not ring while in standby mode since day one.

The 4th phone seems to be working great after 1 month. Hope it sticks.

Even with going through 3 of these phones, I'm still satisfied. Apple was willing to replace them. I don't drop them, jailbrake them, nothing.

I guess my only complaint would be quality control. If Apple is going to exchange broken phones with re-furbished products, they should make darn sure the phones are better tested.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard of the HTC's keyboard as being touted as better than iPhone's.

Not to many people have heard of it or used it. Before I bought it I searched high and low for a functioning/working model so I could test it. It took me a while before I found out I had to ask the sales rep for a working model to test.

Besides the keyboard, the rest of the phone is really a Windows Mobile phone with candy software. I am reaching the point where the phone doesn't ring or do ANYTHING when someone calls. I turn it on hours later and get bombarded by missed calls and new voicemail. This has been happening to a lot of users too.

Apple - ready to set new standards in sub-standard products? ;)
cough June cough cough

To be more serious - what is everyone's definition of standards? If you're looking for different things, they're going to be different, right?

From the moon on a stickers, to the I just want the features sub $100 phones all have.

So my question: Is the iPhone a substandard product?

I feel it has been 'rushed' into production, to the detriment of build quality. If apple was hoping to win over non-mac fans to the apple cause, I feel the iPhone may have done more harm than good. (in addition, ALL of my non-iPhone loving friends have cited no MMS, bad camera and lack of bluetooth connectivity as main reasons not to get an iPhone)

Your question and related comments are extremely odd things to be presenting on the eve of Apple's rollout of an updated device.

Think about it. Ten months down the road from the original rollout, with a few weeks to go before a newer iPhone arrives, you advise us that you've decided that the original iPhone was rushed into production, had build quality problems and your friends did not like its features or found them lacking?

I have a news flash for you. In 2008, with a 2000 Prizm sitting in the driveway, I could tell you that my 1988 Ford sucked. I could say that the Prizm sucks as well, but that would be Big Lie #2 even if the Prizm is also past ancient now by new-every-2 standards...

Your guess that Apple's original iPhone may not have won any new fans for Macs is probably just a tad off the mark, too. But perhaps you do not follow their quarterly earnings reports, know any switchers or what brought them around to Apple, etc. It's okay. One of the great things about MacRumors is the level of tolerance people usually display towards each other's occasional postings of arrant nonsense :p

That happened with me and I returned the phone. What I had to do was actually show the guy at the Genius bar what was happening using my wife's cell phone.

Well, just from the reviews I've read, most of them consider it hard to use without a stylus. Are you using a third-party keyboard program? I've heard that some of the alternatives are much better than the stock keyboard.

Genuinely curious, not trying to give you a hard time. I really enjoy using the iPhone keyboard so if someone's found a way to do it one better, I'd like to check it out.

Errant? ;)

You make a valid point - it's a decent technology, at an ok price, at the time. Take a look back at the keynotes over the years - those cheers are part fanboy, part pride of Apple - they have pushed the limit, made people buck up and catch up -

e.g. 1999 and Airport
e.g. 2007 and iPhone

That's my HTC Touch running Windows Mobile.

It's okay, I have calmed down greatly now.

The keyboard on the USA/Sprint version was changed when it hit the states. I am not too sure about the previous model. I do know that it had just a regular QWERTY keyboard that I don't think even a skeleton could type on. The new one has the XT9 thing, with bigger buttons.

I suppose it depends, on my third iphone right now and this one is perfect, i mean perfect, the case is lined up perfectly "no gaps" no sharp bit round the edge as it's 100% flush, no dead pixels, all buttons have a solid click to them, no loose home button, it's solid and has a solid click to it also, no scratches, scuffs etc... etc....., i think it's just the luck of the draw, you could go and buy 10 iphones and no two would be the same, it also depends on one's definition of "perfect" "fine" "good" "bad" etc...., a dead pixel might not be noticeable to one person, but make another want to exchange, thats my opinion anyway.

Thanks for reading ... .. .
