Does the iPhone XR feel too thick?

Like many, I'll be holding onto these things much longer now.

From what Apple was saying during the September 2018 keynote, that's what they want Apple users to do: keep their device for longer. I've so far changed my iPhone every 4 years so spending more money for a device that lasts this much or even longer doesn't bother me too much. The issue now is that you better be happy with your choice otherwise upgrading after 1-2 years will be very expensive!

Compared to current offerings sure, but not to legacy phones. Look at the new IPP, thinner and less weight than my current 12.9 which is why I'm upgrading. Back to the phones, larger, heavier, umm no.

To achieve those dimensions, 12.9" iPad Pro (2018) loses a few things compared to the old model. The battery capacity has been reduced by more than 10%, while the camera loses OIS and has fewer glass elements.

iPhone 6 is thin but it's prone to bending, lacks wireless charging, and has a small camera sensor.

Never had any issues with the bending personally. And I'm still not buying into the wireless charging thing. Love the idea but would rather spend the extra cash on something else. I'm also someone that moves around my charger a lot in my house. Plus you can't use and hold your phone while charging it :/

I don't think it's too thick at all. Actually is nicer to pick up when laying flat on a desk.

I got it today. It is thicker than Xiaomi Redmi note 5 .. and heavier.. and from iPhone 6...

IDGAF. I never take pics with my iPad, ever. I have a phone or real camera for that. Battery, meh, I use the pad at home, it's irrelevant.

Apple can certainly design a new 6 form factor phone with full screen, and wireless charging. If they can make the new iPad smaller and lighter they can do the same with the phone. For all this talk of cameras you'd think people were world class photographers needing every little thing possible in a camera. It's a selfie generation thing I guess.

I love it. I’m a small woman, and I put it in my pocket easily and am astonished when men a lot bigger than I am say they can’t easily carry a phone that size on them or even hold it.

I guess the problem with men is they’ve got to carry too much in their pockets. I do have the luxury of a purse or bag or a small backpack when I want to be a technological marsupial.

Perhaps if the aluminum chassis was thinner the XR could be more susceptible to bending, and we know how that went last time.

You know, it's funny you mention gender. When I was returning my XR for being too big today, I happened to notice that the employee helping me had her XS Max crammed in her front pocket in her tight jeans, but it sat on her thigh much more flush than it does on mine. For me, whenever I bend at the waist, the phone digs right into my pelvis/hip area, and it doesn't really sit flat anywhere. Another male employee who was there today agreed with me and used an SE, so go figure.

I think some of it has to do with one's desire to remain "ready for action," or whatever, because I get in similar conversation on watch forums. Some guys like wearing big, steel watches on somewhat loose steel bracelets that flop around a bit. For me, whether it be a watch or a phone, if it gets in the way of athletic movement, it drives me nuts, so I guess I'm doomed to only use the SE until it croaks.

Yeah I see your point. Just a few years ago, when I was chasing toddlers and small kids around the park, I was really mad just about the small size change from the iPhone 4 to the 5s I upgraded to. I almost forgot about how mad I was. Lol back then, I asked my husband why they could not have just made the screen bigger and shrunk those huge bezels.

Ah but I’m dealing with tweens and teens these days. A fast waddle will suffice. :D

:) If it wasn't for the camera and LogMeIn, I could probably survive with just the Apple Watch. LogMeIn was the reason I tried the larger screen on the XR, but it wasn't worth it to me.

I've used the 6+ since launch, and earlier this year upgraded to the 8 to try out smaller phones.

I have the XR now, and its definitely feels thicker than either phone. My main complaint with the 6+ is that its just a tad too tall so when I sit, it also digs into my pelvis/hip area. The XR is just short enough that it doesn't dig into my pelvis as much. I do have a slightly thicker case than my old cases so it feels even thicker than my previous phones, but its not too bad.

I can see if coming from the smaller phones, moving to the XR may take a longer adjustment period.

If the XR was simply thicker and heavier with no increase in battery life, I wouldn't be as happy. I've always wished the phone was slightly thicker for additional battery gains...and finally I got what I wished. I enjoy the all day (and sometimes 2 days) worth of battery life! :)

I tried it in store today as potential upgrade from my 6s.

Found it great as it is and no too big BUT concerned it will just be too bulky with a case on. Am now thinking of going without case and maybe just a skin on the back and a screen protector.

All I ever see are women or girls with their phones stuck in their back pockets, for all to see, I always wonder what’s the theft rate like for them? Literally it’s the fashion here in the UK and every girl carry’s their phone like this. Apart from my sister who keeps hers in her bag and she never answers the damn thing as she can’t hear it!!

The weight difference between both phones is really not that much (XSMax:208g / XR: 194g). They're both still heavier than most smartphones out there. The thickness though is noticeable, especially coming from a 6. Is it just a question of getting used to though? And is it bothering in every day life use (putting it in your pants, holding it and so on)?
Coming from a 6 any of the newer models there’s going to be a noticible difference. That said you’ll get use to it within a few days.

I was wondering if the thickness of the XR been bothering anyone who's gotten it so far? .

I doubt anyone that’s chosen the XR has any genuine complaints that it’s ‘too thick’ (Except on a tech forum). If you look at the iPhone in retrospect ten years ago compared to where the iPhone is today, these phones are incredibly thin and powerful, and I doubt The complaint of the XR is the thickness.

That's what drives me crazy about my wife. Even her iPhone 6 is too big for her front pockets, so her phone is usually in her purse, so she never answers it, especially at home. I did convince her to wear an Apple Watch for a while, but that didn't last long. lol

Agreed. If it was the same thickness, but the size of an SE, I'd be fine with it, but the large size plus the thickness forced me to return it.

Your sister needs an Apple Watch if she’s on an iPhone. That’s how I know my phone is ringing if it’s in my bag. I do okay with my phone in my back pocket most places. Lol, most women I know are pretty aware of when a hand sneaks toward their backside. ;)

I guess it varies by region but where I live I have not heard of anyone getting pick pocketed in years. I remember when I was a kid in the 70’s people talking about that. Now it’s pretty much straight up mugging or robbery with a weapon involved and in that case it doesn’t matter whether your phone is in a pocket or a purse.
