Does the iPhone XR feel too thick?

After using an X it does feel much thicker and is my only concern so far with switching to the XR. I prefer thin cases like the Totalee so I’m hoping when I get that in the next couple of days it will help, I’m using a big temporary clear case for now.

I’m actually surprised is thread is still progressing, there is nothing ‘Thick’ about the iPhone XR. If you want to discuss a thick iPhone, look 10 years ago from when it first started , compared to today, it’s nowhere even near being ‘Thick’. Then again, this complaints only originate on tech forums, not in real world usage.

“In your opinion” to many of us it’s thick and we can discuss what we like.

It’s definitely my opinion, which I think was rather obvious, but thanks for noting. Speaking of which, I never stated anyone _couldn’t_ discuss the topic, perhaps you could retract your statement with that oversight. Either way, my point was and still is, it’s a non-issue in terms of the comparison used between iPhone XR ten years until today.

I handled one at local BestBuy. Yes, it's a bit thick to me (coming from iphone 6).
Coming from a 6 I think anything from 7 on up would feel on the thicker side. I just sold my 6 that I kept as a backup and when handling it all I could think of was wow this feels like a toy in my hand now as compared to me having since owned a 7+, 8+ and XR

I did notice it being little thicker but nothing that would deter me from buying it (coming from iPhone 6s)

The XR is certainly a thicker and heavier phone than a 7.
Also, it's the iPhone with the longest battery life. And didn't we always ask for adding a little thickness for better battery life?
Apple delivered. I'm happy.

Thickness in real world usage has nothing to do with actual thickness. If you have a phone with a rounded back or a case that becomes thicker at the center of the phone (e.g. the SP-connect case), that thickness won't be noticed. What matters is the perceived thickness at the edge of the phone -and there's a noticable difference on the XR vs older iPhones. And, no, the XR isn't thick on absolute scale, but relative to other iPhones, it is. (Not that I would care...)

Nah, I've always thought the plus sized iPhones felt too thin without a case, and felt better for being a bit thicker with one handling wise.

TThickness in real world usage has nothing to do with actual thickness.

Strange quote, but I understand what you’re saying. The iPhone XR is not thick at all, and my relation to a phone 10 years ago, when ‘Smart phones’ were heavy and thick phone compared to today, even though they are larger, they are still incredibly thin, and complaining about a few ‘millimeters’ of thickness on a tech forum isn’t really anything compared to Real world usage, when the majority of consumers are subject to phones, thickness is the last thing They think about.

it’s not to thick but it could be lighter. The glass back and wireless charging. Is less useful than people think. Without the Glass back and wireless charging the iPhone would be much lighter

The Wireless charging is nothing more than a small coil, it hardly adds any weight to the iPhone whatsoever, it’s the glass back and the stainless steel bands that are primarily the concerns for the additional weight.

I came from a 6 so thought it looked huge and thick at first, but within a day I was used to it and love it. Even now with a case I am happy with it and the size causes no issue whatsoever, in fact I much prefer the bigger screen and impressive battery life.

The glass back is where the weight comes from. If Apple did a plastic or kevlar back to allow wireless charging, then people would complain that it didn't look as "premium" before stuffing it in a case and covering the back anyway...

If the phone is too heavy for you, get a gym membership and see if that helps...

There is nothing that can justify its thickness and heaviness. It is thicker and heavier than samsung galaxy s7 edge but the s7 edge has still better battery life and has even higher capacity battery than iphone xr. So why is it so heavy as a brick? Definitely not because of a "good battery life".
Besides, I am really disappointed of the battery life, for me when I bought it and it still had 50% juice in it, it only lasted 4 hours and I only used it for checking the Maps occasionally.

Very disappointing.

iPhone XR has excellent battery life. Not an issue with ours.

I think you should investigate your phone's performance further. The XR has been somewhat controversial (as seen all over this very thread), but it's received near-universal acclaim for battery life. If yours is only getting 4 hours of limited use on 50% juice, then something might be wrong with it. In Settings -> Battery, which apps are using the most power? Maybe something you're running is a battery hog, and you aren't aware of it.

Upgraded from a 7 to an XR a week ago.

Is the XR too thick?

First up, it depends if you have a case. If you don’t have a case you’re crazy as this thing is a heavy glass sandwich and it’s not going to survive a drop unscathed.

Even if you have a thin case that protects against scratches you’re crazy as it’s still going to shatter on a drop.

So let’s assume that you have a silicone or padded plastic / carbon case. Your XR is now definitely noticeably heavy and a little thicker than when you saw it in the store - and it was already pretty heavy and thick even then.

Is that a deal breaker?

I’d definitely prefer a thinner phone, however...

...The battery life and screen are amazing.

And yes, you read that right, the XR does have a great lcd screen! The edge to edge display is amazing (and on a black XR with a black case you just don’t notice the bezel). And of course, the lcd Liquid Retina display adds some thickness - let’s hope they can shave off a few mm for the xr2.

And did I mention the battery life? It’s epic. You will suddenly go from being always anxious about your phone’s battery life (unless you had a plus with a relatively new battery) to simply not caring.

You’re just not going to run out of charge if you are at work, going about your daily business at the weekend etc.

But that battery life adds on some thickness and it’s worth it.

And for me, those two things justify the thickness.

Plus finally, humans are adaptable. I thought I’d hate having a size bigger than my 5S when I got my 7 and then really it’s fine. You get used to it.

Of course I’m looking forward to having a thinner and lighter phone as battery tech, screen tech and processor tech all gets better. But for then moment the XR is great.

And did I mention that amazing battery life?

I doubt the average consumer shares your perception on the XR thickness/weight. Think about it, what’s the first thing someone does when they buy an iPhone? They had a case, so right they are already makes it ‘thicker and heavier’ by adding that. I’m also willing to believe the consumer would rather have a thicker iPhone if that means acquiring more battery life, being how much we rely on our our phones throughout our day.

I don’t think it’s too thick, but I think it’s just slightly too heavy. Not an issue but I’d prefer it to be maybe 10% lighter.
