What about a rMBA ??? That would sell well...

It would sell so well that the rMBP would hardly sell at all, because the rMBA would be cheaper if Apple goes with their current pricing and if they were the same price, I think most people would choose the MBA for the weight (many don't need or use the extra CPU power who want a 13" computer)

So you don't think it will eventually come out? They had the technology ready from the IPad, at least for a 11 inch rMBA. I see it comming later this year, but not at the same time they launch the 2nd gen rMBP; my guess is a September 2013 or Jan 2014 launch.

I think it eventually has to come, becuase Apple is moving every line to Retina. But I think that right now, it would be detrimental to rMBP sales, and I don't think Apple would want that. I think that a rMBA would need a significantly larger battery, which would require a thicker body or a change to an OLED screen.

probably not

I don't think we'll get thinner, this thing is really thin as it is, for WHAT it is. I can't see making the screen bezel and screen ANY thinner than it is, and the main chasis is less than .5 inch..one has to have SOME density in the batteries, than then enough chasis for support and rigidity. Could they make it a TAD lighter, probably and they could probably get a bit more battery density and of course a bit more power out of the cpu/gpu, but honestly I don't see a 15" inch unit getting more than .05-..08 inch thinner, but I'd rather not sacrifice any strength to do it.

I'd like to see them get rid of the 13 retina and have a retina MBA replace it.

You don't need to get rid of the 13 retina MBP. Despite all the complaints I see here about it being not good enough, it's a great computer. I've had multiple 13 MBAs and I like this computer much, much better.

Macbookpro upgrade

Does anyone have a clue as to when the next Macbookpro is due ?
Should I wait ? Or should I buy one now ?

Well I'm just hoping something fun is introduced at WWDC.

The problem is that the iPads are almost entirely filled with battery, with a tiny little logic board.

An rMBA has to back in a much bigger logic board, a heatsink and fan to cool it, more ports, and the keyboard, trackpad, and hinge.

I have a feeling that the shell of the computer will be identical from the outside.

The only way I can see it getting thinner in the future is if they make it a wedge shape like the MBA. The ports are simply too tall to make room for more space, unless Apple wants to get rid of USB which would be ridiculously stupid or if they get rid of that obvious bulge from the bottom and make it flag which is less pleasing to hold.

I think the only thing they can do is make it lighter at this point, but no design change should come for 3-5 years that is as huge as cMBP to rMBP.

Literally just read about Haswell before seeing your post. They better put a decent iGPU in their chips this time around, after being slanted so badly over the years. As well as wireless AC, really looking forward, good job I originally planned to get an rMBP for christmas this year then

I say you did a good job by holding out. It's been tough on me as well. I've been itching and my 2009 15" is driving me nuts. But the payoff is within reach.

I've heard that the current rMBP is already thermal constrained. Unless Apple invents a new way to cool the CPU or Intel produced a CPU that's radically more energy efficient, no.

And my wife says she is going to lose 30 pounds (again).

updating the innards and retooling all of Foxconn to make a different body are two different things. Guess which one is more difficult?

The iPad3 actually got thicker.

I'm expecting your disappointment. If the MBP's get any thinner they will topple over when you sneeze.

Isn't Foxconn just where they assemble the units? They get all the parts from different places.

Ipad2 got thinner
iPad5 going to be thinner and lighter.

Btw this is not going to be a disappointment for me, I love the mbpr as it is and would be fine if it stayed the same for years, it's just I'm holding off purchasing when an update is imminent.

Cheers

Definitely not in the next generation - remember the classic MacBook Pro chassis has not changed since 2009.

You've done well holding out too! I'm a bit torn between a 13" rMBP or a 15" uMBP... I want the matte screen of the 15"!!

I think weight is more important in this case than width is. IMO people would be wrapped at having a lighter laptop, rMBP is very impressively thin as it is.

I would rather Apple not sacrifice thermal cooling and thus PRO laptop performance to be thinner, it's a note book for christ sake, not a piece of paper nor tablet.

I would agree that 15" probably is but I doubt the 13" is. This has got to be the coolest running Apple laptop I've ever had (and I've had a lot).

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of Ethernet in the chassis. Having to use a thunderbolt/Ethernet dongle out purchasing a dock fit this ability is IMO a mistake.

The rMBP is an expensive laptop to begin with, and dongles are kludgy. The docks are nice, but a significant expense on top of the already expensive machine.

As nice as the display is, it is IMO, form over function.

Yes, I was talking about the 15" one. The 13" one is a really great and cool and they could probably almost put a dedicated GPU into it.

No, you are completely setting yourself up for disappointment. This is not an iPad.

Well there was a rumor that Apple is sourcing parts for a thinner design...

Also because the optical drive is gone and the un-upgradable nature of the device, updating is a lot easier now, so the device is kind of like the iPhone/ipad that is going for thinner/lighter/powerful because other manufactures are competing and racing to be the first.

I'm expecting a thinner design.

They did all that with last year's release. It will be several years before another redesign comes.

Easy decision for me. I've alway been a 15" man. Going 13" would be a step down. And when spending this kind of money you shouldn't go half way or you will eventually have regrets. It hurts, but go all the way and be happy for years to come. Within a year you will have forgotten the few hundred extra bucks. But that 13" toy will be staring you in the face. Besides, the 15" has bigger balls
