Are you saying your Toyota is over priced?

It has cost me FAR more to maintain my moms 70K mile Toyota Camry than my 117K mile Porsche. Your Mercedes must be a nightmare:p

having owned three porshces since 1990 I can hardly imagine that.. and that was using good local mechanics and not the dealer. Often I'd source parts myself and have the mechanic do the work but still, the toyotas were nowhere near the price for parts or labor. At least not in CA, maybe inland, but not CA.

the camry is an american car and one of the cheapest toyotas to repair, only the corolla is cheaper

I can guarantee you that your experience is not the average experience for a Toyota owner and Porsche owner...but that's pretty sweet if your Porsche isn't costing much money so far. As with all German luxury cars...it will, only a matter of time ;-)

I think the price of the SS watch is fine. The bands, not so much.. I was going to get a sport band, but by the time I was on the website, the ship dates had slipped, and I had to make a groggy, sleep-deprived decision and upgraded to the classic buckle.

I feel like is overpriced, first the cheapest option is 350? Plus tax that is 374 for me.
But that option is too small for me, so really the cheapest option for me with tax is 428.
Which I think I would not mind if it looked expensive, but to me, when looking at the Sport Version watches they look cheap. They look like 200 dollar watch, even there is a report Apple skimped hard on this watch, they have a huge markup, which I presume is because they know down the line, they will have to lower the prices, so they intentionally overprice them, so when they drop the price, they still have nice margin. Give them a couple months, probably before christmas, the prices will drop, but this was probably planned.

So if you want to have a watch that looks good, your probably have to cough up, around 700 plus tax.
I don't really have a watch, so don't tell me people buy luxury items at ridiculous prices.
Second I don't see the use for it, I basically hate most notifications on my phone. I have my phone on do not disturb on a lot. I started to realize my phone always was distracting me, and one day I started killing almost every notification.

The activity tracking to me seems silly too, if you are active, why do you need to be tracked. I go to the gym a lot, but I know I did exercise by looking at the mirror.
Only uses I can see this is for controlling my music, but even with that, my headphones have controllers.
I like experimenting with technology, but I feel I will wait till the price drops, second market, find on a sale to experiment with it, but right now, I really don't see why I need it.

I've owned many of each over the past 40 years. The Porsches have always cost less to maintain. Labor and parts costs are about the same. In all honesty the Toyotas have all needed more work. Every Toyota I've ever had needed a transmission too. Never put one in a Porsche. (California cars too)

Porsche has beat out Toyota on many reliability studies fwiw. Most people don't see this because the studies are usually broken down into "most reliable mid-sized sedan" etc. Not as complete manufactures.

I've found that if you buy a good, well depreciated Porsche it can actually save you money. They don't go down forever and often go back up in price. My Toyotas haven't done that.

Just because they release a new one doesn't mean you need to buy it.

Exactly. No matter when they release the next generation, the current watch will do everything it does right now and probably more with the next few software updates. It already does more than all those nice watches so to me it was a no brainer why this was a better value than those watches. Yes, I understand that the craftsmanship is generally higher and the monetary value holds up well but at the end of the day, they only tell time.

It's irrelevant. Apple has historically charged high prices, there's nothing new about the fact that Apple is highly skilled at extracting the most money from our wallets. :)

Lol true!

I agree with you on the price for the sport, but I wouldn't necessarily say they look cheap. Especially to the people who spent their hard earned cash on one, that's just cold. I know it's your opinion but have a little class!

Not sure what "class" has to do with it..it's his personal opinion.

It could be cheaper. I'd be even happier if it started at $299/$349 price points, though. Maybe next year.

It's important to remember that Apple sells its story, all this hype about changing the world ...blah, blah, blah.

They've never been interested in providing value to customers, especially since that would greatly reduce the large profit margins Apple collects.

Proof lies in all the bragging they do at keynotes WWDC and other events. That's what makes Apple the fat cash cow they are.

Based on the supply they have and the demand the watches are clearly underpriced.

Thats just to create an illusion its selling well when in reality, its not. Hence the decision to not comment on any sales after the first day or weekend and them combining it with other products that are not huge sellers like the iPod and Apple TV. Apples last new product was the iPad in 2010, they couldn't release sales figures fast enough. Announcing it sold over 300k units the first day of sales quickly. Zero word on Watch sales..Yes, its overpriced. Sport should have started at $199 with Watch at $349

The hardware bill of materials for my stainless steel Apple Watch is less than $100, while I paid over $700. That is a 7x markup for marketing, software and profit. Let's compare that to some other products:

  • iPad Air 16G BOM: $275, Price: $499 = 1.8X
  • iPhone 6 16G BOM: $200, Price: $650 = 3.25X
  • Casio Digital Watch BOM $5, Retail $20 = 4X
  • Seiko Stainless Solar watch BOM: $15, Retail: $100 = 6X
  • Longines Hydroquest Stainless steel watch: BOM: $50, Retail: $852 = 17X
  • Louis Vuitton bag: BOM: $100 Retail Price $1000 = 10X
  • Chanel No5 Perfume BOM: $10, Retail $140 = 14X
  • La Mer Moisturizing cream BOM: $4, Retail: $130 = 30X

Given that the AW is a luxury good, yet is a much more of technological marvel that any of the above, a 7X factor is not bad at all. I'd say its cheap.

Hogwash. The Watch is Apples least profitable product, with a range of only 20%. That´s according to Tim Cook during the last conference call. It´s not so hugely profitable as you seem to think. The "cost" analysis are always wrong according to Tim Cook as well. They don´t have a clue how much the hardware costs.

I think the sport model is a great value. The others, depends on how much you value the different looks.

Last summer I decided to increase my running from 5k's up to half marathons. I started looking at GPS running watches (I had been running with my phone for the 5 years since I took up running). But a decent GPS running watch starts about $250! I was thinking that I run 4-5 days a week so 6-7 hours per week tops. So $250+ for something I use 6-7 hours per week and the rest of the time it sits in my gym bag? Didn't made much sense to me.

And I loved the idea of changing music and volume with a watch as almost impossible to do with the phone strapped to your upper arm. And the idea of being able to se at least part of a text and who from while on a long run would be very nice (I have kids including one with a medical condition).

So even though I wanted something to help train for a couple long runs/races, I waited "patiently" for Apple Watch. I've had it a week and love it! Works well for a general fitness tracker (goodbye 3+ year old Nike Fuelband) a running watch (yes, wish it had GPS, but I'm use to running with my phone so not a deal breaker to me), and even non-run workouts (still finding the best settings). And of course love all the other, non-fitness stuff.

So yes, I thing a GREAT value compared to what I was looking at.

This is a massive load of BS! People don't care about Apple, they care about themselves. People buy products because they provide some benefit to them, period. If they didn't see the value in the benefit they wouldn't buy it!

I know we are far off topic here, but one of many data points.

IImage

reliability and COST to maintain are not the same thing. I can believe this for for 2014, since earlier those early Cayennes were pigs and broke down often and needed a ton of maintenance to keep running. too heavy, not enough suspension and brakes (although to porsches credit it really IS a volkswagen)

You are so far off base.

I've owned many Porsches, continually, since the 70s. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles of use.

In that group is a Cayenne Turbo with 120k on it. I've put $2500 in maintenance/repairs into the Cayenne TOTAL!

Parts are actually on par with all the Toyota parts I've had to buy. For example Turbo S control arms with bushings are only $150. Which is in the same price range as a Land Cruiser control arm.

There are many many many examples of 300k+ mile Cayenne Turbos out there now too! I'm a very active member of those forums and am VERY familiar with their issues.

I also personally know of several 700k mile plus 911/928/356, dozens of 300k+ mile 944/951/968

Cleary you speak from myths and not facts

No I don't think so. I think that the £299/ $349 that I paid for my sports watch is reasonable considering what it does.

The other watches are more expensive but the materials are higher quality and there are different bands. It makes sense to me.

I have lost 2.5 lbs in the last week by using the Fitness/Workout apps on my Apple Watch in conjunction with My Fitness Pal on my iPhone. I have tried losing weight several times before, but this feels like it's going to be the setup that FINALLY gets me to lose a significant amount. I have never stuck with an exercise regimen this many days in a row because I didn't have something like the Apple Watch to give me the incentives and encouragement to keep going.

That being the case, I would have paid double for my Apple Watch Sport. The fitness apps plus all the other cool things it can do are well worth the money.

Or you could save some money and go the the MFP site and get some encouragement from great people that are there.

Weight loss and fitness is all about individual motivation, not a piece of technology.
