I did put a screen protector on my iphone, as well as a metal casing. I noticed it has made me less particular about how I handle it. I have fewer qualms about touching the screen or holding my phone while in the toilet, with wet/sweaty/oily/greasy fingers, or generally just placing it on dirty surfaces.

It does have a small nick in the corner from when I went running and placed it in a pouch though.

However, I doubt my ipad is going to get knocked around as much. I am going to try it with just a smart cover first and see how the experience goes. :p

I use a Waterfield slip in sleeve with my iPad one.

I just ordered a new one for the new iPad this morning from sfbags.

No other protection although my kids broke the screen three times already on my one but I got it down to a 15 minute swap and keep a spare screen ready for the next break.

They are not going to be allowed to use the new iPad.

Do share the 15 minute How TO?
And where you got spare screens for how much? .. So some of us can learn to be as HANDY as you.

How can people not use anything?

I could not sit there while im watching a movie on it with it in my hands! Propping it up would be a pain too. Get a case thats a stand. The smart case is crap, hardily any angles to view it at.

I got a leather case that had a grill that you could prop it up at near any angle! Perfect!

I wasn't going to post but I thought I'd let others know who are still looking that I found a good deal for a Griffin iPad 1 sleeve on Amazon:

I was hoping to add a clear snap on case for the back, but if I do, it's not going to fit in the sleeve. It's already a tight fit.

This sleeve works great.

I use a Smart Cover and a sleeve from Pack & Smooch. Great combination IMO. Keeps it in great condition when carrying it from place to place and lets me use it as Apple intended.

I use it naked as well.
Always did with my first iPad 1 (never had the iPad 2).

At home I have a stand for it that resides near my computer for charging, etc.
It's the Griffin A-Frame stand and I love it.

When I travel, I put the new iPad into a sleeve and then into a backpack.

Sold my original iPad back to Amazon under their trade-in site and got full "like-new" price on it. So it works for me.

I used to be naked. Still am on the iphone, but that is easier to keep in my pants. I dropped the ipad 2 (slipped out of a sleeve) and dented the corner. The soft aluminum pushed in and pushed the screen up about 1mm so now I have to be very careful not to press to hard near the home button towards the bottom right corner. I am protecting this investment with a case.

I'd really like to use mine with no covers or anything, but I have 2 problems.

First, I find the bare device very slippery with my dry hands. Second, my iPad tends to fall down between the mattress and headboard when I fall asleep reading. I think that bounce off the metal frame for the box springs would be a bit much.

I had a Speck shell on the old iPad. I expect I'll do the same for this one.

Just the smart cover for me and a cushy travel zip up case.

my iPhone4 has a crystal clear front screen protector, you can't even tell it has a screen protector AND Mophie battery pack. Yeah it bulks it up, but I love the extra life and the phone feels less fragile.

Regarding my new iPad, I am always careful with it (within reason) so no big worry if it gets scratches on the back i don't care. The front will have the cover for when I am not using it.

I never understood people who cover their iPads/iPhones/etc up. I've always used mine naked. Sure I end up getting couple scratches here and there and sometimes I even drop it. But damn, it's nothing more than a toy and I'll most likely get a new one next year or at the latest, in 2 years. I swear some people treat it like it's more precious than a baby.
If you plan on selling it to upgrade next year, but want to use the device without babying it or keeping it in a bulky case, then a skin makes sense in my opinion.

Personally, I would be annoyed if there were a scratch on the display, but wouldn't be too concerned about the bezel or the back of the device.

Frankly, I quite like the idea of using a device until it "dies" or is no longer of any use, and have it build up a patina over time.

Something like this:

Unfortunately for me, I like to keep up-to-date with technology, and this early in the life of devices like the iPad, the year-on-year changes are pretty massive and have warranted an upgrade each time. Next year probably will too, as they'll hopefully put in a CPU & GPU capable of driving the retina display at speeds as quick or faster than the iPad 2.

My new iPad 3 came out of the box with a scratch on the back of it though, and I'm unsure about what I want to do with it. I don't have any dead/stuck pixels, dust under the screen, or severe backlight bleeding (I had to exchange my iPad 2 three times) so I don't really want to go through the hassles of exhanges to get a new one without any problems, and frankly I don't like the waste when doing that. It's going to hurt resale value though... :(

I didn't use any type of case on my iPad 2, and managed to avoid any marks, but I'm thinking about buying a sleeve for this one to make it easier to carry around. I rarely took the iPad 2 out as it was a WiFi model, so I would wrap a fleece or something around it in a backpack, but I went with the 4G model this time and think I'm probably more likely to take it out and want a proper case now.

Haven't decided what kind of sleeve I want to get yet though.
  • I like the look of this AMI case, but it has exposed metal zips, which eliminate it as a possibility. (also the price!)
  • These Selvedge Denim sleeves look pretty nice, but there's minimal padding there.
  • Some of the ColcaSac sleeves look nice (the monochromatic ones) and they're definitely well padded, but I'm not keen on Velcro...
  • I like that this Sena Leather Sleeve has a magnet in it (I'm surprised there aren't many more "smart" sleeves out there) but ironically, I think it ruins the look.
Any other sleeve suggestions? Personally I wouldn't want one made from synthetic materials. I feel like you can spend a bit more on a sleeve than any other type of iPad case, because the general dimensions are unlikely to change any time soon. Many people are still using sleeves purchased for their original iPad with the new one.

There's a few wool felt sleeves that I've seen which also look quite nice, but I haven't yet found one that makes the list. A lot of them are using snap fasteners which will put pressure on the device for example.

I got the slim sleeve and freestyle messenger bag from Timbuk2. They are pretty bitchin. The freestyle has a built in sleeve for an iPad.

For my day to day protection, I just picked up a very nice Targus case. Front magnetic smart cover, very nice fit, good looking back cover. Plus it has 2 very good viewing position stands. Also, fairly slim for this much protection. Love it. My local Best Buy had it for $39.

As a follow-up to a long-dead thread...

I tried going naked with my iPad 3. However, I managed to drop it when using it while watching TV, and unknown to me until several weeks later, put a shallow dent in the back when it bounced off the recliner handle on the way to the carpeted floor. OUCH.

When out and about, I've carried both iPads in an REI Boarding Bag, which is fairly well padded with sewn-in EVA foam. I purchased the updated version of that bag and thought I was good to go. Last week I bobbled the bag whilst trying to get my badge out to enter my building with a cast on my arm. Bag [containing iPad, Kindle, my entire elctronic life...] hit the concrete pad with a thud. A looksee later confirmed that despite all the padding and Cordura, the iPad sustained a cracked screen in the lower right-hand corner.

ARRRRGGGGH!

No Applecare or Squaretrade either.

It wasn't broken over the screen, I applied clear tape and could have continued to use it, but ended up taking it to my local Apple Store and ponied-up for a replacement for $299. They offered me AppleCare+ at the same time and I got that as well, which I didn't get when I ordered my iPad 3 as I didn't know they would cover AHD [accidental handling damage]. AppleCare+ became available at the same time as the iPad 3...

Long story, but I'm now looking for a slim case for the rear that will alow me to use my Smartcover, which I love. It appears that Apple has a Smartcase that includes the back case and ANOTHER Smartcover, when I already have TWO. I may have to go witrh someone else, but the essential thing is that it MUST:

1. Work with the Smartcover
2. Protect [reasonably] all four corners of my iPad

Suggestions? Joy Factory Smartsuit 3?

Is there anyone who's going to use the iPad naked with only a sleeve? No smart cover, no case, no stand, no screen protector, just using it naked with only a sleeve to protect it.

If there's anyone who's currently using this setup, do you wish you had a stand to prop your iPad up on when typing, or do you just hold the naked iPad in your hand?

Yep it's fine. The iPad sits nicely on a desk without a Smart Cover. The Smart Cover is good if you want to stand it up, other than that its extra bulk.

I've been using my iPad for two years with no case or sleeve or anything and it's fine. I don't see why people insist on babying their iPads, waste of money.

Agreed! Such a shame to see nicely designed hardware ruined by layers of plastic.
