Tell her you can put Windows on it, or be like Apple and tell her it "just works." That worked for millions of other sheep in the world.

I have bought everything I own with my own money. My xbox 360, my ipod touch, my tv, my psp and for all of these things my dad said that I need to save my money. Save it for what?! I saved for all those things. If he doesnt want me to buy anything over 100 dollars that has a screen then its going to be **** near impossible to make him let me spend $5000 on a fully pimped macbook pro. Yeah I know. My parents are screwed up. I mean really Im fifteen years old and I cant go past the stop sign at the end of the street! I do anyway though but they never find out.;)

No offense my man...BUT... You ARE a kid. You're not old enough to make final decisions. Only a kid would recite his age out of defense and from the looks of the toys you bought with your own money it's obvious you are kid with no financial responsibilities in terms of rent, food gas & electric, real stuff. ;)

Okay, your mom may not be telling the whole story, it's obvious she's misinformed but at the same time she may trying to talk you out of a Mac because of the cost. Dell makes everything look overly expensive because they make cheap junk but your mom may see that as a positive.

The easiest thing to do is to surf to Apple's website and have her look at the video called "The Anatomy of a Mac". She will see how easy it is.

I agree. The OP is a kid and has little perspective in terms of finances. I only wish you would've been the first person to reply to the thread to "nip it in the bud" instead of letting it become a legitimate thread.

Unfortunately, apple's increased popularity and "coolness" has tricked down into their age group, evidenced by the number of useless immature farting apps in the store, which can crowd out legitimate useful apps

So, yes, the OP is a kid and his rantings are immature,

BUT don't forget that it was a 13 year old who was the creator of the jailbreak for the iphones. so you win some and you lose some with these kids

what would a 15 y.o kid do with a 5K laptop...you running mathematical permutations on the thing? proteinomic structure analysis maybe? or rendering the next big indie flick?

be kind to your mother, she knows not what she is saying

My mom does not want me to buy a laptop from apple because she says its not as user friendly and you have to push a different button to do things. what is this??

This is your fault. You did not properly educate your mother. Introduce her to Vista- that should do it.

good luck!

Do your Mom's fingernails click really loud when she types? LOL :p

I suggest that you drag Mom & Dad down to the nearest Apple Store and make sure you sign them up for a Mac: "Getting Started Workshop" they usually have them on the weekends and make sure you get there early. Then have them go and check out the Mac that you've already picked out and you'll be "Good To Go!"

I buy a Mac just because it has Mac OS X on it. Yes, once you're with OS X you cannot go back. But hell, I really wanna go back. I want a laptop with a better GFX than 9600M GT.

dido except i dont wanna go back

once you get used to mac os you will never again use windows

Give me a break. Vista is a great operating system if your PC doesn't suck and you know what you're doing. First disable UAC and you're on your way. I use Vista on my gaming PC and audio production/engineering PC. NEVER had a single crash or issue and I've been using it since launch.

This is not true, I've been using both forever and still prefer Windows to this day. That's not to say I don't like OSX because I do, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but to each his/her own.

Dude... just shut you mouth you make yourself look so stupid in this post.. put his age past him hell he must be doing something worth while to get $5k for a laptop and you know what if he want's such a laptop why not? He worked for it somehow/someway. Who Care's what he's doing with the computer but him? Maybe he want's to watch like 100 hardcore porno video's on there, to each his own. Hell he's creating dam jobs by buying that computer he's pumping money into the economy. with that 5k he'll be supporting apple, nvidia, alu company's and everyone else who participates in the building of the computer. Maybe his parent's are trying to talk him out of it because when he's older he might want let's say a car or $ for college intuition which cost's an arm and a leg, but none the less that's all it was, a suggestion. Hell i'm 22 and I still go to my mom for big financial investment's does that mean that i'm not independent and well off on my own.. no it just mean's I like to hear someone else's perspective on the situation preferably someone I know i can trust. It's still MY money and a I earned it so I have the finally say. Period. EOS.

Amen Brother. Although I LOVE the OSX interface, i'm still not familar programming and such which I guess lower's my overall view on it. However very user friendly with a very thought out UI. I still had Vista Basher's though, it's not my fault there trying to install a new OS on a computer that originally shipped with windows 95 specs. But in the end all in all, all OS's Suck.

Tell your mom that you want Santa Claus to give you a new Macbook next christmas and then tell us what she tells you. Pretty please?

But in answer to your question, no, that's not the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That award goes to Paris Hilton when she found out about Walmart for the first time and exclaimed "do they make WALLS there?"

I might've gotten on board with the "he's just a kid" crowd but I noticed a quote he has in his signature and, for a 15 year old, kid, you're way ahead of the curve. Just be patient with mom, educate her, work out a responsible way for you both to get around the price tag of this laptop you want, and go for it. Stay away from the main stream media and refined sugar and enjoy the better side of life!

"Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."

oOoOoOo...watch mister 22 year old over here. calm down, fanboy, and air out your floral printed panties, i was yankin' the kid's chain.

@watermonkey: something about the quote catch your attention? i went to check it out anticipating Thoreau, Dickens or Hawthorne. it does make sense, though and reflects a truth all too real these days when urban slang has replaced proper grammar and conscious cultivation of a rich vocabulary. good quote. dunno the kid but if he is beyond the curve, you'd think he'd give his mom the benefit of the doubt to learn more about computers before raining on her parade.

Take her the Apple store and show her which comp you want and let her play around with it. When she sees how sexy Apple computers are she'll want one for herself

It's not dumb at all. My mother doesn't know anything about computer, but she still insists Macs are silly and stuff. Doesn't make her dumb in any way. Mocking your own parents will only make people look down on you.

Of course I gave her a Mac and taught her the gist of it, and now she's pretty content.

The question that comes to mind is why does a 15 year old kid need a pimped out $5000 MBP? Especially a kid that can't leave the block without permission! Why not a Macbook and put the rest in savings?

As for what the mom says; parents usually say silly things... but underlying, there is often a profound wisdom that comes from personal experience.

Instead of getting mad and bashing other people's computer choice, just say the following:

"Mac's are primarily designed for creative people. That's probably why you chose a different computer."

or my favorite

"I would explain the difference but you probably wouldn't understand."

it happens. as an ardent user of both pC and mac platforms i wouldn't mind them. just say,"now, now children...just because you can't understand the effective of these machines...much less operate one to play Pong...that doesn't mean they are toys. now, run along with your bongs, go back to your frathouses and down a gallon of gasoline to rest your thoughts. don't forget to have a nice soothing smoke afterwards. i know you are all a little technologically slow but there are some of us who actually know how to use these contraptions so everything is quite alright, but thank you for sharing your uninformed, superficial and pointless concerns. here is a nice coloring book for you and some crayons. remember to eat your vegetables and don't eat paper and glue!"

So wait, you think I would be better off if I stopped teaching all of my students piano and got one of these "real jobs" my friends have that pay minimum wage and are boring as hell? No thanks I think I'll stick with my $20,000 annual salary and buy whatever the hell stuff I want.

ok...if you are making 20K as a 15 y.o why are you posting complaints about your mom when, obviously, you have no problem buying the thing in the first place and you seem to have control over your finances? were you looking for some sort of affirmation from faceless strangers? it seems that your concerns don't seem to have a valid obstacle between what you say you want and having the resources to buy what you want/need so i find no reason why you are raising an attitude when you could have bought the thing in the first place.

interesting that you say you earn 20K at 15 considering the legal working age in the US is 16. even if you teach piano, IRS tax filing status still requires you to be of age to work given that you are earning a substantial amount of income. i teach guitar and drums and have done so for 12 years so I know the books on this one. a quick search of older threads you've took part in suggests that you are in the US and thus subject to standard US labor laws and tax filing requirements. besides, i never suggested that you give up however you earn your money because i neither care nor inquired about it.

whatever the case, get your money, buy your laptop - however much it'll cost you - and enjoy. parents will say weird things from time to time, this is natural, give your mom a break...a lot has changed since computers became mainstream items and it was virtually unheard of to have a home computer in the 60s and 70s so teach her to be up with the times and lay off the hate-o-reade. your mom carried your @ss for 9 mos, the least you could do in return is teach her about a mac for chrissakes.

I did that but.... I went back to XP which is way better, faster, and runs my drivers. Maybe I will give Windows 7 (a.k.a. "Windows done right", Steve Ballmer).
