So true. Many don't even know Macs can right click or run Windows. Some say Macs are slow when they last used them a few years back (back when ALL computer were slow). Even my parents who don't know a thing about computers somehow have the notion that Macs are bad

macs can right click but wth is with the single button mice? i use a 2 button mouse but you'd think apple would be smart enough to toss that idea years ago for user convenience yet it lingers...like a bad fart.

Should this post be in blue?

Or are you quoting someone?

blue? you mean, single button mice as far as ergonomics go makes sense? tell me you are joking. i am suggesting that the concept of having a single button mouse as far as convenience and productivity goes does not makes sense if you do not have a 2 button mouse on hand. clicking my track pad button and the squiggly thing button is not as easy as having the right click button built next to the left click button on the trackpad.

My 85yo dad had been user the computer club's PC's and Macs for ~3 years, gradually teaching himself email and Word. Prior to that he had never used a computer in any way. When he asked me what to buy to have at his home, I suggested a Macbook even though all his friends and collegues used PC's, simply because Macs were safer and I knew I could help by phone. He quickly learned the 'Apple way' of doing things, to the point where he was using iTunes to burn compilation CDs of Big Band-era songs for his retirement community friends.

For computer novices of ANY age, I would only recommend getting a mac.

My first experience with a mac was 12 years ago and I hated it. Last year I bought a mac and what a difference. :) A tour of a store and a good play with a mac will change her mind. I used to hate macs too. Most people are afraid of the unknown. I was :) Best of luck :)

Just do as everyone says, take her to the store. If that dosent change her mind tell her you hate her, and shes the worst mom in the world.

I have personal experience with this. The 70+ crowd does not do well with change. If she switches, be prepared for endless hours of troubleshooting.

I have a client in the golden years who literally breaks down in tears whenever something different pops up on the screen. I rue the day I recommended her to go Mac. Although her upgrade path was from a late 80s DOS monster w/ a dot-matrix printer (for endless birthday banners), it's the resistance to change that makes it a deal breaker. You might fare better since your mom understands ICONS and Mouse usage. But ask yourself: Does she relish learning new things? Does change excite or upset her?

May I ask, as I should have done in the first place; is this mac for you or your mother? :)

no. no. i am talking about the onboard mouse on the laptop itself prior to the two button finger gesture and the touch sensitive features on the new mighty mouse. i always had the problem with the ibook and wondered why they just never built a second button in. it would have been more user friendly to include a second mouse button to enable right click instead of having to reach for that darned squiggly button thing. even with the mbp, i would have liked the second right click as a hardware button instead of the two finger thingamajig. I like the tactile sensation, i guess.

odd. my 86 yo granny is down with the l337speak. seriously. when she started emailing and surfing stuff on the net regularly, she was quite open to learning on a mac or a pc..maybe most old folks aren't this way.

kinda reminds me of those kids that have a wii they never play, they think its the best thing ever and somehow have the notion that xbox is bad or something like that actually, ive never met a family that owned both a wii and a mac. hmmm

Well alot of people might have never used an apple before, there for, they are scared. Take her to the apple store, set up a guided shopping tour, and have fun for an hour or two. Thats how I got my sister to buy one after she thought it would be too difficult to get one after using windows forever. Now she says she will never go back.

UGH OMG U DO NOT NO HOW MUCH OF A GOD DAMN HASSLE IT IS TO USE COMMAND V INSTEAD OF CONTROL V TO PASTE STUFF. ARGH.

my mom said the same thing about the iphone. she was addicted to the crackberry until she had 2 days with the iphone. now she has pity for the dumb 20 something year old women who think blackberry messenger is the only reason to live. she feels liberated and thanks me daily...consider getting your mom to switch as your first opportunity for her to 'owe you one'.

I have bought everything I own with my own money. My xbox 360, my ipod touch, my tv, my psp and for all of these things my dad said that I need to save my money. Save it for what?! I saved for all those things. If he doesnt want me to buy anything over 100 dollars that has a screen then its going to be **** near impossible to make him let me spend $5000 on a fully pimped macbook pro. Yeah I know. My parents are screwed up. I mean really Im fifteen years old and I cant go past the stop sign at the end of the street! I do anyway though but they never find out.;)

you deal drugs?

I can't imagine any other way

Just spend on the macbook and get it if u really want it OP.

I had a similar situation last month where my mom advised me against the macbook. I ended up spending my own money towards it and haven't looked back since.

Well, an iphone would suit a house wife well. Since its basically a ipod play toy with a phone attached.

"…and you have to push a different button to do things…"

Did your mom stop using the telephone when they went from rotary to push-button?

Did your mom stop watching TV when they went from physical dial controls to remote controlled?

Now, in that quote, I guess your mom's technically correct. But, who cares? And what are you, a mama's boy?

On the other hand…

Listen to your mom and save your damn money, there's a recession afoot.

:D

don't forget digital microwaves and electric kettles ;) :D:D
