Is this the dumbest thing youve ever heard or what?

I did that but.... I went back to XP which is way better, faster, and runs my drivers. Maybe I will give Windows 7 (a.k.a. "Windows done right", Steve Ballmer).

Funny thing.

Windows 7 is just a marketing - release of Vista. MS wants to get rid of the name Vista, as noone can hear it any more.
But that´s it, under the hood, Windows 7 is Vista SP2 with a changed GUI.

Really funny, the same people blaming Vista are praising Win 7 - although it´s pretty much the same thing?

Hi.la.rious!. As a parent, if my 15 year old asked me for a $5K computer, I will figure he/she will ask for a $50K car when they reach 18!. So the lecture begins how money is made and how learning should be achieved ...

Heck, if my kid showed me what Jonathan Wendel did and proved it, I would be amazed!. Guys, Jonathan Fitality Wendel. Professional gamer extraordinaire.:D

You didn't quite read through the whole thread before posting did you? He's not asking his parents to pay for the $5K computer, he's going to be paying for it with money he earned.

I never thought I'd read this...someone with the marketing experience and common sense to see that Windows 7 is all marketing hype and just Vista SP2. Thanks :) (no sarcasm btw). You'd be amazed (or maybe not) to read how many people really believe W-7 is some great new OS. Every damn OS they've ever released was touted as being faster, better, easier to use. Wake up the rest of you!

ok...if you are making 20K as a 15 y.o why are you posting complaints about your mom when, obviously, you have no problem buying the thing in the first place and you seem to have control over your finances? were you looking for some sort of affirmation from faceless strangers? it seems that your concerns don't seem to have a valid obstacle between what you say you want and having the resources to buy what you want/need so i find no reason why you are raising an attitude when you could have bought the thing in the first place.

interesting that you say you earn 20K at 15 considering the legal working age in the US is 16. even if you teach piano, IRS tax filing status still requires you to be of age to work given that you are earning a substantial amount of income. i teach guitar and drums and have done so for 12 years so I know the books on this one. a quick search of older threads you've took part in suggests that you are in the US and thus subject to standard US labor laws and tax filing requirements. besides, i never suggested that you give up however you earn your money because i neither care nor inquired about it.

whatever the case, get your money, buy your laptop - however much it'll cost you - and enjoy. parents will say weird things from time to time, this is natural, give your mom a break...a lot has changed since computers became mainstream items and it was virtually unheard of to have a home computer in the 60s and 70s so teach her to be up with the times and lay off the hate-o-reade. your mom carried your @ss for 9 mos, the least you could do in return is teach her about a mac for chrissakes.

what are you smoking? ever heard of a work permit? The legal working age in the us is 12 but only if its farming. Ages 14 and 15 need a work permit and have a lot of restrictions on what they can do. Such as they cant operate heavy machinery, work with explosives or drive. 16 and 17 do not need a work permit but they still have a few restrictions. and at 18 you can do pretty much anything. Man this thread has gotten way off topic.

Hope your mom doesnt watch the new microsoft commercials with that red hair chick that buys a computer under $1000 and that mom and kid tag team buying a computer for gaming.

Give me a break. Vista is a great operating system if your PC doesn't suck and you know what you're doing. First disable UAC and you're on your way. I use Vista on my gaming PC and audio production/engineering PC. NEVER had a single crash or issue and I've been using it since launch.

This is not true, I've been using both forever and still prefer Windows to this day. That's not to say I don't like OSX because I do, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but to each his/her own.

If Vista is a great operating system, why do most people still stick with XP?

Also if you look closely Dell is charging $150 more to add xp than getting vista (included) price.

My brothers a die hard PC fan (sager's mostly) and he's even disgusted by Vista. He still uses xp to this day.

Your mom shouldn't be telling you what to buy unless she's buying it. If she's buying it for you than we have a whole 'nother problem on your hands ;)

just kidding

yeah if she's buying it for you then i don't think you have anything to complain about. spending 1,000$+ on you isn't something to be upset about.

bring her to the store. if she doesn't think they are awesome. then save up yourself - the best feeling in the world is paying for things yourself, and buying a MacBook will definitely teach you that hard work pays off

Get off the Apple cool-aid. Did you even try both? W7 _IS_ faster, even as a beta and with debug code enabled.

Oh-ho! Not even in your dreams. Sorry, but no way! Microsoft had to start over the whole Longhorn development after several years, and they needed about 3 years to build Vista, based on 2003 Server code, and we all know how crappy the product ended up - do you really believe, they´ve suddenly, absolutely miraculously been able to build a whole new OS within less than a year? C´m on, you´re kidding?

I've got Vista and 7 Beta running dual boot on the same PC. Yes obviously 7 is an evolution of the Vista coding, but seriously cutting out a lot of fat. Vista takes about 2 minutes to full log in after entering my password, 7 beta takes about 5-10 seconds. Performance wise there is a huge improvement that I don't reckon a service pack would have done.

I'm looking forward to 7 final as long as they don't screw it up, as it will offer a marked improvement going on what I've seen so far. Can't go the XP route as when my RAM, VRAM etc are tallied up, 32bit Windows won't be able to use it all, and XP 64 is a non starter as the driver support is shocking.

Tell your mom that you want Santa Claus to give you a new Macbook next christmas and then tell us what she tells you. Pretty please?

But in answer to your question, no, that's not the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That award goes to Paris Hilton when she found out about Walmart for the first time and exclaimed "do they make WALLS there?"

Omg you cant be serious lol

My mom does not want me to buy a laptop from apple because she says its not as user friendly and you have to push a different button to do things. what is this??

She's being a typical mom. :D

Well, in all seriousness, some folks get set in their ways to the point where having to remember Command + C instead of Control + C is a huge annoyance. But to put it into perspective, what if it were the other way around and everyone used Macs? Underdog Windows with its right-clicking, the Start menu and its position on the bottom of the desktop would also seem really odd and backwards. Most people like familiarity.

That being said, I don't think different keystrokes are the real reason for your mom's dislike of Macs...I think she just has an eye disorder. She can't see you spending several thousand dollars on a computer! :D :D :D

your mum is pretty right on the "you dont have to press another button" issue though.
since you don't have to press the power button to turn on the typewriter.

"…and you have to push a different button to do things…"

Did your mom stop watching TV when they went from physical dial controls to remote controlled?

:D

TVs had physical dials???

ha-ha

Seriously - I've only seen those in my young life while my grandparents were throwing them out ... and they were old as dirt even then. (The TV -- not my grandparents.)

All kidding aside, Apples User Interface guidelines is made of the kind of stuff they teach in Human Computer Interaction classes. Seriously, that was our textbook!

They might do it a bit differently, but those differences are to make things simpler.

I don't see too many classes pointing to Vista and saying, "this is good design and what we should emulate."

Nice job on getting a MP!

Show her the computer and get it into her hands. Who knows? She might actually like it a bit.

If it is your money then she can pound sand for the most part. If it is her money you can pound sand. Is this the "dumbest thing [I've] ever heard"? No.

Definitely take her to the store.

I think for the most part the reason why most people are so defensive of Windows is because Macs weren't always as they are now. OS X is pretty much what puts Macs and Windows based computers at a competetive level. Everything before that was ehhh. Unfortunately, most people who don't try out OS X are basing their arguments off pre-OSX.

So true. Many don't even know Macs can right click or run Windows. Some say Macs are slow when they last used them a few years back (back when ALL computer were slow). Even my parents who don't know a thing about computers somehow have the notion that Macs are bad
