I have had one with a dead pixel and another with a yellow tint. Never returned an Apple product before and have returned the new iPad twice. I am happy now though. Can start enjoying my iPad.

And as I pointed out before, the question isn't whether those things are acceptable or not, the question is whether or not they were truly there or only perceived in the mind of someone being OCD. People need to stop pretending that OCD isn't a real issue or doesn't exist. It does, and no company should have to live up to the impossible standard of anyone who would perceive most minor, trivial, imperceptible imperfection as a significant flaw.

I don't understand. If someone sees a problem with their display we need to assume it's OCD? OCD is real and so are dead pixels and light bleed and a host of other issues that are backed up with tons of pictures on this site. You have every right to except a faulty display and to be happy with it.

Maybe the op just had bad luck? I think some people are being a bit harsh on him...

With the large volume of iPads produced some are bound to be duds or have faults.

As I have discovered in the past, sometimes Apples quality control isn't that great...

I am on my 7th Iphone , and last time i went to the same store the manager refuses to replace with the same reason. told me a bunch of bs, i ended up filing a complaint.

I've been lucky with iPhones. I've owned every version without any issues.

1st. Had a dead pixel
{snip}
Am I being picky or should I expect 100%

Maybe it's just me, but I would call 99.9999682109% pretty much 100%.

Edit - mine has one dead pixel. About an inch from one long side. It's really only noticable when i run a dead-pixel test. Watching a movie, reading the web or whatever, it's no more noticable than any dust on the glass. I am not taking it back. (for the record, two iPod Touch, two iPhones and two iPads purchased over the years, one dead pixel. I've been a lucky man.

I have a feeling there is more to this story then your telling. The possibility of that many defective iPads is very unlikely.

It happens. I had to return my iPhone4 twice and I had to return my 27" iMac (and will have to do so again).
My iPhone 4S and both my iPads (1st and 3rd gen.) are all ok.

It might sound unlikely, but sometimes it's very much possible to be unlucky and have to return a single device multiple times before it's ok.
Apparently, sometimes whole batches are faulty. It's not the customer's fault.

At these price tags, I'd definitely not tolerate any color tint or dead pixels or whatever lowers the resale value in any way.

Plus, at least a part of the appeal of Apple products is their perfection.
It's what makes us love these things so much.
I don't care if my car has dents and rusty spots. It's a FIAT. If it was a Mercedes or a Ferrari, I'd think differently about that.

My new iPad is perfect. It has no dead pixels, it doesn't get warm, there's no light bleed and there's no tint (its color temperature is slightly warmer than on my iPad1, but that's only noticeable in direct comparison).
If it wasn't, I'd certainly return it.

They would never have opened another iPad if they couldn't see the defect themselves, the defects may have been small but they were there.... I don't see apple advertising there products with a quote "may contain small defects" ?????

I would have kicked you out of my store if I were the manager. Some customers aren't worth the trouble...such as yourself. Losing your business would be better than keeping it at your cost.

Good business practice there.

Thanks for all the replies... To be honest i could have lived with the dead pixel but there's something that sits there in the back of my mind that says if I take it back I will get a new one that may be perfect... if they had a policy where 2 dead pixels or less is acceptable then I wouldn't be bothered... When I took my fist iPad back they had no problem swapping it and agreed with me that it should be perfect for the price I'm paying, then after I opened 5 iPads they started changing there tune saying that there all not going to be perfect....

Return all the iPads you want. That's your prerogative as a consumer.

As for me, I'll just patiently await their appearance on refurb and pick myself up a "near-perfect" iPad at a discount.

Do you see a point in time when your need/desire for an iPad will outweigh your need for a "perfect" one?

I think Apple really needs to implement a tougher return policy based on dead/stuck pixels. Most other companies allow certain number per screen size that is acceptable unless it's in the middle of the screen. These OCD behaviors just raise the cost for rest of us.

When the first IBM Thinkpads came out 20 years ago, IBM's policy was that you could exchange your Thinkpad or get a replacement screen if there were more than 5 dead pixels. They also had a policy whereby you could return your Thinkpad within 30 days of purchase for any reason, no questions asked. I'm sure more than a few people used that second policy to get around the first one.

A year later after the manufacturing technology improved, IBM offered a screen replacement if there was even a single bad pixel.

I think Lenovo's current policy is free exchange if more 3 or more dead pixels.

In all seriousness, how did you find a dead pixel by quickly looking at iPads in an Apple Store? I once did a dead pixel test on a 1080p 65" plasma and I had to get within one foot of the screen to even make out the individual pixels well enough to see whether any were dead or not. Given the pixel density of the iPad, I simply don't know how you could find a dead pixel without a dark room, a magnifying glass, and a LOT of patience.

Until you're replaced by someone who does.

3 years experience in Apple Retail says I wouldn't be. I've seen some insane things, and I've seen managers stand up to customers who are insane and unreasonable as the OP is, customers who go above and beyond the call of crazy, those managers are the ones who last. Thanks for playing though.

Perhaps you will want to Help those having Tint issues

My screen has. Small defect under the glass or inside the glass. I am debating taking it back in but I don't know. It's not that huge of a deal and I know that things are bound to happen to the case or screen during the time I own it. I undrstand where the OP is coming from though. It is frustrating to have spent a good sum of money on a product and have its major feature have a flaw, even if small.

Yeah, I almost did a dead pixel test with background colors, but decided against it. Haven't noticed any problems.

That is always the best thing to do. Once you see it all of your focus will be on it.

Lol you worked as a apple retail cashier for three years and you think you know how to run a business. Trust me. An attitude of not caring about the customer isnt apple.

To the op, no you're not crazy. I think the manager did the right thing in advising you to wait out this batch.

First off, that manager is awesome and I hope there's more of him at all retail stores. Can't have enough of good managers such as these.

YOU ARE NOT BEING TOO FUSSY. It seems a few people think spending 800 bucks and getting a dead pixel is normal??? ...no guys.... BTW how are you testing these so fast in Apple's insanely bright stores?

as for getting 5 lemons in a row, I wish the best of luck to you. Friend got an iPad 2 and we got a black background to look for any screen issues. Totally fine. Took all of 30 seconds, probably less. That's what I expected and I don't think that's asking too much. Another friend needs to exchange hers as there's a bit of bleeding in two corners. Unlucky, I guess. Maybe give it a bit or order an iPad from another area??
