I've noticed that Bestbuy and Futureshop in Canada have a sale on the MacBook Pro, a discount from 2199 to 1999. It ends on the 14th, Thursday. To me it makes perfect sense that they are selling their last MBPs and after this they will be bringing in new MBPs at the same, or a different price. Having a sale gives them the chance to get rid of stock and then change their price after the sale ends, whether it be for the old, or new model.
They also have price drops on their Macbooks. This could mean that Apple is also planning on updating the Macbook at the same time, or perhaps Futureshop is just having a sale on mac products, and this is not related to an update at all.
No, as I said - this price is below the cost that Apple sells them to Best Buy/Future Shop (Canada) for. Which is the result of an exchange rate fluctuation, I admit - but interesting.
Plainly, they're preparing for a new one - especially because if there are the U.S. price cuts I suspect, then the Canadian price cuts are going to be even larger.
The lower-end model in Canada might go from an MSRP of $2199 to $1899 or something like that. In that case, it's no wonder that Future Shop would be eager to push them out the door.
Future Shop rarely puts Apple products heavily on sale. A below cost sale is pretty much unheard of. Believe me - I shop there a lot.
Personally, I can't wait - not so much for the new model, but because hopefully a price cut will bring a cut in the price of the older models, not only because they're last-generation but because the price of the new ones will be adjusted to deal with the exchange-rate difference.
For example, if Apple sells the refurb 2.2's at the same price, once the new ones hit the channl, as the old 2.16 Core 2's, then we're looking at a price in the $1499 range. But, if prices have been cut, then we're looking even lower.
The problem, I suppose, is that if they drop the prices that much they're going to bump up against the BlackBooks.
