This guy knows what he's talking about. The rest of you all keep saying how Macbook Pro's are coming soon, and yet your putting negative thoughts on it right now such as "It won't come tomorrow"....... dudes, leapord update just released, and I checked store stock at Apple Store in YORKDALE mall today and they were all out, same goes for Futureshop/Bestbuy.

hopefully, i been waiting, it's going to be my first mac purchase.

I went to my local best buy 2 hours ago and they still have a ton of the 15" MBPs in stock but not one 17" model. They also had one MBA and a ton of macbooks.

I know it probably doesn't mean anything that their stock of MBPs is still high because best buy is one of the last places to get updated with the new models (they took forever with the updated macbooks) but I thought you all might like to know as this may be one indication AGAINST an update being tomorrow.

However, as in my signature, I obviously hope they come out...

Could they not have a special build of 10.5.1, like was done with the MBA, and not 'need' 10.5.2?

They could, but I don't think they have done that before (with the exception of the Air). And the Air uses the same old Merom CPU, just shrunk, whereas Penryn is a new beast (not all that different, granted, but maybe enough to warrant some kernel differences between 10.5.1 and 10.5.2, like SSE4 support).

Understand something though. I used to work at best buy and they usually start this process weeks in advance. The reason is some stores and distro centers have larger stock than others so while one store may have nothing, others may still have dozens with more on the way. It IS an obvious drawdown of stock though if this info is true. I wonder if the best buy price tags have a small lone C on them near a corner (usually lower right if I recall). Thats a visual that lets employees know the item is closeout without tipping off the customer. The new SKUs are another flag but pay no attention to the date till apple announces something. They are just placeholders as Best Buy knows less than an apple store employee. All best buy knows is that they can no longer order new current model macbook pros and have prepped the inventory system for a new model as one would expect.

PS: For the uninitiated Best Buy owns Futureshop so their processes are the same. They were migrated to the best buy system many moon ago though the price tag thing may be a bit different.

You know, I could see 10.5.2 absolutely having to be on the updated MPB's before they came out if it was something you had to pay for, to relieve that burden on the buyer (I spent $2k+ on this thing and I have to pay $20 to upgrade it the minute I get it out of the box?). So what? You release a new MBP and people have to spend 45 minutes updating, if they even want to right away. I don't think it not having 10.5.1 is a big deal. A lot of people ask, "Well, why would you do that?" Ok, but why wouldn't you? Stop an entire product update from launching because it doesn't have one revision of an operating system that'll have at least 9-10 revisions in it's lifetime? You're going to have to update something eventually, so I don't see why it'd absolutely have to be on the new MBP's for them to come out, unless the updated processor wouldn't work with the then current version of 10.5.1. Is there any proof of that or just speculation? I mean, who's to say they didn't engineer 10.5.1 to work with the new processors to begin with?

Furthermore, with everyone putting so much stock in 10.5.2, and hoping that they installed the current build the minute it was released to developers (for a release of tomorrow with 10.5.2 installed), that's assuming that when they released it they were confident enough in it to install it on the new MBP's without feedback from the developers. Why would they release it to just developers if they were confident enough in it to install on a batch of new machines? Just to get a headstart on the bugs?

It might very well work that way and I'm just blowing smoke, I have no idea. I'm hoping it is released tomorrow, as I'm sitting on my hands patiently waiting to upgrade my Powerbook G4, 1.67 to a new MacBook Pro, and the minute I just say screw it and buy a current one is the day before they release the new ones. We'll see.

I'd say the likelihood of the new MBP being released tomorrow is pretty darn high:

1) For the past several weeks, various stores have been slowly depleting their supply of MBP's (The first report came in a few weeks ago, and now we're hearing about Best Buy and Futureshop).

2) The beta builds of 10.5.2 had the "MacbookPro 4,1" references in it's code, and the general theory was that those new mystery MBP's would be released shortly after the introduction of 10.5.2. Well, that update came along today (Monday) and Apple typically updates their products on Tuesdays, so it makes sense for the new MBP's to be released the day after 10.5.2.

3) Penryn procs are finally being incorporated into more and more major vendor's computers (Sony, Dell, HP, Toshiba). There had been an initial shortage (probably why Apple didn't release the new MBP's earlier), but that shortage has pretty much passed. Bring on the Penryn MBP's!

That's my take on it :p

Yeah, I predict Apple will release a 17" MBP with R/W Blue Ray, dual hdds, 1920x1200 LED panel and 512MB Dual 8700M GT, for a mere $4799 (sorry, no other configurations available, no 15" model for the foreseeable future). Bet that will make a lot of folks happy! :D

I've noticed that Bestbuy and Futureshop in Canada have a sale on the MacBook Pro, a discount from 2199 to 1999. It ends on the 14th, Thursday. To me it makes perfect sense that they are selling their last MBPs and after this they will be bringing in new MBPs at the same, or a different price. Having a sale gives them the chance to get rid of stock and then change their price after the sale ends, whether it be for the old, or new model.

They also have price drops on their Macbooks. This could mean that Apple is also planning on updating the Macbook at the same time, or perhaps Futureshop is just having a sale on mac products, and this is not related to an update at all.

No, as I said - this price is below the cost that Apple sells them to Best Buy/Future Shop (Canada) for. Which is the result of an exchange rate fluctuation, I admit - but interesting.

Plainly, they're preparing for a new one - especially because if there are the U.S. price cuts I suspect, then the Canadian price cuts are going to be even larger.

The lower-end model in Canada might go from an MSRP of $2199 to $1899 or something like that. In that case, it's no wonder that Future Shop would be eager to push them out the door.

Future Shop rarely puts Apple products heavily on sale. A below cost sale is pretty much unheard of. Believe me - I shop there a lot.

Personally, I can't wait - not so much for the new model, but because hopefully a price cut will bring a cut in the price of the older models, not only because they're last-generation but because the price of the new ones will be adjusted to deal with the exchange-rate difference.

For example, if Apple sells the refurb 2.2's at the same price, once the new ones hit the channl, as the old 2.16 Core 2's, then we're looking at a price in the $1499 range. But, if prices have been cut, then we're looking even lower.

The problem, I suppose, is that if they drop the prices that much they're going to bump up against the BlackBooks.

Hey all first time poster!
I've been reading these forums for at least the last year and a half and finally decided to register.

Anyway I was wondering if they release the MBP tomorrow will there potentially be options at the store or do the stores only carry the base version of the 3 models? What I'm getting at is I'd want the middle of the road 15.4" MBP but with the 200GB 7200 HD and would like to have to before I go out of town this weekend.

Thoughts?

no i don't think so. i may be wrong, but most of the time at the stores they have just base models. they will have a base 15" and the 17". if you want to do any customization your best bet is to do it online

really? that would be great! i can't wait to pick one of these bad boys up. thats stock 4gb of ram right? ;)

this thread is absolutely hilarious. remember not to sob over your current computer when this all turns out to be more false alarms, as apple might not repair your machine due to water damage.

also, that mockup - is it about 2 feet deep? because those usb/firewire/dvi ports look really really small.

So um yeah it's Tuesday, and, like, there's nothing there. Tune in for another episode of Conclusive Evidence of a Macbook Pro Update™ next Monday night! Same time, same place guys!
