MacBook Pros are not silent, this is all totally subjective. My iPhone is 'silent'. Something with fans and a HDD cannot be 'silent'!

They all have a constant fan sound when you turn it on, relatively quiet, but in a silent/quiet room, its very audible. Although, my new 2.5 Penryn is a bit noisier than my 2.2 Merom, but not much.

Any CPU whine or high pitched humming? do the fans vibrate when at high speed?

these were problems from a few previous models... but since this is a new system maybe there are some new issues like this?

I dont think the fans are a problem on the MBP when they are working well... they are very quiet and the noise doesnt get to me at all...

First, a quick hello. New MBP owner, newly registered here on the forums, first post.

My new 17" MBP is remarkably quiet, so much so that I was wondering if it was defective (it's not). It really is a tremendous piece of engineering. My new MBP experience has been extremely pleasant.

People reading this thread - remember that "silent" is subjective, as I found out myself.

Silent means that you can't hear A SOUND from the machine, in an equally silent/quiet room.

I have had 3 recent MBPs now, and all have the same sound - a low-speed fan sound constantly. This makes it by no means "silent", although it is FAIRLY quiet. It may be thought to be "silent" compared to a Mac Pro or a PowerMac.

As I keep saying - an iPhone is just about "silent". A MacBook Pro, with fans, harddrives etc., is not.

i think that's a common complaint with the penryn.
i hve 2.2 and when i compared it with the base model penryn from my buddy.
mine appears to be quiter.. although both of them are "silent" if we compare them to pc laptops

I've always found that how noisy a computer is will be inversely proportional to how bad the owners hearing is. :)

Good hearing = noisy computer
Bad hearing = OMG my computer is silent

Actually I have excellent hearing, and my MBP is virtually silent.

+1

Realistically, if the fans are at their lowest setting (2000rpm), the sound is very low, and you shouldn't notice it unless you are specifically looking for it. Anything else in the room making any sound whatsoever (including typing on the keyboard or hitting the trackpad button) is going to be *significantly* louder than the fans. The only time I really hear audible sound coming from the machine is when I'm using the dvd drive or doing something processor/graphics intensive and the fans kick in to 4000rpm (audible) or 6000rpm (machine is loud!).

Show me your cert from your last hearing test which says you have brilliant hearing and i'll believe you :)

Although yes i know the MBP is virtually silent (except for some whining :) ), I had one before. Apple are very good at making quiet computers. I'm mainly complaining about people in general who are deaf :). Not at you :)

I think we have to agree that the MBPs are NOT silent if we accept silent as meaning the complete absence of any noise. When the question was first raised here, I maintained that I could not hear anything from my MBP, except when I put my ear to it. While the noise is not audible to me when I'm working on the computer, the computer itself is obviously not silent. My ability to hear it has nothing to do with whether or not it's silent, just like some people can't see the yellowing on their screens where I can because my eyes are sensitive to nuances of color and light.

So, the final verdict is that the MBP is not silent. It makes noise and compared to absolute silence (as opposed to what we'd call silence here in Brooklyn), it makes quite a bit of noise. Compared to virtually all other non-mac laptops I've used, however, it makes almost no noise. But that doesn't mean it's silent.

what else...?

Louder than my PowerBook G4..

I received my MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz today and it's twice as loud as my old Powerbook G4.
I know that "noise" is subjective, but i called Applecare immediately and they do send me a new one within 10 days.

I received my 2.4 MBP today also and its dead silent.

Having said that, the only thing I have done so far is copy over my itunes library from my previous notebook (about 7 GB).

only when my face gets close to the laptop (usually when I'm really intrigued by something I'm reading/watching (c'mon people, you know you do it too)), and when i'm playing a CD/ DVD. other then that i cant hear i at all.

also its a really low noise when I'm close, CD/ DVD pretty loud.

Doesn't anyone have a decibel meter?

Does the fan run 100% of the time or does it stay on and simply change speeds as needed?

I was one of the lucky MDD G4 owners and the whining of the fans drove me mad; I don't want to repeat that adventure.

D

I have the Intel Core Duo 2.0 and it's fairly quiet.. I don't have much of an issue with the buzzing. However, if I really put it to use (many applications open), it tends to get hot. But, once the fans are in use, it's fine.

They stay on and vamp up as needed, thats why NO macbook pro is totaly silent,a compuer has moving parts=noise, some more some less

At last, this thread is making sense!!

On another note - I looked at my colleague's 2 month old Sony Vaio today (1.2 C2D) and it's incrediby quiet, while just under normal use, you really can't tell its on. My MacBook Pro is MUCH louder under the same use (bottom fan setting).

Crap screen though :p Really dull! I told him to increase his brightness...woops.

Really? I'm using a Powerbook G4 and the fan turns off until needed. This has been changed for the Macbook Pro?

Damn, why is there always something to worry about with Apple? I've dealt with these kind of "ghost in the machine" issues with just about every mac I've owned... 8100, G3, G4, G5, 5300, PB G3, PB G4, MDD G4, and a bunch of others. Apple always denies hearing of an issue until there is "suddenly" some sort of patch or fix; they talk to you like you are imagining things and are the ONLY person to ever mention xxx problem. I dread the possibility of the yellow screen, striped screen, loud fan, etc issues when I buy a new MBP!!! I wish there was some way to have them verify a MBP before they send it to me!?

The funniest sound issue I had was with an early macbook - the ones that mooed like a cow! The fan revving up and down sounded exactly like a cow...hilarious.

Normal Fan Speed 2000 RPM -- Really?

I find that a bit high -- I have one of the original MBP (Core Duo), and these idle at just 1000 rpm. My new Penryn MBP does seem to idle at 2000, but I wonder if that's actually normal.
