mine is pretty much silent when I am all alone at home....my old macbook on the other hand could be quite noisy when the fan rev'ed up....

MacBook Pros really are NOT "silent". People who describe them as "silent" either don't know the definition of the word, are in anything other than a "silent" or very quiet room, and/or are partially or wholly deaf.
</snip>

Well let me be the one to debunk that.

Silent: Not making or accompanied by any sound. (from dictionary.app)

When I'm not typing, and excluding the hard drive read/write noise, when my computer is on my lap it is not accompanied by any sound. Ergo, I can call it silent. Please don't accuse me (or others) of lying, perhaps we're just using a different definition/don't have hearing as perfect as you do.

I can hear the machine when it is idling provided I am in a super quite room.
Should it be completely silent or do most MBP's give off some minimal operating noise?

after I changed my hard drive it is all but silent

Unfortunately not

I would not consider my 2.2 SR that I bought last month silent. Its not LOUD but I can hear the heads parking every now and again and I can hear the drive when its thinking (clicks and just doing its thing, I guess). If I'm in a completely silent room (i.e. without the TV on and when the refrigerator is not making its own noises) I can hear the fans running and a slight buzz from the right fan. This is all during just normal use (i.e. using word or safari)

My mbp is silent. Same specs as TSE.

I installed the fan control app and it does not get hot all and like I mentioned extremely silent. I have had every single macbook pro since the switch always had some kind of problem. But this penryn machine is damn near perfection except for the fact that when closed is not straight.

Mine is completely silent/almost silent in normal tasks. I can definitely hear the fans when doing anything GPU and/or CPU intensive such as playing Call of Duty.

Never seen a "silent" laptop before. My old mbp was pretty quiet, as is my new MBA.

I had a MBP before I sold it off and got an MBA. (I had the first MBP from 2006). My machine was very quiet but it did have some noise from the hard drive and the fans of course. But other than that, it wasnt that bad. It was relatively quiet.

No, MB/MBP is not silent.

If you mean when its idling it makes some little noise, but under load its actually loud (compared to iMac or Mac Pro).

(tested rev. B MacBook white and black, SR 2.4 GHz 15" MBP - all the same basically)

I am using a 2.2 GHZ MBP and it runs quiet for the most part. If I do something that is processor intensive then the fans pick up, but it only lasts for a couple minutes.

Some people are either deaf or don't understand the meaning of silent. No MBP is silent. Most are fairly quiet and can't be heard if the ambient noise is high enough.

The latest penryn 15" models seem to be a little less quiet than previous versions for some reason. I've tried 3 in quiet environments (a house at night) and they aren't quite as quiet as previous versions.

If you want to hear silent try an MBA with an SSD drive.

My MBP (early 2008, 2.4, 250gb) is super quiet.. but had to install software to reduce CD speed when playing audio CD.

Well, it's not like anyone ever lives in a completely silent environment anyway. :D There's bound to be noise wherever you go.

My MBP runs so quiet I cant' hear it. I have to place my ear near the keyboard to actually hear any sound.

Penryns also run cooler, so they probably made it a little louder so it can run cooler.

Whats funny is that in the Core Duo days (1000 RPM min) people complained about heat, now with 2000+ RPM minimum people complain about noise ;) :D

The MBA has fans running at 2500RPM at lowest. Its not silent either, fans are running. You kinda killed your own argument.

It is true that the MBA fan runs at 2500rpm, so you are right it's not completely silent either. However, it's still much quieter than the MBP with a hard drive.

I can only hear mine when the fans go on about 3000-4000 rpm(mine didn't go above 4500 i think). So mine is pretty silent. I mean I can hear mine when it is at 2000 rpm but that only happens when I stick my ear to the computer -__-.

Mine's not silent. It used to be very quiet though. My mbp is just over a month or two old.

It's understandable that the fans are extremely loud when I'm playing WoW but I dislike the fact that it makes a bizarre electric buzzing noise when I'm just surfing the net...and from memory - it never used to so I'm pretty worried that something's wrong. If you youtube 'loud mbp' or 'mbp fan' you'll find lots of videos of people's mbp's and there's one where it sounds like the guy's mbp is a lawnmower. Although mine's nowhere near as bad - it is a quieter version of that sound.
