Mine is silent. When my external hard drives are off there is no sound that I can hear unless my ear is less than 6 inches from the Macbook Pro.

Unfortunately I need hundreds of gigabytes of storage for my photos so have to resort to a number of hard drives (Lacie, Maxtor and a Drobo) under my desk which are noisy and this upsets me just a little bit.

As for the mac itself - silent as far as I am concerned, even when I really push the CPU hard.

i can hear my fans running at 2000rpm in a silent room and especially at night when i sleep. it really annoys me because my macbook was totally silent with the fans at idle. my left fan seems to be making more noise than my right

Please also say what speed your fans are spinning at since the older mbp have lower rpm fans. I think many of us live in louder environments and our definition of 'silent' is different. My MBP's fans spin at 2000 rpm and I can hear the wooshing of the left fan almost always unless the TV is on or something. In a more silent environment too (like when I'm alone) I even hear the buzz of the LCD and the hard drive clicks.

Could it be the whirring noise from the hard disk instead?

no i hear that noise separately. its definitely an air whooshing sound and its getting on my nerves. if i cover the left half of the area between the lcd and base, then it goes away.
