When you choose to list out various computers you’ve owned over the last 40+ years to drive home just how bizarre you think something is, it’s going to be interpreted as snark by a lot of people.

Also, if someone starts talking about 6 meter cables shipping with devices, it seems rather obvious it was a typo.
Wow, you are one sassy guy. Getting this worked up over a comment is actually insane.

A few years ago, I got so frustrated at not having any long cables on hand that I started buying 6ft+ cables exclusively. In hindsight, it was a mistake... 99% of the time it was an unnecessary waste and sometimes actually more of an inconvenience than a shorter cable would have been. They're a godsend for that 1% of times where you need them though, no getting around that.
I know what you mean. When I got my new 17 Pro, the Beats 5' colorful 60W usb-c cables were on sale all over the place: Amazon, Best Buy, Target, etc. I bought four of them thinking I'd need to replace my lightning cables. (I came from an iPhone 13 Pro.) I returned two of them to get the then-also-on-sale Apple 1m 60W usb-c cables, much more convenient in the car or by the bedside or on a kitchen counter.

We're about a week away from saying goodbye to our A12X 11" iPad Pro launch day buy (broken screen), but the cable that came with that sucker is still chugging away in our rotation. (I have it powering one of the kids' alarm clocks.) It, along with the iPad it came with are such beasts!

Rearranging some stuff recently created one of those 1% situations but I never committed to buying a cable. This thread inspired me to look inside a couple saved tech boxes to see what other unused chargers, cables I might have. I'd forgotten all about the 6' braided usb-c cable that came with my Keychron keyboard.

Sometimes it pays to read oddball MR threads.

What am I missing here? Is 2m somehow universally known to be the only correct iPad charge cable length? The next customer wants a 1.5m cable so now what?

Just bought the M5 Pro and I cannot believe they are shipping this thing with a 1 meter USB-C cable when the device costs $1,300. They ship far cheaper MacBook Air’s with a 2 meter charging cable.

If you want to charge this thing and still use it you must be extremely close to an outlet. I should not have to think about this with a device so expensive.
I mean 1m is all most people need or want...

Yup. Apple braided 1m cables are my favorite charging cables. Making them longer would probably also make them thicker, and just have excess cable hanging around. If you want 2+ meter cables, they are a few clicks and one delivery away. OP could’ve ordered one in the time they took to write their post.

You’re apparently missing the obvious.

Apple sells all of their laptops with 2 meter cables. They sell the iPad Pro for a far higher price than some of those laptops, and yet they ship the iPad with a cable half the length, for no apparent reason.

Instead of asking why I’m asking this question, it seems more obvious to ask why is Apple doing it this way. It makes no sense.

I've got a USB-C charging cable available on both sides of the couch and both sides of the bed. Doesn't everyone at this point?

You’re apparently missing the obvious.

Your attitude is kinda annoying and yet you are expecting everyone to engage with you in good faith and respond to every point. No, lol. The cable length is specified before you buy it. You spent this much, go buy a cable of your favourite length.

Six feet to two meters used to be the standard length for power cords. For some reason, this has become less over time for charging cables. I often find 1 m too short, in particular if you want to use the device while charging.

Apple sells 2 meter braided cables exactly like the one I’m suggesting they ship with the iPad Pro, and they’re no thicker than the 1 meter cable……

This is my point here. It seems they intentionally ship the shortest possible cable with iPads and also iPhones in hopes that some people will buy a longer cable from them. With the iPhone you could argue it’s fine, it’s a phone, but an iPad Pro that you sell for more than some laptops, and that you market as a laptop esque device? No, you should be shipping a laptop length cable with that product.

My AVP only came with a 1.5m charging cable. Based on your logic I should be hopping mad or something.

My attitude? Who are you kidding?

You replied to me sarcastically asking if 2 meters is universally known as the only correct iPad cable length, while ignoring the obvious point I made about the iPad Pro being sold and marketed as a device comparable to a MacBook, which DOES ship with a 2 meter cable.

You were not responding in good faith.

I mean, how else will they be able to sell you an additional longer cable?
So true.

Apple is hyper focused on maximizing profits, it’s beneficial to those of us who are shareholders but not particularly beneficial to buyers.

The masters of getting every last dollar, cable sales are but one example, they make a nice contribution to the companies bottom line. In turn this enhances dividends for shareholders.

The only 2 meter charging cable I've ever received came in the elaborate box for my series 0 Apple Watch. I still have it but it's usb-a to watch puck, and doesn't do fast charging so it lives in the Apple drawer.
Still use my S0 cable at my bedside for overnight charging. The 1m was way too short when I upgraded.

Then why did you buy the iPad if it's such an issue? It told you the length of the cable that it was coming with before you bought it. If you're so juiced up over it maybe next time you can buy refurbed to save money for a cable or sum.

Well - you have to remember that corporations essentially exist to serve the shareholders. Now it should follow that if you serve the customers well, then that should also serve the shareholders well. But - let's be clear that in this hierarchy, the shareholder trumps the customer every time.

So - if they make more money packing in a short cable so you have to buy a long one, they will always do that. Unless... you refuse to buy the iPad because of the short cable, or you buy a longer cable from someone else. Vote with your dollars! You have the power!

I did not create this thread to express buyers remorse.

I created it to point out how illogical it is that Apple ships all their laptops with the longer cable, but still ships the expensive iPad Pro with the short cable.

Sometimes people complain about things they bought and like, but they still think it could be better.

I use an extension cord that came with my iBooks and MacBooks. Got my Dual 30W charger that slides on. It is snaked under my loveseat then comes up between the cushions, where its connector lives on the cushion next to me. I keep an Watch fast charger puck and a usb-c to usb-c for iPad Pro and iPhone. My daily driver is the M4 iPP…no Magic Keyboard. I don’t gave professional workflows to data transfers or anything. I use TV 4K for video consumption, but I like to surf, and especially love reading news articles on iPP.
