It’s definitely worth it on macs. They break a lot out of warranty. Usually there ends up being a repair program, but I always seem to have to get my repairs before Apple realizes they have a design flaw.
Are you talking desktops or laptops? I’ve had no issues with my Air from 2011 and 2017. Multiple iMacs have had no issues other than a failed hard drive in the first Intel iMac, but I changed that out myself. But I suppose the days that this level of user serviceability are over, so you probably have a good point!

Typical Apple though. The same that charges $329 for a 6.5" OLED (11 Pro max) replacement that the part costs about $67 per supply chain sources. EVEN paying an employee an hour and some toward the equipment to do the process, that is easily 50% or more profit to Apple hence the insane cost. It SHOULD be a $199 repair maximum.
“Apple reported 42.5% gross margins in the March quarter, its strongest rate yet since 2012.”

Missed it by 7.5%.

So if I have AppleCare+, and I sit my fat butt down on top of my iPad in the car and bend it , it only cost $49 to get it fixed ?
No. The Applecare agreement specifically states that the accidental damage part of the plan does not cover catastrophic damage. A drop is accidental damage as more than likely a corner of the screen gets damaged but if you sit on it, roll over it with your car or dunk it in the pool and allow it soak past the water resistant tolerances that would be considered catastrophic.

Wow! That is pricey. I currently have no AppleCare with my Macbook Air M1, Apple Watch Series 6, iPad Pro 2017 10.5", and definitely not on the two AppleTVs. This makes me reconsider getting it for a new iPad Pro, at least.

While it's certainly possible for anyone to break an apple gadget which requires an eyepoppingly expensive repair, it's extremely unlikely that anyone would consistently break their gear year after year.
In the long run, when paying for insurance year after year after year after year, Apple insurance is a rip off. Nobody is going to break that much gear.

If I had just a nickel in my hand for every time someone here, Apple Support Forums and Reddit posted that they damaged their screen or the hinges broke but didn't have Applecare Plus I would be rich enough to buy out Apple. I find it offensive that some here are trying to call others careless just because they have had zero issues with their Macs and others have. Furthermore they are calling people stupid for buying Applecare Plus. Okay good for you, you've had no issues, that doesn't mean you never will and it doesn't mean that others should buy Applecare just because they are careless. SMH.

Also remember that the limit to one year's warranty for manufacturer faults doesn't apply in many countries that have stronger consumer protection laws than the USA. We're entitled to a free repair for any faults long after the first year, which does reduce the value of AppleCare. I suppose the accidental damage aspect of AppleCare might be considered useful by some in this situation though.

That's not at all accurate, unless you can show us where it officially states that.

I’m doing nothing. I had two MBPs with the nvidia manufacturing flaw. I had several macs with butterfly keyboards. I had two macs with peeling anti-glare coating.

I don’;t care if you treat your mac with kid gloves - these were well known manufacturing flaws that resulted in Apple having to institute extended repair programs where they do the repairs, out of apple care, for free.
In my experience, the only failures I have had have been manufacturing defects that were covered out of warranty.

I have owned a
IIsi
IIvx
Quadra 840
PB 1400cs
iMac 266
iMac 333
iBook blue
iBook gray
iBook G4 14”
PowerMac G4
iMac core2Extreme
MBP 15”
MBP 13”
MBP 15” unibody (2012)

Only repairs were defects: replaced bulging batteries in a couple laptops and video card problems in the iBook G4. After the second video problem, they gave me a new “refurb” on a 3 yr old iBook G4 with the video corruption issue. And I opened, upgraded, modified and even overclocked (with solder) most of these machines.

The mobile devices have also been relatively trouble free, though the iPhone 6S was problematic. My original series watch had a bulging battery and was replaced well out of warranty. The replacement is still going strong as my sleep watch.

Forgot about:
core duo mini
Core2 mini server
Macintosh SE (still works last time I checked)

Sell it on eBay as “for parts or not working” and use the proceeds to buy a replacement . It will probably still end up costing you less than what Apple charges for the repair.

I recognize the iPad Pro is expensive, relative to anything in a tablet. Then again, if I thought it was valuable to my work flow I'd buy one. Instead, I'll pick up the next iPad Air to serve as a review of books authored and using them for sheet music.

When one has to buy a pair of Neumann U87ai for recording, perhaps a second Avalon VT-737sp along the way and other very long-term necessary pieces of hardware for a studio I'll take adding the Apple Care on any Mac [laptop/desktop/workstation] and the iPhone/Watch but nothing else as I don't see the deep value in the iPad Pro. I'd rather buy a Wacom Cintiq Pro Touch 24 to extend my Mac for all graphics/modeling/animation/film based interests.

We care about the environment, so we're going to charge you more than an iPad Air to repair it.

ONLY 64% the cost of it new 🤦‍♂️ Bargain.

Perhaps you should buy enough AAPL stock, do a hostile takeover and oust Tim Cook since apparently to you he doesn’t know what he is doing but you can out perform him.

This is why with these devices I don' buy them outright plus AppleCare here in Australia. I get the device through my mobile phone operator (Optus) on a plan which works out cheaper than buying outright plus data, and this includes insurance via Optus which is cheaper and covers the same hardware components. When a major failure occurs my Optus insurance pays me upon a repair / replacement quote from Apple, Optus pays the money to my account and I pay for a brand new replacement at Apple - presto.
