Well, you CAN buy a smart TV with a panel you like and leave the “smart” section disconnected from the internet while using an Apple TV box. That’s what I do. I guarantee you economies of scale ensure a true “dumb” TV would cost no less.
You are correct that you can use the display of a smart TV but you can never directly connect to that panel like you can on a dumb TV. Sure you can stop the thing from spying on you by disconnecting the WiFi, but you still have to deal with the interface that’s terrible. I guess this is the future because even Apple’s monitors have some type of smart capability. They’re not dumb display panels you connect to.

This will end the same way the car did.
If they could’ve somehow taken out what would’ve been their main competitor in the EV market they had a chance. With that company still in business I don’t see Apple being successful in the EV market. Even established legacy auto makers aren’t doing so well in the EV market.

55” OLED Apple Television: $2999
65”: $3999
75”: $5999
85”: $7999

If this ever comes into fruition, you already know they’re going to be priced something like that.

You already know they’re already trying to figure out how they’re going to creatively market it as the best TV the world has ever seen.

And because it’s Apple, you already know it’ll probably work.

Assuming they don't make one with no inputs and have the built in tvOS be more restrictive

I could see them creating the captive audience and then trying to get a cut of revenue from those who want the "privilege" of being able to have their Apps on here

I put nothing past Tim's Apple
Well I would hope that wouldn’t be the direction they go. I feel like tvOS is already pretty limited.

My Apple TV remote is by far the worst remote among all of my streamer remotes (which include Roku and Nvidia Shield). It has the worst size and shape ergonomically, the weakest connection (resulting in frequent disconnects) and no dedicated Fast Forward and Rewind buttons.
Hm, interesting, I can't think of a single time when it disconnected. Yes, the scrolling is meh, but tbh it scrolls a lot better than my tv, which just starts to lag. Mind you, my tv is only a couple of years old.

I would challenge that assumption because it would be a $25-2700 TV. They can’t keep their monitors on a competitive footing they surely don’t have the drive to keep up with the yearly churn of the TV market. The delta for people who would buy that is likely way below the threshold of what would be required for them to spin up production and market such a thing. Some people will buy anything Apple makes, sure. But the slow chill of the once thriving market they once enjoyed means they have to be real careful. A causal toe-dip into TVs will do more reputational harm than leaving it alone. Their window to do TVs closed a long time ago
The cost is a good point. I guess with wishful thinking I would hope they would charge it at a normal price lol. But knowing Apple, it would likely be priced too high.

It would have to have micro leds be super thin and hang on a wall like a Frame TV.

Here we go again with the Apple TV.
Stiff competition and quality sets would give Apple a run for their money unless AI is included
Another consideration is how often do people replace their TVs??

Yes please. Should be quite easy, too. The only OLED panel suppliers right now are LG and Samsung, both of which Apple already does extensive business with for iPhone and iPad panels. Just put Apple Silicon power inside plus the Apple TV UI (and maybe nicer integrated audio) and you‘re good to go.
I wonder when Apple is going to cut ties with LG and Samsung and manufacture their own panels.

Nah, it would be overpriced, too small, underperforming and probably without decent input options.
I agree. I've been using a wall-mounted 75 inch LG for the last few years and it's awesome. But I suspect that any Apple TV set would be much smaller than this due to cost reasons. And if they did make a 75 or 80 inch TV, it would probably be extortionately priced. Personally, I don't think Apple would go after this market - profits are too razor thin, and Apple have seen how price-sensitive customers are with Vision Pro.

I control my LG TV with my Apple TV 4K. It's used for all of my viewing as it works very well; I don't use any of the built in LG apps, or the LG UI at all.

So rather than an actual TV, I'd like to see an Apple-branded sound bar which incorporates an Apple TV 4K unit all in one sleek, slim unit I can wall-mount under my TV.

I'd deffo replace my existing LG soundbar and standalone Apple TV with that. Plus, because the soundbar is positioned centrally, below the TV, Apple could add a camera in there for a great FaceTime experience.

Call it Apple Soundbar, and sell it at a reasonable price (under $500) and I think it would sell. Maybe add a higher spec model called Soundbar Pro which includes gesture detection - for media control, etc.

I suspect something like that is more likely than an actual TV set...

Kudos to everyone here who already knows whether the thing will be a success or not, and what it will be like or not like.

It's so inspiring to see such confidence where people don't doubt their own opinions at all

It’ll never happen. The profit margins on TV’s ain’t great and Apple doesn’t play small margins.

I disagree, I could see Apple not only able to make profit on it - but use it as a way to boost their Apple TV and other service integrations, leading to subscription income that many of the competitors just can't do. Apple Fitness for example if well integrated or Apple Arcade - perhaps music video's on Apple Music etc all seamlessly working, yes I could see it doing really well. Apple Airplay etc in my experience just isn't as great compared to what it could be if properly integrated.

Wake me when someone decides to make a 'dumb' TV again. Something with a gorgeous display that does absolutely nothing except display whatever content I feed into it via a variety of ports.

Is that too much to ask???
I remember when researching potential tv sets didn’t include a mandatory reddit thread dive on how to stop it from spying on you and selling your data.

Enough reason to ask for it, because Tim Cook will wait and wait and wait and wait until he gets sent off or retires, then to find a successor that hopefully implements it
