What would they be able to offer that nobody is currently offering?
An incredible markup and a design only your wall can appreciate. If it’s anything like their displays it either would lack a power button or the button would be located in the middle of where you put the vesa wall mount hardware.

Wake me when someone decides to make a 'dumb' TV again. Something with a gorgeous display that does absolutely nothing except display whatever content I feed into it via a variety of ports.

Is that too much to ask???
I don't understand...

Any Smart TV can "just display your content", and at this point, removing Smart Features won't make your TV less expensive at all. There's been too much $ invested from TV companies and at this point it's easier for them to just put their OS versus developing something dumb again.

As for me, I have an LG OLED Smart TV since 2018 and I have never EVER used any smart feature. It doesn't make my TV any less appealing.

On my LG I use the Jellyfin app to watch tv and movies that are fed into it from server-side by various Usenet sources. That’s it. It’s that, or displaying a PC or game console. I use nothing else it offers.

AppleCare is an additional 1,000$ and doesn’t cover anything that occurs if the new Mac smell isn’t detectable by an olfactometer. Dust and fingerprints WILL, of course, void the warranty as does usage in a humid climate (whereby humidity above 12% is the standard for voiding the warranty). An accelerometer is also present to record holding the TV wrong. This also voids the warranty.
Sounds about right ha!

Apple would have something very compelling to offer over the current offerings from LG and Samsung etc, and honestly, I cannot think of what that could be

On one hand I have been dreaming about Apple making TVs. On the other hand, how much is that gonna cost?!

Easy, Siri integration. “Put on ESPN”. “Record the Yankees game tomorrow”. Also, better integration with the TV app with your iTunes purchases.
iTunes purchases? the HomePod would like a word with you. We all should know by now that this would be a frustrating experience with the reality of Siri used as the primary means of control because Apple has proven utterly incapable of advancing their assistant.

“Hey siri record the Yankees game tomorrow”

Siri: “OK I’ll add yankee candles to your shopping list”

“No Siri! Just turn on ESPN.”

Siri: “ok I’ll show you movies with Emilio Estevez”

For Apple TV apps that support Siri integration, it works quite well. Siri on the Apple TV is a lot different than Apple TV on the iPhone. It doesn’t even have notes or lists and stuff like that. It’s narrowly focused on TV functions.

Cue Apple users complaining about eye strain while using Apple OLED tvs.

Insta-buy.
Same. Mainly because of any company, Apple is the one I’d trust the most not to embed all sorts of privacy-invading technology into a TV set. I’m hoping the ancient LG sets I have now, from the “pre” smart TV era, last long enough to see this rumour come true.

Even Apple won’t be able to get cable companies to give up on their set top boxes.

I’ve found it to be, and I’m being charitable here, a VERY uneven experience at best with the AppleTV. But a whole TV set with this would necessarily need to do more than just those few things it does a middling job of now.

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used the Siri Remote to speak commands, that’s how challenging it is. Plus the interface is a disaster in terms of usability and accessibility. Only one other person seems bothered by it though, the venerable John Siracusa.

I have my Sony set that way, but I still have to wait for it to boot. From the time I hit the power button to when I can switch inputs (I just timed it) - 29 seconds. All because it needs to initialize all the garbage I don't want. "Powering on...please wait."

No Sony, I shouldn't have to wait. It's a ****ing television. It's not just Sony of course - everyone is going down the tired path of monetizing subscriptions and personal data in the quest for never ending stock growth.

I fully realize I'm tilting at windmills, however! :)
They're just trying to give you that authentic tube experience back.

This is interesting news. Along with the news of a smart home kind of device, I wonder if Apple feels like there is not much more to do with their current devices, so they're deciding to expand their product portfolio.

If they don’t have MBAs screaming in their ears about what a lousy idea it is to enter a saturated market filled with “good enough” offerings there’s something deadly wrong. This won’t add to their portfolio

I wonder how they are going to do that. There is very little to design on a modern TV. I have an LG G3 and it's basically a large black rectangle with a tiny bezel that is mounted flush to the wall. You can make the bezels and the screen even thinner, I guess, but that's not really going to make a huge difference. Not sure what you can do design-wise is there is nothing to design. The only thing I can come up with is a screen with absolutely no bezel at all.
Think of it as a 55" to 70" iMac but running tvOS. It'll have a built-in FaceTime camera and 6-speaker audio system supporting Spatial Audio

They could partner with Panasonic and get a slighter more expensive TV made by Panasonic by with Apple TV software.

So an ugly chin and some speakers engineered for a room with dimensions only an Apple executive could afford. Plus a jelly lens camera. Sign me up!

Apple has the power of their brand behind them. If they make an actual TV with competitive (or better) specs compared to what else is out there and build tvOS into it, I think there would be interest in that for some people.

Assuming they don't make one with no inputs and have the built in tvOS be more restrictive

I could see them creating the captive audience and then trying to get a cut of revenue from those who want the "privilege" of being able to have their Apps on here

I put nothing past Tim's Apple
