The big surprise tomorrow will be The Beatles on iTunes available later in the year (not to interfere with the CD remaster release) and the iPod Nano coming in Beatles inspired psychedelic colors. Nothing of real interest to me though.

Maybe the "surprise" will be a Core i5 mini-tower?

Saw this today:

Full story link.

"Full story" is a:

  • 2.66 Quad Core i5
  • Intel Motherboard
  • 4 GiB OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666
  • 1 GB 7200 drive
  • Mid-tower case (black, not beige ;) )
  • 550 watt PS
for under $600...

Man I hope there's a tablet. I'm not expecting it, but I would be on that like flies on poop.

John Gruber posted his predictions on Daring Fireball.

He says:

-iTUNES-What makes iTunes such an odd duck for Apple is that it’s not just a Mac app — there are far more iTunes users on Windows, and but there is no 64-bit Cocoa runtime for Windows. So here’s my pet theory: at some point iTunes will be rewritten using WebKit to render the UI. I’m not saying iTunes will become a web browser — just that the UI itself will be a WebKit view. WebKit is cross-platform and built for the future.

Gruber has lost his mind. He needs to quit drinking the Adobe AIR kool-aid. The iTunes Store may get rendered by WebKit in iTunes 9, but there’s no way the UI will be in WebKit view. Maybe Apple will bring back “yellow box” for Windows?!?

Here's my final "three-day wild guess" on what we'll see on 9 September 2009:

1) Steve Jobs will host the keynote address.

2) Will announce that the iTunes Store now sells an amazing 25% of all new music in the USA.

3) Will demonstrate iTunes 9.0 with QuickTime X, available immediately in a 64-bit version for MacOS X 10.6 and Windows Vista/7 in 64-bit mode. Will use somewhat revamped interface, adds social network support for Facebook and MySpace, and adds support for the "Cocktail" digital album liner note format.

4) Announces the phaseout of the iPod shuffle (!).

5) Announces the new 5G iPod nano with new, wider aspect ratio screen and "Cocktail" digital album liner note format support. Will be available in three versions:

a) 8 GB with no camera/microphone (US$99). Case color will be silver only.
b) 16 GB with 3.2 megapixel camera/microphone (US$149). Case colors will the same as current 4G iPod nano selection.
c) 32 GB with 3.2 megapixel camera/microphone (US$199) Case colors will be black and Product Red only.

6) Announces new 7G iPod classic with new, higher-resolution and wider aspect ratio screen (smaller click wheel to accommodate wider aspect ratio screen) and "Cocktail" digital album liner note format support. Storage capacity is now 160 GB using a new 1.8" single platter drive, and case colors will be silver and black only. Possibility exists for 128 GB flash memory storage if Apple can secure supplies at a decent price in lieu of 160 GB hard drive. Will be priced at US$249, the same as the current "6.5G" iPod classic.

7) Announces new 3G iPod touch, essentially an iPhone 3Gs with no cellphone function. Will incorporate new 3.2 megapixel sensor camera on back of player, will incorporate iPhone 3.1 software with full "Cocktail" digital album liner note support. Will be priced at US$199 (16 GB), US$299 (32 GB) and US$399 (64 GB).

8) Announces deal to offer the remastered Beatles albums on iTunes Store, to be available for download including the full "Cocktail" digital album liner notes in mid-November 2009.

No way will they get rid of the shuffle tomorrow. After the cameras are in all the other ipods, this is the only device that will be allowed in health clubs.

Surprise us Apple!! Make all these rumors FALSE by giving us the BEST!!

"So you guessed it, a new ipod refresh this time! WRONG!!!"

i could see peoples faces if steve jobs said that...lol

About Steve Jobs, I think we have a 50/50 chance of seeing him. But I wouldn't mind seeing Phil Schiller, I like him.

4) Announces the phaseout of the iPod shuffle (!).

As much as I think the button-less iPod Shuffle is a stupid idea (the last gen was the sweet spot between size and functionality), they are definitely not getting rid of it. Especially now. IDK if anyone else has noticed, but the shuffle is not updated with the rest of the iPods. They do it during the Spring/late winter (~March for those of you south of the equator). Besides, the shuffle is selling quite well. So no.

I think you've pretty much nailed it. I agree with what someone else said that I doubt they would phase out the shuffle though - unless of course the video nano was getting down to the size of the original shuffle

I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but they had to leave the iPhone OS 3.1 introduction until the ipod touch had a camera. If 3.1 has the rumoured augmented reality APIs included then they would need for all devices running it to have a camera. I hope we see the OS3.1 launch today. I'm wondering if google maps will have a nifty street view tie-in as a demonstrator app.

Reported today on NME.com. Dunno what it ultimately means...

"Paul McCartney has told NME.COM that he wants The Beatles songs to be available as downloads.

The Fab Four's work has long been absent from official download services, but the bassist and songwriter said he and the band are keen for them to be available online – and blamed record label EMI for the delay.

"We were having problems with iTunes – well not iTunes, EMI was the problem – with downloading, which we'd like to do because that's how a lot of people get their music," explained McCartney.

However, the legend suggested the band have managed to get round the problem by getting involved in the new 'The Beatles: Rock Band' game, which is released tomorrow (September 9).

"We've kind of bypassed that [download problems] because now you can do it in 'Rock Band'," he said. "I always liked that, when you're told you can't do something and suddenly there's a little route round the back.""

I don't think the iTunes/Beatles announcement is coming tomorrow. If it were indeed true, wouldn't they have chosen a Beatles song to headline the show vs. a Rolling Stones song? LoL That seems to sort of fly in the face of that idea IMHO. ;)

Hopefully, they'll announce some new damn text tones for my iphone. It's only been never since they last did that.

By the way, one reason for the existance of the shuffle in the first place was because it could play FairPlay-DRM'ed AAC files.

But now that Apple has dropped FairPlay for AAC audio files, there is no real need for the shuffle anymore. Hence the possibility of a non-camera 5G iPod nano with 8 GB of flash memory selling for only US$99, not much more than the current 3G iPod shuffle with 4 GB of flash memory.

My guesses:

itunes/beatles announcement
end of shuffle
iPod touch w/camera 8gb-64gb the 8gb will be $149
iPod Nano w/camera
Classic has a software update- can't see much happening with it will probably die next year if the iPod touch can get over 100gb.

4] Not going to happen. See the camera comment above mine

5] Don't see the tiered thing happening. Probably cheaper to have all the nanos have the same case design (unless they decide to plug the camera hole in a camera-less model, but I don't see Steve Jobs okaying that), and after the current nano-chromatic scheme, I don't see them going back to the way the second and third generations were structured color-wise. I don't know about a 32GB model either; last time Apple hastily added a 16GB model and canned the 4GB model after production started because of the Zune 8 and Zune 16. Not much pressure on that front this time.

6] 160GB single-platters don't exist, not that I know of, at least. Currently it's still 120 single and 250 double. While it's time for a hardware change, I don't find it likely.

8] Why announce it now? EMI already said it wasn't happening yet/soon.

So, how long does it typically take for ipods to show up on amazon after they are announced? I like not paying tax ;)

So still 13.5 hours left... Thanks for your help, in 13.5 Hours I'll be in deep REM Sleep :(

Go to bed now and get up early! Then go back to bed! ;)

Usually a week or two. I too live in Cali. However, I'm imagining there will be a lower-priced tax-free & free shipping online store out there. Amazon usually doesn't discount off retail, though their free shipping and no tax more than make up for it.
