All iPads It's over, returned iPad Air (updated:re-purchased!) - due to constrained 1GB RAM

The crashing is due to bad coding. If ram was the limitation you'd notice slowdowns when you loaded pages, and ios7 esp.

I would disagree with that. To secure more RAM, I'm pretty sure they are simply closing down other programs, and jettisoning other tabs that are in memory, in order to free up RAM. Since they have always been tight on RAM, they are pretty good at free it up for the "in focus" app/tab

Sad fellas - I returned my iPad AIR this morning! Yes, you need to read this because I have had a hard time with this iPad AIR due to the fact it will crash due to low memory so often when I use safari and I'm not even using more than 2 tabs at once. I really think this new 64bit architecture is just constraining the ram big time and the paltry 1GB is not going to cut it with 64bit apps.

I've had a good time with my iPad 4, 3, and 2 (which is on iOS 6) and I again feel apple is really just milking this iPad 1GB RAM model one last year before next year they will unleash a larger RAM model. They very well know this 1GB ram is not cutting it but what do you do if you were apple? Release nothing for 2 years time and then release the 64-bit design and more ram or just do what you gotta do now to look relevant?

Sorry to see you go iPad AIR, but my wallet cannot sustain heavy damage this year when the next year apple will release a better model with more ram. Back to my stable iPad 4 (which really is no slouch!)

I've never had a problem with Safari crashing on my Air and I have multiple tabs open all the time. If RAM was such a huge issue then millions of iPads would be returned. Maybe it's an iOS 7 issue?

There are lots of reports of people having lots of crashes, exchanging, and then getting precious few/none afterwards. So perhaps there is some kind of hardware issue. Perhaps they restored, but then the second time, they approached it as a brand new device?

It does not appear to be as cut and dry iOS7, as one would think. I'll admit I thought it was iOS7 at 70% and 1Gig RAM at 30%.

If it is faulty hardware would the crashes necessarily have to be due to bad RAM?

I'm not sure that it is the restore / set up as new device as if that was the case then surly there would be reports about this for iPhone 5s?

I think large amounts of crashes to the point where someone feels that it is unusable, maybe like the OP has some faulty hardware somewhere. The whole 'cant keep 2 tabs open at the same time, constantly refreshing' sounds like a memory leak and software issue - as again not everyone is experiencing that so maybe you have to load something specfic for the 'memory leak' to start/happen?

How you ever had a ram shortage on a computer? Things take forever to load due to it.

This never bothered me until I started trying to open DWG files in the autocad app for work. The files are measly 2-3MB yet I always get an error that says my device is out of memory and I need to restart. Total crap, 1GB is hogwash and Apple knows it

2-3 MEGAbyte files are giving you errors on a system with one GIGAbyte of RAM?

Have you considered maybe the app is buggy?

Not really, it doesn't matter what size the DWG file is. I've tried to open large and small files and get the same memory error. This is in addition to Safari crashes although I think a lot of that has to do with iOS 7 and inefficient/premature design.

Zero crashes with Chrome, while Safari throws a fit ever so often with multiple tabs open.... I'm pretty sure it is a coding issue.

Btw, 7.1 ( current beta release ) doesn't address this ... Hoping subsequent builds will fix the crash bug.

You still think its a RAM issue when you can't even open a file? That's the app plain and simple. Ignore the 'memory error' it's just bad wording on Apple's part. All it means is the app isn't coded properly. It doesn't even matter if it works fine on an older device, that just points even further that the app is having a problem with the new processors and not RAM....

I bought the iPad AIR knowing that it only had 1GB of RAM and was a bit peeved at Apple for not releasing it with 2GB. I fully expect the next release to have 2GB but I was not going to wait another year for that to happen.

I've had safari crash a couple of times for whatever reason but I had it back up where I left off in a matter of a couple seconds. FYI Safari on my iPad 1 was crashing much more frequently to a point I was getting annoyed.

I feel opinions that Apple was skimping on hardware to maximize their profits are valid but still my experience with the iPad Air has been positive and I feel no need to return it. The tablet alternatives with their better hardware specs aren't enough to get me to switch platforms.

Well said, I absolutely have the same feelings.

Then you should consider a buggy app as a possibility rather than assume it's the memory if it doesn't matter what the size is.

Why wait for iOS 7.1? Magically software is gonna fix ram limitations? I see how all you guys think. No wonder apple makes billions. Give you gimped RAM, gimped color gamut displays, yet you guys line up to buy them.

I voted with my wallet! NO THANKS. iPad 4 is still great. Will save up for next model 2014 with more ram.

Wow, terrible terrible attempt at a trolling thread, well done.

That is what I was suspecting. Most likely memory leaks and other bugs in Safari.

Well gentlemen - I had a chance to try out a relative's iPad AIR 64GB model w/o cellular and there are a ton of low memory logs as well but his safari does not crash the same way my returned iPad AIR did. Now I am suspecting maybe hardware issue? Nothing conclusive but definitely seems odd.

sorry you've had bad luck with yours :(

I haven't had any crashes at all...
On another note... I'm amaze that I can play more than 20 instruments in garageband and the iPad plays smoothly and shows no signs of being struggling as my MacBook pro did...

I use my Air all the time and never deal with any crashes.

What else would you use Safari for?

Safari isn't what has crashed for me - if anything its random apps, likely those that haven't been updated to 64 bit.

I noticed that when I first bought my Air, I dealt with some occasional crashes. Now that all my apps are upgraded to iOS 7 I literally never see any crashes. Safari has some issues, but it hasn't been crashing recently on my device.

Thats because it swap RAM to HD and back. Your iPad doesn't do that. When memory gets low, it ask applications to release memory. If still low, it nukes apps.
