I would disagree with that. To secure more RAM, I'm pretty sure they are simply closing down other programs, and jettisoning other tabs that are in memory, in order to free up RAM. Since they have always been tight on RAM, they are pretty good at free it up for the "in focus" app/tabThe crashing is due to bad coding. If ram was the limitation you'd notice slowdowns when you loaded pages, and ios7 esp.
Sad fellas - I returned my iPad AIR this morning! Yes, you need to read this because I have had a hard time with this iPad AIR due to the fact it will crash due to low memory so often when I use safari and I'm not even using more than 2 tabs at once. I really think this new 64bit architecture is just constraining the ram big time and the paltry 1GB is not going to cut it with 64bit apps.
I've had a good time with my iPad 4, 3, and 2 (which is on iOS 6) and I again feel apple is really just milking this iPad 1GB RAM model one last year before next year they will unleash a larger RAM model. They very well know this 1GB ram is not cutting it but what do you do if you were apple? Release nothing for 2 years time and then release the 64-bit design and more ram or just do what you gotta do now to look relevant?
Sorry to see you go iPad AIR, but my wallet cannot sustain heavy damage this year when the next year apple will release a better model with more ram. Back to my stable iPad 4 (which really is no slouch!)
There are lots of reports of people having lots of crashes, exchanging, and then getting precious few/none afterwards. So perhaps there is some kind of hardware issue. Perhaps they restored, but then the second time, they approached it as a brand new device?I've never had a problem with Safari crashing on my Air and I have multiple tabs open all the time. If RAM was such a huge issue then millions of iPads would be returned. Maybe it's an iOS 7 issue?

This never bothered me until I started trying to open DWG files in the autocad app for work. The files are measly 2-3MB yet I always get an error that says my device is out of memory and I need to restart. Total crap, 1GB is hogwash and Apple knows it
2-3 MEGAbyte files are giving you errors on a system with one GIGAbyte of RAM?
Have you considered maybe the app is buggy?
Total crap, 1GB is hogwash and Apple knows it
I've tried to open large and small files and get the same memory error.
I bought the iPad AIR knowing that it only had 1GB of RAM and was a bit peeved at Apple for not releasing it with 2GB. I fully expect the next release to have 2GB but I was not going to wait another year for that to happen.
I've had safari crash a couple of times for whatever reason but I had it back up where I left off in a matter of a couple seconds. FYI Safari on my iPad 1 was crashing much more frequently to a point I was getting annoyed.
I feel opinions that Apple was skimping on hardware to maximize their profits are valid but still my experience with the iPad Air has been positive and I feel no need to return it. The tablet alternatives with their better hardware specs aren't enough to get me to switch platforms.
Not really, it doesn't matter what size the DWG file is. I've tried to open large and small files and get the same memory error. This is in addition to Safari crashes although I think a lot of that has to do with iOS 7 and inefficient/premature design.
Why wait for iOS 7.1? Magically software is gonna fix ram limitations? I see how all you guys think. No wonder apple makes billions. Give you gimped RAM, gimped color gamut displays, yet you guys line up to buy them.
I voted with my wallet! NO THANKS. iPad 4 is still great. Will save up for next model 2014 with more ram.
Zero crashes with Chrome, while Safari throws a fit ever so often with multiple tabs open.... I'm pretty sure it is a coding issue.
Btw, 7.1 ( current beta release ) doesn't address this ... Hoping subsequent builds will fix the crash bug.
Well gentlemen - I had a chance to try out a relative's iPad AIR 64GB model w/o cellular and there are a ton of low memory logs as well but his safari does not crash the same way my returned iPad AIR did. Now I am suspecting maybe hardware issue? Nothing conclusive but definitely seems odd.

What else would you use Safari for?
Safari isn't what has crashed for me - if anything its random apps, likely those that haven't been updated to 64 bit.
Thats because it swap RAM to HD and back. Your iPad doesn't do that. When memory gets low, it ask applications to release memory. If still low, it nukes apps. How you ever had a ram shortage on a computer? Things take forever to load due to it.
All the iPads that I have used crashed apps using iOS 7. It has to be that the ram is too low.
No, it doesn't have to be because the RAM is too low. It can be buggy apps or iOS 7.
You are not using Chrome enough. I use Chrome exclusively and it does crash, even on MR.Zero crashes with Chrome
