Well, here's a fun new discovery. The metal ring around my home button sits ever so slightly ABOVE the glass. I can catch my fingernail on it, and it feels rough and sharp if I swipe my finger across it. Minor but totally annoying. Since the screen is pretty great, I'm not chancing another return.

Free Ipad Air 2

My does have the slight bookspine issue, but I'll keep it as long as it is free. For some reason Apple did NOT change my preauth on my debit card to a purchase. Now it is totally gone from my card. I HOPE but don't expect it to stay that way, but is it even POSSIBLE to get Apple to charge me with out shipping me a second or getting double charged??

I'll see what I can do...

I think this captures it fairly well. I assume not all iPads or like this, so I suppose I'll begin a return process with Apple. Very disappointed about their QC.

My iPad 3 had that same issue. I decided to keep it and it bothered my for a year until I got my Air 1. It also had some pretty significant light bleed. Gave it to my husband and pointed both defects out to him and he couldn't see either.

Go figure! Looking back, I should have exchanged it. The only time it didn't bother me was when I was reading and that's because I changed to white text on black background. Plus, IOS wasn't as WHITE either. It will just be worse now.

Keeping my fingers crossed that my new Air 2 doesn't have it. I hate returning things and I really, really don't want to climb on that roller coaster. I'll know by the end of today.

If you get a reflection on the screen in a dark part of it (something showing black is best) and look close enough, you can see the touch "grid" underneath the screen. Kind of weird.

Other than that, my main concern with what's wrong with it so far is all in iOS 8.

Book Spine

Lat night went to Best Buy and both demo units of the Air 2 had horrendous book spine issues - worse than the one I have at home. I was going to buy an Air 2 to see if I could do better than the screen I had until I saw just how bad it could get on some of these units. Made me wonder how likely it would be to get a good screen from this design.

Screen is perfect on mine. Only issues I have is wifi problems with 5ghz and the sound vibration.

I don't know what Book Spine is and I refuse to figure it out. :)

Can somebody explain/show me what this bookspine looks like? I am set to get mine today and want to be sure its decent, paying a lot of money for this thing.

Also does anybody know of a test site with images I can use to check for dead pixels, lint etc?

Guys I have the slightest book spine. Like less than 5% difference in brightness on less than a half inch on the left border. I feel picky as hell but I can't unsee it. Anyone think I have a chance of getting a flawless screen? Or is a hint of book spine almost guaranteed? I don't think I would have seen if it I hadn't read this thread.

EDIT: Went to the Apple Store and they all look like mine. Most people won't notice I guess. They all had a hint of dim on the far left border. Nothing major, so it seems to be the status quo for Air 2. I think I'll keep mine.

All of the demo air 2 units I saw are darker on the left edge. Uneven backlight FTL.

How annoying is the vibration? Going to get one for the wife for xmas.

Am also thinking of maybe sticking with the original air as I have it and love it but wish they had a 64gb version.

Only issue I'm having is that the bottom left of the display makes a clicking sound when I press on it. But a quick trip to the Genius Bar tomorrow should sort everything out.

Apparently Apple screwed up Wi-Fi across all of their firmware. All of my Apple devices can't hang on to 5GHz anymore and the problem seems to have happened to most people. Both iOS and Mac OS X.

My Air and 6+ haven't skipped a beat on my 5GHz network (iOS 8.1)
That's good. Unfortunately there are several large threads on the Apple discussion boards reporting the issue. The tens of thousands of thread views suggest it is widespread as well. Hope they solve it soon because my devices get about 10Mbps faster for the brief minutes they can get the connection.

Just curious, what router are you using?

An Asus 750N something. Forget the exact model. It is a couple years old. I'm trying to convince the household to get an 802.11AC router, though I don't know if we would actually see a difference. Getting about 45-60mbps on the 5GHZ. Way more variable on the 2.4 setting.

I'm not sure if this is related, but a few years back I started having problems with stuff in general occasionally having network connection problems. It was like a rash, it would be one device one day, and another the next, and then jump to something else. It was rather maddening. To make a long story short, my best guess was that something wasn't properly dealing with DHCP leases, and using IP's it wasn't supposed to be. Given the large number of things I have on my network (about 20 back then, 30 now), I didn't feel like jumping through the hoops to figure out which one it was, and just assigned everything a mac address based IP. Completely cleared the problem up. Haven't received my new iPad yet, but I've not had any connectivity problems with any of our iDevices running current iOS.
