The update completely screwed up my sorting. Some artist names were changed to "unknown", some were changed to other names, and lots of other weirdness abounds. My library is now a complete mess. Wait until 10.0.1.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS UPDATE, SEE ABOVE

let me think now.

I'm going to upgrade.

So - back-up, perform upgrade. Any problems - revert to back-up.

No issues here, not seeing any other users with issues. Sorry for yours, but it sounds like a database corruption of some sort. Did you have lots of (ahem) 'downloaded' content kicking around? Revert to your back-up, try again later.

Can't believe some people are complaining because they can't get rid of the little ping icon in the side bar. Honestly, its not doing anything. If you don't want to use ping, don't use it. The icons doing no harm by just sitting there is it? No.

And as for iTunes 10 being a step down from iTunes 9, its the same to me, just with a slightly different look and a few more non-intrusive features. The dock icon isn't nice but that can easily be changed!

How do you explain Safari then? ;). Apple has Cocoa for Windows no doubt, they'll just never release it publicly.

On topic: as an illogical Cocoa purist, I'm disappointed iTunes 10 isn't Cocoa/64-bit yet, but it does feel faster already, and that's all that matters. I don't care what the icon looks like, it's just a symbol for what I want.

64-bit is irrelevant, how much RAM does this software need to access? it's a database with a simple interface over the top and some video playback. 64 bit isn't needed, and would do little (if anything) to boost performance. However cocoa would be much welcomed, with two versions - one cocoa (for mac) one non-cocoa for windows.

64 bit would be just a side effect of the Cocoa rewrite.

Does iTunes 10 run any faster than the previous version? If I don't care about the social networking, is there any reason to upgrade?

performance is massively improved here, especially launch time (my library is just over 280 GB)

It would, but a lot of people seem to think that moving from 32bit to 64bit is automatically doing to double performance or something? I don't think people really understand the difference or the implication.

If you used OS X for such a long time, you should know the difference between an OS and an app.

Your point is irrelevant and shows a lack of understanding of how much pressure apple apply to get other software developers to follow their interface guidelines. Apple set the rules, apple should follow them. Human User Interface Guidelines as laid out by Apple are about all apps functioning in a common, intuitive way. Apple just broke their own guidelines.

I'm kind of irritated that I can now only choose from "small," "medium," or "large" to display my cover art in Album List view. Laaame!

You make it sound like something has changed or been taken away from you - what options did you have for album art size in album list view in itunes 9?

It's cluttering the sidebar uselessly if I'm not going to use it. What harm is there in having an option to hide the icon ? There's an option to hide all the Genius stuff if people don't want it (I use Genius a lot so I don't hide it).

I can't believe people are complaining about people wanting to remove clutter from their sidebars instead of offering insight into how to do it.

I wonder why they didn't make it so that albums with just a couple of songs don't stretch to show the full cover thumbnail? It makes the formatting seem sloppy.

They do, it's an option. Switch to album list view then go view > always show artwork.

Simples.

Ugly as hell

Agreed - I'd love to be able to edit that side bar, the same as my finder windows. I'd remove everything except for music and movies from the library list, remove ping and purchased from the store and hide genius all together. I can't believe that this new "hide" option that appears doesn't even do that, it's just replacing the disclosure triangle, with the annoying heading still in place. I haven't hidden "Genius", I'm still seeing the word "genius".

The other tweak I'd like to see is the ability to select multiple playlists to delete/move around in folders - one at a time is a PITA! Also would prefer to not have playlists automatically sorted alphabetically - I wanna drag them into an order that suits me, the same as my real world music collection...

horrible

still cant believe they did such a crappy "facelift":
Colors, position of albumtitles in list view, icon... all pretty bad design decisions. :(
Didnt expect that from apple. Thumbs down.

Apple has always used iTunes as a sort of test ground for new OS X UIs.

Hopefully I'm an isolated case. Strange though since I only have a 16GB library and repaired permissions and quit iTunes before installing.

Why did you repair permissions - that's FUD - just run software update as it is meant to be run. It's tinkering and doing things not given by apple in their simple update instructions that cause issues.

back up

update using software update.

that's all there is to it.

1. Carefully cut sticky post it note to approximate size of un wanted screen element.

2. Position as needed.

Agreed - and it's a very bad mistake - this is all that most windows users see of an apple interface. Apple created guidelines, they are good guidelines, they should stick to them. They've really messed up this interface.

I do like the new UI, but I agree with everyone else the there needs to be some color. The side bar should have stayed with the blue background.
