BUT if Sirius or XM were to provide a possible podcast senerio through iTMS I'd be interested.

As both a SIRI and AAPL shareholder, this is exactly what I'm hoping for. The potential for this is bigger than huge. :D

Just more evidence that Apple is definitely a hardware company.

A hardware company that makes the best software and gadgets on the planet so people will buy their hardware.

Or maybe they're a software company that is limited to selling to only 1.6% of the computer market because their software only works on 1.6% of the computers out there.

Which decision would be better for the future of the company...

#1 spend zillions of dollars making the best software with nobody to sell it to (in hopes they'll purchase your hardware)

#2 spend zillions making the best software and make it available on the best hardware (apple) AND the other 98%

Or option #3 announce that your cool awesome hardware also now runs windows if you just have to have it, but it also runs OSX, which runs all the cool mac programs.

I think Jobs is secretely, but completely openly, marketing #3. He announced that the box would run windows, but OSX can't run on wintel boxes. Instantly increasing apple's hardware market to EVERYONE. And, everyone will want one because they can also boot into OSX and run the cool apple stuff.

Hmmmmmm

I'm already down with theforce.net podcast (star wars) and I'd like to find some good political podcasts. I'm really looking forward to this with it all being integrated.

<Insert obligatory whine about how they've probably ignored gapless playback again, when it should have been a core feature no later than iTunes 2.0... Music lovers? Attention to detail? Yeah right!>

i'm pretty excited about 4.9, because it shoves us that much closer to 5. are they just trying not to release 5 or something??? or do they just want 5 to be the video store...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but they could always release iTunes 4.10! :D

How so? Podcasts are just really like Tivo-d radio programs. I despise them. I have no desire to listen to a 30 minute spiel when I can read the same info in less than 5.

Granted it is good for those who commute on the train or carpool, or something like that - but I just don't see podcasts as anything more than a fad.

Regardless of how much music one has, one will always get tired of it. Podcasting might be a fad, but when there are 12 million iPods outhere a fad lasting a couple of years could translate into big business for Apple as it sells more iPods and Apple computers.

Personally I could not for the life of me see how Apple can seriously believe the people would spend over $350 for an iPod. And yet it was a fad that made Apple millions. Steve knows what he is doing and has some very good minds around him. This podcasting may be the mid term fad to keep Apple going until those kick ass Intel systems come out.

Since I don't watch tv and rarely listen to the radio, I already checked out some podcasting sites, but didn't have the time to get more into all of this. I really hope Apple does it nice and easy...

Podcasting

I think podcasting could kill XM satellite radio. Why pay all that money when you can just download your talk radio shows and you already have all your music. I think this could be the reason we haven't seen XM radio in an iPod.

Apple needs to come out with a car stereo.

Bit Torrent + podcast = super cool!

I've tried "amateur" podcasts using jPodder before, and for many podcasts it really sucked big time because of server timeouts (during download) and being unable to download a podcast completely.

Even with a few thousand subscribers to podcasts, the bandwidth requirement of the publisher could shoot up a lot (imagine a 4MB file downloaded every week by just 10000 users - 160GB total bandwidth!!!). I wish they'd integrate something like Bit Torrent into the client and use it to download the podcasts - that would make a lot of sense for amateurs or independent authors who want to get into podcasts without a high cost.

Of course, Bit Torrent isn't infallible - so it could be the primary mode of distribution with a backup mode available in case something were to go wrong. Building such solutions AROUND iTunes would make it worthwhile.

Apple already have something like that with Akamai. Hopefully they are willing to cache podcasts with it.

Some good points are brought up in the article comments...

Apple will likely use it's position in the MP3-player market as leverage to license out iTunes to 3rd party content providers interested in subscription-based podcasts. XM and Sirius are great examples of existing companies that could take advantage of podcasts, but do not currently have the means (financially, technologically, or otherwise) to handle podcasting alone.

Podcast subscriptions are analagous to the current iTMS; Apple sells songs owned by record companies and keeps a small percentage of sales.

It would seem that integrating podcasting into iTunes is a great move for Apple. Let's hope it catches as much as it's hyped to.

If the podcast is released with a Free license then it can be hosted in the Internet Archive (http://www.archive.org) which has lots of bandwith... There are lots of podcasts there (including mine :D)

I'm not sure how much I will listen to podcasts since I don't today. But I do agree with Steve and pretty much everyone else that radio sucks nowadays and clear channel is scum.

Maybe it'll be like the shuffle feature. Never used it before it popped up on the top menu on my iPod, but now it's my favorite way to go.

ALL I really want for 4.9 is the ability to group playlists in folders. That would help a great deal.

I think Steve already mentioned that it would come out in 6 weeks or so. So rumor came from him but it is just that nobody can remember anything but Intel.

Bring it on.......... :p

But there needs to come QT fixes.......both Windows and Mac ;)

I have not tried podcasting or listening to a podcast because it doesn't fill a need for me, like other posters have mentioned. I doubt I'll see many differences in iTunes 4.9 compared to 4.8, if most of them are in the iTMS (which I keep turned off).

I turned iTMS off the moment it appeared, I have disabled the Party Shuffle feature (or whatever it is called), I don't use Smart Playlists and no doubt the Podcasting feature will be yet another piece of over-hyped bloatware that will require a trip to the Preferences to disable. If it weren't for the handy AirTunes feature, I'd be running iTunes 4.0.

iTunes has become a real disappointment. They keep piling on all kinds of crap to appeal to the lowest-common-denominator iPod-wielding airhead. And the rest of us are stuck with it.

Revolutionary, you say? Just plain boring. An update to Calculator is more exciting than this.

I agree with you - my list of features that I use is different from yours:
I have AirTunes, iTunes Music Sharing, Radio, Party Shuffle, the iTMS, Crossfade, Sound Enhancer, Sound Check, and video playback disabled. I use Smart Playlists exclusively in my library - that's really the only iTunes feature I actually use regularly, and the only one other than playlist folders (which hasn't appeared yet) that I'm likely to use for the foreseeable future.

And the obligatory music dinosaurs make their entrance into the thread!

"You damn kids with your features, and your long hair, and your rock music! ::shaking cane::"

If nothing else, the seemingly free "New Music Tuesday" podcasts from the iTMS will make this feature number 1 in my book.

iTunes bloatware??????

Wow, you seem to be a bare necessities-guy! I'm glad you like iTunes! But I'm sure you'd have a blast with WinAmp2.1. Make sure you turn off the "pause" function. Who needs that anyway??
