I have an LG OLED B7 and use the built in Netflix app. Am I missing out on anything by not having the Apple TV 4K? I get Dolby Vision via the Netflix app so not sure why I should get any other device at this point?

You are not missing out on anything so save your cash for now. It's inevitable that Amazon will match Apples catalogue of UHD HDR movies available for rental or purchase. Netflix and Google Play might too.

I only bought Apple TV because I intentionally bought a dumb 4K TV two years ago.

Furthermore Airplay on ATV is crap compared with casting using Chromecast which is instant(As in split of a second) and not prone to being interrupted by Safari browsing or gaming on the iPhone/iPad.

Not true. If you are in the Apple eco-system, then ATV is incredible. Plus if you want to rent or buy 4K DV films iTunes is the winner. Don't bet on Amazon having as many films in 4K as iTunes just because they are a cheap online retail business. iTunes has a lot of talented, experienced staff with connections. Amazon is behind iTunes on picture quality for its film. Heck even its music store is old mp3 in a very low bitrate.

I've been using AirPlay for 6 years+ an i've found it flawless.

Macalicious, you seemed to be a big fan of ATV 4K just yesterday why the change of heart now?

I'm a fan but think it's fair to give alternative perspectives.

When on YouTube on the iPad I press the Airplay button but it takes a few seconds for the video to appear on the TV. On the Chromecast is instant - both my ATV and CS use ethernet. If I browse a website with autoplay video ads, Airplay on the TV gets interrupted.

With the Chromecast regardless of whether I was casting from my Macbook, Samsung or iPad, iPlayer, YouTube or anything, it's instant and never gets interrupted regardless of what else I do on the Device. I could even cast a TV show on iPayer from the Macbook while lazily watching a clip on Youtube in a different tab.

Absolutely. I use voice search constantly, my 16 month old daughter can't get enough of the airport screensaver and the iTunes movie library is beautifully organised. We love it and the Amazon app will be the cherry on top.

My worst experience with Airplay was when my guests wanted to watch a Channel 4 program. Because an ATV app isn't available the program had to be airplayed. I did it using iOS but the program cut anytime I visited a website with autoplay video ads. I had to leave the iPad alone until the program finished which wasn't ideal. Since then I rarely use Airplay.

Meanwhile with the Chromecast, anytime I cast a video, playback+volume controls appear automatically in the notification drawer of all my devices and Chrome browser on the Mac. If I leave the house or my phone dies, my girlfriend can take control on either her phone, the Macbook or iPad.

Casting is very clever and I hope Apple will take inspiration from it in the future.

Bless her! The screensaver are beautifully. They always have a WOW factor with friends when we watch a film, as I'll pause it to make espresso & cake for everyone and of course after 2 minutes, the lovely screensaver fill the room :) Lovely attention to detail :)

Hi Johann, using an Apple product to Android is never a good idea.
Why don't you give the ATV 4K a try? You have 14 days to return it to the Apple Store if you don't like it.
You've got one of the very best TVs on the market, it seems crazy to use cheaper products on it.
Once you've seen a iTunes 4K DV film on it, i think that you'll be pretty blown away!

For me, I won't use Android anything. I detest the things & Google's lack of ethics.

Airplay is not the only option.

From the iPad, using Chromecast, I can cast YouTube, iPlayer, 4oD and other video on demand out of the box without having to install anything on the iPad. The streaming apps show a casting button if you have a Chromecast on the same WiFi network.

Similarly on my Mac I can cast any video playing in Chrome or even the entire tab. It's very seamless and actually, Chromecast work better than iOS devices than iOS devices do with Airplay. I have even streamed downloaded videos from my Mac to the Chromecast, through Chrome. The experience is lightening quick and friction free.

From what I remember you only need the Google Home app if you want to mirror from your iPhone to Chromecast.

You can easily use apple devices and also use chromecast. No problem! Chromecast is superior to airplay and is available on more tv's and devices. Google products give you a lot more freedom and don't lock you down like apple products do.

I really can't believe that you guys are practically selling a Chromecast to a guy instead of a quality ATV.
Now I truly realise that there's no pleasing you guys. Whatever Apple does with the ATV - it's wrong!
I'm truly in shock! I don't think that i'll waste my time on this site again. Android trolls wasting my time!

I think it’s a bit extreme to call other Android trolls for giving a two sided perspective. No one is trying to solicit the ATV nor the Chromecast to anyone. Most devices have drawbacks and making others aware of them shouldn’t constitute as a crime.

Nothing wrong with that. Blind loyalty is a bad thing. I have zero brand loyalty. I'll always do my research before purchasing anything and not stick to any one brand just because. And when a person needs advice one should share all options to them. Apple is certainly not the best at everything. And in some areas they downright suck. If you don't call them out on that how are they ever to improve?
I enjoy my ATV but it's not the best streamer out there(depending on your needs). It cannot meet all my needs so I have to use other devices. There is pleasing me. If apple added support for DTS-MA HD/Dolby TrueHD/Atmos/DTS:X then it would be my perfect streamer. But until they do that(and they won't) then the ATV cannot be my go to streaming device. If a person cares about that then I cannot recommend it to them. If they don't care about that then it would probably be the perfect streamer for them(though overpriced).

I used to be a big fan of Apple. Not a FanBoy, just a fan due to the way they done things - especially with their computers and video production software. I'm a film and documentary producer and editor and software and hardware was second to none. Over the years their focus has somewhat drifted towards other areas.

In regard to the Apple TV - with the relationship Apple has with the film industry and with the know-how it has with video production, they could have done so much more with ATV. Or is Apple.......... No I won't go in to any buts, ifs and/or maybes!

I bought apple tv two days ago and my 2 cents is that Apple TV beat out chrome cast, xbox one x, blu ray dvd and in tv apps (Netflix and Amazon) for picture quality on my LG OLED. I bought a 2nd LG OLED just to really try and compare them and I know I'm just a single user, but I got a much better picture with Apple TV, when it came to streaming.

XBOX one X is complete garbage IMO for 4k quality, and I know I'm slightly bitter because its taken me this long to actually enjoy a 4k show, which is what I am getting from the Apple TV. Why? I believe its because I can edit 4.2.2 etc, edit 60hz etc, with ease or ability to.

I was at the point of giving up on the LG Oled (B and C models) but Im really pleased with Apple TV

I am considering getting the Xbox X next year for native 4k gaming with UHD disc playback as a bonus. But if the image quality of media playback isn't amazing I might buy the cheaper PS4 Pro.

I don't have any other 4K sources to compare my 4K ATV with. Can you elaborate with more detail about how ATV's image quality is better than the Xbox X and built in apps?

I bought the apple tv becuase I wasn't happy with the picture quality from what I had.

My only experience is the LG Oled, but I found the Xbox one x the worst of the products I have tried. Why? One reason is you need to run movies through a blu Ray app. You can't just put the dvd in and watch.
2nd, there is a lot of jitter (in hdr) and sdr.

What is the Xbox good at? When you are playing games, in game mode of hdr or sdr, it's fantastic. But to me, thats not enough of reason, when it should play movies or tv shows just as good. It also doesn't play Netflix in hdr, at least not the lg I'm using.

The Xbox one x is like the retina of laptops. The games are smoother, but that's about it. I'm not trying to knock it, but it's still a video game machine. Just like a 4k 28 inch monitor is still a computer monitor and not a 4k tv.

I find the Chromecast very weak got 4k, especially when I compare it to apple tv. I never liked it before, for 4k, but I really enjoyed Chromecasts setup

If you asked me a week ago, I would of said I'm buying a new tv on boxing day, becuase I'm unhappy with what I'm getting out of the lg oled tvs, for any type of streaming.
Now that I bought the apple 4k, I'm actually content enough to say that I might hold off on another tv and purchase something else instead.

I know it's all still streaming, but there is something good from Apple that I can't seem to get elsewhere, and I wish it wasn't true or I wouldnt of spent money on apple tv, iPhone x, when I wanted to be happy with chromecast, and pixel 2

As for what Apple TV has compared to others, the ability to adjust your settings and see improvements. Maybe that's only new, from the new update, but I'm seeing positives from that.

Thanks for the reply and I certainly makes me feel good about my purchase as I have dodged a few bullets that you have clearly taken.

Does Netflix 4K(non HDR) on the Xbox look and is the quality better or worse than built in TV apps?

I'd say it's equal to the built in tv app.

Not to get on the video game topic but I'd still put the new Xbox miles over the playstation, in terms of what the games look like. I don't game much at all but from when I've personally seen, a new Xbox is the most comparable to a pimped out gaming PC gaming rig.

Well this will no doubt create a heated debate but after this evening WOW!!! 4K UHD Blu-Ray are you retired yet?
Seriously guys, Thursday evening is our movie night after the gym. Anyway I picked up a film called THE LONGEST RIDE from the iTunes 4K HDR selection.
All I can say is WOW! My 4K Apple TV totally came alive. Apart from the incredible stunning picture quality and vibrant colours of this film (lovely watching it in 24p HDR with no judder), I've never ever heard iTunes Dolby Digital 5.1 sound so alive and spectacular! It felt uncompressed - so clear - solid bass with a high quality treble. The whole TV came alive (Panasonic 4K HDR EX700).
We were bowled over by the quality of both picture & sound (often i'm a little disappointed by compressed sound). This iTunes film truly shines in every respect and it was a lovely, sweet film too - not one for the action lovers though.
It truly shows what iTunes, Apple TV and 4K HDR streaming is capable of.
And, it was in the iTunes store sale - I bought it for £2.99.
With quality like this i'll easily say that this lil Apple TV 4K box is the finest investment for any TV.
Well done Apple. You've a true winner here.

I will agree the picture quality is really good for streaming, but that is not my problem with streaming. The audio quality is nowhere near physical media, and that is the main reason I continue to purchase it. Also, microblocking in dark scenes still drives me crazy.

I also noticed you mentioned a 40" TV. That will have a lot to do with your perceived PQ. The bigger your screen gets, the more you will notice imperfections in PQ. My bedroom TVs are around 40", and the PQ does not bother me one bit simply because the size and distance I am from them.

Just watched Despicable Me in dolby vision and the colours on this film are just superb, a fantastic visual treat and was not expecting too much from this for some reason but every scene pops.

I have not watched the 3rd installment yet, but the second one is even better than the first in regards to DV. It is one of the few films where DV has an advantage over HDR10.

I totally agree about the second films visual quality, really astounding and I will be fitting the third film into my schedule soon

I have an LG OLED and my experience is very different. My chromecasts all have ethernet connections so perhaps that's the difference and I don't have an xbox one X but I do have an xbox one, an oppo 203 and of course the TV apps and a ATV. I find video quality to be the same across all of them. I also use an nvidia shield as my main viewing device.
When I initially got the LG I was disappointed in the picture quality. And then I got it calibrated. Night and day difference. The ATV is fine but it's not a much better picture. It's the same picture as the other devices.

I think most people, when referring to better picture quality via aTV mean that due to increased bitrate iTunes Store offers in 4K streaming, looks better than other streaming services.
I would not expect the platform per se to be significantly better.
