this is just lame.

apple giving into at&t.

Or maybe this was part of the bargain apple made years ago that allowed songs to get on the itunes store in the first place as someone mentioned below.

If so, I am glad they were able to create the itunes store then and now and if charging 99cents to hear britnany speares for those folks that really want her to be their ringtone is not that bad of a deal IMO.

I can't believe Apple are now charging their users to use their own music that they bought. Every other mobile phone allows mp3 and aac ringtones to be used.

I, personally, use quotes from movies.

Nickle and dime you is right. What a joke. Just the same as movie execs expecting you to buy a movie on DVD and then buy it again on the iTMS just to watch it on your iPod.

I want to buy a movie once, a music track once and be able to use it as I see fit. Not to be nickle and dimed every time I want to play the same content in a slightly different way.

EDIT: A lot of you are saying that 99cents it OK for a ringtone, but this isn't the issue. It's 99cents to use a song that you've ALREADY BOUGHT on your iPhone. While every other phone allows you to do this for FREE. It's a rip-off, a joke.

No worries!

Don't worry friends. Some clever hacker/genius will find a way to install ring tones for free, its a computer just remember that. Any electronic device can and will eventually be hacked.

Ummm, my friend just got a new cell and his only allows ringtones that were purchased. Copyright issues, not to mention the revenue ones.

The issue is that you paid to listen to it, now you have to pay again to use it as a incoming call alert (totally different type of use).

Welcome to the New World Order - a world governed by money and global corporations....

Amazing. Some people will NEVER be satisfied.

How about this. Since the iPhone and Apple suck so bad, how about YOU go and use whatever you find acceptable! The complaining is ridiculous.

Look at this image from todays FAQ - there are 8 categories and an additional orange icon in the blue side panel under the iPhone. (there were 6 in yesterdays video)

Awesome find.

Perhaps a tab for Apps?

As many have pointed out, it's still cheaper than buying ringtones from other carriers.

Funny, my phone (a brand new Sony Ericsson K810i) allows me to do this absolutely for free. As do all other phones, at least in the EU/UK.

I take the MP3 or AAC that I own, throw it over to the phone and tell it to use it as a message or ring tone. The same process on the iPhone costs me a buck. Nice.

Up till now I always used Nokia phones and you can use ANY .mp3 as your ringtone. It can be a song, sound or whatever you can come up with. And its FREE. I would never ever buy a ringtone! And shame on apple if they are gonna charge for it:mad:
Yes, you can do it, but if you are using mp3s of commercially distributed music, it is likely not a legal use of those files, depending on where you live.

Here in the US, that's changing.... why give for free when you can charge for it???

Is the ripping of CD's illegal now? This whole DRM thing is getting out of control. It's no wonder people pirate, to use content legally is becoming prohibitally expensive.

Have to buy CD, have to buy MP3, have to buy ringtone. Are they going to charge people every time they listen to music next?

Hmm

So I've got a question. On my current AT&T phone (Sony ericsson Z525a) I found a bunch of songs in my iTunes that were unprotected - pulled them into quicktime pro, pulled out the part I wanted, saved them as a .wav and encoded them into .mp3 with adion (or something like that) so basically everyone I talk to on a fairly consistent basis has their own ring tone. My question is will I just be able to load those 15-30 second .mp3 files I've made into iTunes and use them as ringtones. I've already gone through a lot of time doing all of this...

Or notes :)

(I found this this morning when I woke up and could not post about it until I got to work... hate that LOL)

Or files?

I am still unsure how we can drag over text and pdfs (ebooks?) over to the iphone. I mean we have seen them in emails but what is the process to drag over the ebook I just bought or a 12 page report I export out to a PDF to read on the way to a client etc...

or nudie pics! oh wait... iphoto..

Reportedly, the new version of iTunes will allow you to convert any song that is available on iTunes into a ringtone with the "Make into Ringtone" feature.

Can someone provide a link to where this is mentioned?

maybe, but you'll have to pay if you want to do it legally i think.
