Funny, my phone (a brand new Sony Ericsson K810i) allows me to do this absolutely for free. As do all other phones, at least in the EU/UK.

I take the MP3 or AAC that I own, throw it over to the phone and tell it to use it as a message or ring tone. The same process on the iPhone costs me a buck. Nice.

okay, everyone, please quit the FUD.

I'm in my T-Mobile SDA phone right now, under phone sounds, in the "ring tones" box, clicking on it to see my choices, MY MP3's DO NOT APPEAR....

Get a grip, you will be charged for ringtones here on out...

so what if you want to use a song that is not on itunes as a ringtone?
i used to do that with my last nokia.

with all this hubbub. remember that when listening to your ipod you will hear the music fade out and then your ringtone music fade in?? sounds confusing. i'll probably stick with a obvious alert.

Must be a USA thing, here in the EU we don't let companies trample us quite as much. Every new phone allows you to use any MP3 you put on it as a ringtone. If you can listen to it in the media player why can't you listen to it as a ringtone? It's so silly.

What makes you think MP3's have to be music? They can be anything, even someone talking. I use movie quotes as mine.

w8!

How can it be a copyright issue if you own a cd, rip the song and then put on your phone as a ringtone?

I'm thinking that, of all the restrictions on the iPhone, this may be the easiest to bypass. Technically we're not supposed to be able to extract music from our iPods, but that's quite easily bypassed. Depends on how they implement it, I suppose.

Not every new phone is capable of this..

Here are prices from Sprint.com's "Digital Lounge"

That website is awful to look at. Why cant they split the file names up into columns. This is the reason why the iPhone will succeed. Apple is the only phone manufacturer who makes things easy to use and read.

Why would I pay 99 cents to download the song, and then 99 cents to make it a ringtone?

If that is the case, forget it! I don't need a ringtone that badly... And I echo the poster from page 1, I'm digging the built-in ringers so far.

BUT - the horror, everyone will know that I have an iPhone in my pocket. I hope I can move some of these dorky midi files onto the iPhone to use them as my ringtone. j/k :D

I really hope that Apple isn't charging for ringtones. Not that I mind.

I enjoy making my own ringtones, usually is a challenge to create masterpieces in thirty seconds.

Complaining about Apple charging you for things that are free on competing products is a perfectly valid whine.

Some people on these forums really do drink too much Kool-Aid. What if Apple said you couldn't use pictures as wallpaper unless you paid a buck to "convert" them? After all they may be copyrighted images, same as music.

...what if...

...they tried to nickel and dime us to death but didn't let them. just because some conpanies charde $3 a ringtone doesn't really make $0.99 great! on my sprint pda phone i can make any mp3 or wmw a ringtone! so why don't we all just boycott this ripoff and show them. yeah, lets stick it to the man!

And how can it be a copyright issue if other phones can do it? If it's illegal then no phone would do it.

i would imagine that it's to do with the deal apple did with the record companies when the agreed to sell their music in the itunes store.

lol, I agree. And is it really necessary to put the word, "MUSIC" after each one?

I really hope for those that choose the Apple option that they will be able to set their own in and out points. Some of the music ringtones I've heard cut off in the most awkward way or in the middle of a phrase...hopefully Apple will add a way for the user to adjust the ringtone so it sounds good in a loop.

What about the music I bough (be it CD or from iTunes store). As mentioned earlier it should be completely acceptable to use that as a sound (would be nice on the Mac itself, too. Am waiting for that since a looooong time)

I make my own ringtones in Audacity, then upload them to my Motorola L6 via BlueTooth. It's so convenient (not to mention infinitely cheaper), I'll never buy another ringtone again, even if that means using the default ringtones on the iPhone.

Fine, don't let iTMS music be used as rintones. But I don't own any iTMS tracks, all my music is ripped from CDs (that I bought), and I use some MP3's I recorded from movies (that I bought on DVD) as ringtones. Why can't I use these?

More details

When a song is selected for conversion, a "garageband like" interface comes up to allow you to pic the 30 second clip you want.

same here. i agree with you. i guess because the record companies have insisted as a condition of agreeing to sell through the itms.
