It had better be cocoa. I still can't believe that iTunes, Apple's flagship software product, is still based on legacy code. They have had more than 5 years to switch over to cocoa. I know, I know, writing a whole application from scratch isn't easy (or could they use some existing code), but they need to get on this.

If iTunes 8 isn't cocoa based, I will be very disappointed. I don't like carbon apps very much.

What's the difference between cocoa and carbon?

Quick question, how do I fix this problem that I'm having everywhere? (look at pic #1)

My 1.8 g5 iMac booted for 25 minutes or so after installing the software, then i finally forced a restart. After that, it still won't boot. I'm at a loss for now, I'll have to work on this in the morning.

Help! One of these updades killed my dock! It's completely gone now, I've tried repairing permissions, killing it, command-option-D, deleting com.apple.Dock and the dock db, and yet the Dock still doesn't appear. It seems to try to launch and then crash, because in activity monitor it appears and disappears quite frequently.

Cocoa or Carbon

How do you know if the App you are using is a Cocoa or Carbon? I know programs written in Cocoa will run faster, but other then that how do you tell?

Hugh

I know this sounds like a windows answer - but reboot. I have had that happen to me also - each and every time it was because I removed a firewire device or USB device without ejecting it - dont know what your cause was though.

Thanks, I'll try that.

EDIT: Rebooted and I still have the same problem.

have they fixed the link b/w front row and iTunes?
For example, when you click the menu button on the remote to enter FR, does it sto the music? or does it continue playing like leopard days?

Sorry to break the news to you, but the link between Front Row and iTunes isn't broken. It's just plain not there anymore!

In previous versions, Front Row was simply a fancy front end for other applications. When you played music, it started iTunes and it was iTunes that was really playing the music. When you played a DVD, it was really DVD Player operating in the background, not Front Row, that was playing your DVD.

The new Front Row is self-sufficient. It now plays all the media itself instead of relying on those other applications. And unfortunately Front Row does not duplicate all of the features of those other programs. Therefore, if you have music playing in iTunes and activate Front Row, the music stop playing because iTunes is no longer the application used to play music (otherwise you might have both iTunes and FR playing different songs at the same time!). This is also the reason AirTunes no longer works with FrontRow...because it's not iTunes playing the music. You might want to look into AirFoil and see if that will do what you want.

I haven't checked recently to see if any updates fixed it, but the biggest omission is that since DVD Player is no longer the app used to play DVDs, Front Row doesn't output the digital audio when playing discs! iTunes stopping is inconvient. No digital audio is a loss of functionality and quality.

Edit: In case anyone thinks otherwise, I agree that it was a piss-poor decision on Apple's part to not include those features in Front Row. I was just pointing out that nothing is "broken." It works as designed... unfortunately.

i was waiting for someone to mention this. frankly, i'm surprised it doesn't annoy more people. i commented on it the last time they updated FR.

why doesn't Apple get it? separating FR from iTunes is so frustrating. does anyone know of some must-have functionality that this redesign brings? how long before they change it back???

i dont want to speak for everyone. does anyone on here like the new setup? do you see the benefit of it?

Do people still use MP3s?

Every time I hear people, especially Apple users, talk about MP3s I cringe.

People really need to acknowledge or become educated about the difference between AAC files and MP3 files. And there is a huge difference.

Basically MP3 is an older technology, not as good as AAC (AAC at 128 kb/s is superior to MP3 and the file size is smaller and the same is true for 256 kb/s (some actually claim that an AAC file at 128 kb/s is superior to an MP3 file at 256 kb/s from Amazon).

Apple by default uses a superior encoder. So if you buy music from iTunes or rip your on CDs, the default is AAC.

Please, enough of this MP3 crap.

Wow that's BS. I miss the old Front Row so much. The new one sucks terribly.

In balance, I prefer FR 2.

I found it annoying in Front Row 1 when music would continue playing when I exited it. If I want to listen to music while doing something else on my Mac, I'll use iTunes. I would prefer for music to continue playing while you're browsing through the non-music menus and only stop if you select something else, but this may be difficult to implement since each of the top level menu items is a separate Front Row plugin (in /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/PlugIns/)

Also, I rsync my iTunes library from my main Mac to an external drive attached to my TV-connected Mini, but with FR1 keeping iTunes running, I would often get podcasts downloaded twice unless I went in to the Mini and unsubscribed after every sync. Now, I never have iTunes running on the Mini so don't have this problem.

The only thing I prefer about FR1 was you could see album and movie art when connected to shared iTunes libraries. I really don't know why Apple hasn't fixed this yet. I was hoping this update would do it since as far as I can see, it works with the Apple TV. If they ever fixed this, I would just share my iTunes Library on my main Mac to the Mini under the TV rather than maintain a local copy.

This update fixed an issue with my MacBook Pro that made Front Row unusable for listening to music (it would become entirely unresponsive after playing through a song, forcing a restart). So kudos to Apple for fixing that!

Front Row still has this glitch in the gradient on the GUI. Anyone else have this?

Force quit

None of the bugs I'm seeing were fixed

* If I preview a music video in the iTunes Store, pause it, close iTunes window and then quit it using the menu, iTunes halts and I have to force quit.
Does anyone have this problem?

* I cannot watch movies with subtitles in Front Rows. The Perian guys say it's a Leopard FR bug (that never gets fixed)

how about an update allowing people to enjoy movie rentals in HDTV on their mac's or pc's as rentals, just like on the apple tv??

Thank you! Someone was reading my mind. Because I don't have an TV why can't I get the HD content from iTunes? As a matter of fact HD movie downloads should be part of the Front Row update but oh well.:(

just to clarify.

AAC/MP4 is not necessarily better than MP3. It's all about the encoder and the encoding scheme. All MP3's are not created equal either, different encoders and settings produce completly different results. It's all based on psychoacoustics and tweaking sound based on algorithms that recreate the human psychoacoustic model.

Just because something is newer doesen't make it better. MP3 is an older standard and a more understood standard. AAC files could theoretically sound better as the scheme is newer, but it's potential has not been fully explored as much as MP3's.

Think of it like a gasoline engine. We've used them for years and can use them to their maximum potential. Now compare it to an alternative fuel source such as hydrogen. It's something that contains greater potential but at the moment is not exploited as well. Let's see a hydrogen car with 500HP, and maintain stability and reliability.

At 128 AAC files have been proven to sound better than an MP3 at the same bitrate in double blind testing. But compare that to a -v2 encoded LAME MP3, or even -alt preset standard and those AAC files sound like garbage. Check out http://www.hydrogenaudio.org. I still use MP3's I can tell the difference between the low bitrate AAC's, and the sound bother's the crap out of me. Listen to the cymbals or higher frequencies in a lot of stuff, a lot of it get's washed out when it starts coming through your speakers. Most people don't even notice but a trained ear can pick it out easy. I can usually even tell what bitrate and what format a song is in just by hearing it play. I think that's amazing but these guy's at hydrogenaudio basically take this to an entirely new level.

Anyway just wanted to clarify that. I think it'll be awhile before any standard is proven as the best. MP3's are just the most widespread, and therefore the most referenced.

BTW YEAH I used to love Winamp, cuz it was small and worked fast, but can't use it due to my iphone on my PC. (On my mac i obviously use iTunes).

On windows and mac that thing eats up WAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much memory and runs to sluggishly. They really need to streamline their approach, make it more versatile for people's ever increasing library sizes.

You either want the iPod or updated apps....you, apparently, can't have both at Apple.

iTunes 7 is lasting a looong time.

Anyone thing v8 will be a BIG change? Cocoa maybe?

A Cocoa release would be interesting. I'm sure iTunes 8 would be a complete interface change or high refinement. It would be nice for Apple to become more developer friendly and allow iTunes to have skins and create a plug-in model for iTunes.

iTunes 8 should also support Core Animation in allow a user custom make visuals to flow with their music. Whether they use photos, video, or custom artwork.

iTunes 8 should be about customization.

I can understand that. Pretty legitimate if that's the way you do things.

It just annoys me, because I like hooking my MBP up to my LCD tv when friends are over and it's like a jukebox. we can listen to music and everyone can see what it is, what album it's on, see the album art, etc. apple made the interface so attractive, you want to show it off.

but if one of us wants to change the playlist, or use the computer to look up something real quick, the music stops.

i actually think it'd be neat if you could stream FR to the external monitor, while using your machine normally. that would be something.

iTunes still stutters

All videos still suffer from a one-time stutter at the 9 or 10 second mark in iTunes. All videos play fine in both Front Row and Quicktime.

LONG reboot after installing, erratic interface and network behavior after reboot.
