Am I the only person who's lost the ability to create ringtones of (the small subset of) iTunes-purchased songs with 7.7.1?

Way to break the olive branch.

He'd have to be a total idiot to give up a sweet software engineering job at apple for the sake of posting here. If apple found out that one of their people posted in a forum like this, that person would get fired instantly. This is a fact which apple makes clear to new hires before they even see their desks on day one.

App version checking still buggy

After installing iTunes 7.7.1 I did a sync/backup of my iPhone, then did an app version check in iTunes and on the iPhone. iTunes said there were updates for 11 of my apps, and iPhone said all apps were up to date. For one of the apps, iNetwork Test, iTunes said that version 1.0.1 was available, but the version on the iPhone is 1.0.2! Also, on the "Applications" page iTunes says there is 1 update available, but when I click on the arrow to display the update it shows updates for 11 apps.
Also, most apps do not have an "about" option to display the version number... this should be a mandatory requirement.

Roy,

Considering that Apple does not store backup copies of old versions of applications locally on user's computers when they release updates (i.e. through software update), why would they choose to go this route with iTunes? What happens when we get the bigger applications like Navigation apps with map data stored in them approaching the 2GB size, for example? Updated apps for now seem to be the same file size (i.e. not updates, but entirely new copies), and thus would begin wasting a LOT of space. Why not instead promote the use of the Time Machine feature built in on Macs for those who have Leopard installed, and allow backup copies be managed by Time Machine the same way as everything else in Time Machine. For Windows users and Non-Leopard users, the current solution implemented (copies of every version) would seem like a good idea. But better yet, let users have the option to keep old version backup copies by creating a toggle the iTunes preferences. This would seem like the most logical implementation as it seems as though a lot of people are crying out for a change, as I myself do not agree with the multiple-copies backup solution currently in place.

Seriously, there should be an option for users in the preferences. Let the user decide if they want iTunes to keep every version of all of their apps.

Anyone else having Restore issues post 7.7

I am running 2.0 and installed 7.7 and decided to do a full restore hoping to mop up how dirty my iPhone has been acting with regards to apps (not sync'ing, crashing, etc).

To keep it short, while trying to restore my iPhone was sent into a loop of preparing software, restore from backup?, hang for hours, restore from backup?, etc.

I had to reset my iPhone several times due to HOURS of status bar hang (restore has NEVER taken that long) and while my phone is working the restore process was never FULLY done cleanly as it was in the past. I only have so much time in the evening and before I go to work to restore/backup/restore/hang.....

Just curious if anyone is having these issues.

I'm having similar issues. I decided to restore my 3G due to the same problems you had.
Since updating to 7.7.1, the 10 or so second freeze before iTunes will do anything when I connect my 3G became 25+ seconds.
Then the restore from backup that I'd just updated took forever, and wouldn't complete. I had to forcibly disconnect it by pulling the cable. Only then after about 90 seconds did it say restore complete. I still had to go in and replace all the data on it with a sync after that.

Deleting apps from the phone takes an incredibly long amount of time.

Didn't get a chance to read through all the replies. Did anyone notice that the app folder got moved out of the music folder like it was when they first released the app store? Also, on apps that have been updated, there are more than one copy stored on your computer. One for each version. Seems as they don't remove the original when you download an update. They simply append a 1,2,etc depending on how many times you downloaded an app. Seems inefficient and space wasting if you ask me.

This is exactly what happened to me. The weird thing is that even though it hangs and you THINK it never finishes the phone works and it APPEARS that the Restore was complete.

Maybe I am OCD but I am not satisfied with the fact that it just happens to be working after basically hanging and crashing during the restore.. not to mention asking me AGAIN if I want to restore from backup when I go to sync...

I haven't downloaded the Itunes update and now I wonder if I should. I'm not really having any problems with my Touch, should I just keep running on Itunes 7.7 and 2.0 on my touch? Or should I update Itunes?

If your Touch is working well I would hold off for a bit. I love my Apple products (hardware and software) but recent software for iPhone has not been impressive.

Thank you, after reading this thread I think I agree.

I would wait. Hopefully Apple will release a new firmware for the iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0.1 that will fix the bugs and make it more compatible with iTunes 7.7.1

Thanks for the clarification..

I am running the most current version of iTunes, 7.7.1 and having the issues I mentioned.

My initial backup wasn't any longer than usual. BUT...the new iTunes decided to copy all my apps to my phone. I was using the Sync Selected Apps option, and I discovered belatedly that iTunes had decided on its own to select every app!

I am an Apple Engineer on the iTunes team, and this behavior is as designed. The overwhelming majority of applications on the App Store are from 3rd-party (not Apple) developers. If the maker of the software changes something between versions, and you like the old way better, you still have the old one to go back to.

Hi Roy,
Please come see me in my office.

You can tell already? Wow it must be a good one. :p

This is a major stability update. iTunes compatibility with the iPhone 3G has been terrible.

Fixed issues that I can document from this one small update:

1. Connecting iPhone to iTunes: Previously spinning beachball for 3 seconds before recognition, Now perfect, near instant connection.

2. Syncing: Previously, slow, occasionally time out or crash, updates would not always be in synce. Now, all of those problems appear fixed. Syncing is faster, smoother and more reliable. Updates are syncing properly.

...To all the people who say "have less applications", or "cancel the backup" seriously do either of those options sound like ones we should have to be resorting to? This is not a windows machine here. Having less applications defeats the purpose, cancelling the backup takes manual intervention and again, defeats the purpose.

right on, right on!

Here's an idea for Apple

We all have our phones plugged in at night to get a charge while we sleep (well most of us probably do, some may plug their phone into the wall charger instead)...

So, why not give us the option of "scheduling" an automatic backup each night at a certain time, say 2am?

That way, it can take as long as it wants, as long as it's done by the time I wake up in the morning...

Problem solved.

By the way, 65 meg download for the updated itunes. What a waste of your own bandwidth money Apple. Not to mention the fact that this application is looking more and more like it was written by an old friend I used to have named Bill.

Resets Applications

Just a heads-up (may not affect ALL users). When I updated iTunes this morning, it reset ALL of my Apps to sync with my iPhone. Just a warning to possibly do a manual sync first and check that all of your Apps are not check marked to install. I had about 8 that I have decided not to use but do not want to delete yet.

Its not a big thing but still a pain in the butt and should not have changed my settings with the install.

Good Luck

P.S. Back Up still takes 10 years to do...SLOWWWW

7.7.1 made a big difference to my Touch. The last 4 mornings when I plugged it into my desktop it would take about 8.5 minutes to mount in iTunes with 7.7.0. This morning after the upgrade it took less than 20 seconds.
