my update and iphone 3g sync went fine..

about the same time as pre-update.. (pre was 7.7, update was 7.7.1)

still can't update sketches to 1.1 though :( itunes never finds the update!!

oh, and some of my icons were "re-arranged" on my iphone which was a bit annoying..

I don't know why everyone is complaining so much about the backups. It does not stop you from using your or synching your phone at all, because you can always cancel the backup (From iTunes, or by sliding your finger across the phone) and then continue on with your sync. Also, if your backups are taking a long time, try opting to have less applications installed on your phone. I mean, how many different versions of a flashlight app do you really need? My backups took about 30 minutes when I had 3-4 pages of free apps on the phone. I narrowed it down to just the apps I actually use, and now backups take around 10 minutes or less.

I remember that originally people thought that backing up the phone so often was a bug. It's not, so you need to get used to it. See http://www.apple.com/iphone/tips/#troubleshooting_creatingbackups :apple:

Of note... "iTunes only makes one backup each time you connect, even if you sync multiple times before disconnecting."

I am an Apple Engineer on the iTunes team, and this behavior is as designed. The overwhelming majority of applications on the App Store are from 3rd-party (not Apple) developers. If the maker of the software changes something between versions, and you like the old way better, you still have the old one to go back to.

Thanks for posting here, Roy. Would it be possible to post a list of fixes in 7.7.1. How does one restore an old version of an app? (by the way, it's often really difficult to figure out the version of an iPhone, either on the iPhone or in iTunes).

Are app syncing problems fixed? (often apps on the phone aren't synced back to iTunes, or iTunes says there are no AppStore updates but the AppStore on the iPhone says there are, etc)

MDCrashReportTool still crashes

Every time I connect my iPod touch MDCrashReportTool quits unexpectedly.

I thought they would have fixed this.

Wow, this is awesome!

It found 13 apps that needed updates, despite telling me none of them did a few minutes before I installed the update.

And it gives all the app icons rounded edges, too. The square ones were annoying me. :p

Installed the update, but now my iTunes won't open (application not responding) and I have to force-quit it.

I'll try restarting, see if that helps..

I am stilling having problems with iTunes. The Applications folder shows 2 updates available and when I see the updates there are 17. Even after updating them there are still 17 updates. I still cannot install all the updates at once as it states that my itunes credit need refreshing, even after I log out of the store and back in again. As for syncing, its still as slow as hell (10 Apps takes about 15-20 minutes to sync).

I lost my NYTimes app, and it won't reinstall it. :(

I've tried on the phone and on iTunes, and it keeps giving me an error. Too bad that's an app I use all the time, instead of a flashlight/free game app.

iTunes 8 please... I am able to stand iTunes less and less as more is added. It reminds me of Windows; it doesn't seem to have that great of a foundation, yet features are added faster than bugs are fixed.

I'm betting (well not really) that we'll see a new faster version of iTunes released right alongside the next OS X release called Snow Leopard. Along with the OS X update, Apple stated that they would release QuickTime X. QuickTime is an integral tie-in with iTunes. Both of which are written in Apple's legacy Carbon (or is it Cocoa) code. I get the two confused all the time.

I'm sorry, but Apple is REALLY screwing up in quality control these days, and iTunes is fast becoming the buggiest Mac program out there right behind any of the AOL client software releases! And that's NOT good company to be in either!

Now, iTunes says I have 7 application updates to do, but when I click on Update Applications, i get 36 UPDATES!!!

Then after those are done, iTunes STILL SAYS i NEED TO DO 1 MORE UPDATE!
I click again, and, guess what, 36 UPDATES WANT TO DOWNLOAD!

And then, it GETS WORSE. Now all my application sync prefs are GONE and it wants to put EVERY SINGLE APP I downloaded just to try out on the iPhone! Obviously, I tried out LOTS of free apps I don't want on my iphone.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

This is going to be a total royal pain Apple. I think I'll choose to NOT re-SYNC my iPhone now.
I'm afraid of what will happen to be honest with all this buggy behavior, not to mention I'm gonna have to go through and uncheck all of the try-out apps I downloaded, some of which who's names I don't even recall.
Geez, what screwups.

Who do they have writing the iTUNES program now?
It's starting to seem like monkeys throwing paint at canvas pretending to be artists IMHO. :(

1 hour 30 minute backup and counting. What the hell is it doing? Why can't this do incremental backups?
Given that it's presumably not backing up media, just sms messages, settings, apps etc, that should come to about 300Mb MAX, over USB should copy in about a minute. Something else is clearly going on, other than a straight copy of data. I appreciate the need for a backup, but when they take this long, I am going to end up with no backups ever as I'll have to cancel them. If I just want to grab a new episode of a podcast on my way out the door to work, it takes about 2 hours?

To all the people who say "have less applications", or "cancel the backup" seriously do either of those options sound like ones we should have to be resorting to? This is not a windows machine here. Having less applications defeats the purpose, cancelling the backup takes manual intervention and again, defeats the purpose.

Updated to 7.7.1 .. noticed that all the apps icons are rounded now (like everyone else said).. plugged in my iphone.. started the back-up process.. took the same amount of time.. it still does that thing where if u deleted an app on your phone but not on your itune..it reinstalls the app back onto your phone (pretty annoying) .. once it's done synching.. it automatically restarted my phone... .. .. thats pretty much my 7.7.1 experience.

Hmmm.. i haven't had that trouble of deleting apps off the iPhone. They haven't re-synched at all. I also haven't put too many apps on my iPhone. My iPhone doesn't crash nearly as much as others that i see on these threads. It must be the apps causing it. I do suffer with slow texting though.

I for one don't have a problem with this behavior of keeping both old and new versions as they don't seem to take up much space on my Mac, but the REST of the bugginess of the program is completely unacceptable as I stated above in great detail and is a complete pain.

The current state of iTunes to me acts like a typical buggy Windows program, not what I expect from Apple. I would suggest getting back to work and not wasting your time posting on rumor & discussion forums.

This update is a joke, both iTunes 7.7 AND 7.7.1 :(

I guess Apple's priority on these patches is how to hammer the hackers and seal the cracks, rather than making a good app.

1. you are assuming users know best about the apps, and why don't you assume developers knows best? does iTMS offer release note of each app? what if there are security fixes in new version and users don't take that into consideration?

2. if Itunes isn't capable of doing these things, how about write another clean app? rather than cram everything together, and make each of the function worse?

3. Does iTunes team ever thought about reconstruct the app such that users can pick which modular to install? I mean, for users like me who only use it as music player manager, why should I spend extra HDD and performance to get modular for MM, iPod, iPT, ATV?

4. Does iTunes team ever thought about issue partial download when upgrade? My home internet isn't fast, every single 0.0.1 update asking for 40MB download is just not very nice.

This update fixes the long 5 minute wait for my iPhone to appear in iTunes. FINALLY!
