Besides the Gapless Playback, the one thing that makes this iTunes update worthwhile is the ability to edit Season Numbers for TV Shows. I have a number of TV shows that I downloaded before iTMS automatically populated this field. This made sorting on my ViPod a nightmare! Thanks Apple... :D

Still trying to get use to the matte color look though....

yeah i had that problm with seasons i got using handbrake. does cover flow seem to take awhile to load for anyone else?

this new store along with the new ipods and iTV, has set the bar for the microsoft iPod rip off extremely high and every player that comes after it-

i am not trying to be a microsoft basher but all i am saying is that while the movie and game selection is limited, no other service or player or service has been able to provide as many great features as the ipod/ apple media store does

What do I paste into Safari? And how are you tracking what iTunes is doing?

Don't paste anything into Safari. I was just showing some of the requests that iTunes makes when you ask for art. When you request the art - a timed key is given back to you so that only you can download it and only for a limited time. Once you are given the key you can connect to server with any browser and get the art.

How did I get these requests? I ran a packet sniffer (ethereal in this case) and filtered out the HTTP traffic (the protocol iTunes uses obviously). Once there, you can see the HTTP request headers which contain the URLS that iTunes is accessing. This is exactly how the clever folks who wrote the iTunes art extractor tools (back before Apple created this key based download stuff) reverse engineered it.

Now - how to fix the ones that don't work. I have no idea honestly. I have tried 10 ways to Sunday to get Dave Matthews - Crash to work - and I can't. Everything on my track information matches the information on the iTunes store - and no dice. Yet I _know_ they have the album art. So my guess is that they are using another service (CDDB?) to get the ISDN of the CD using the above mentioned tags. From that, they are getting their album art.

If we knew what they were using to search - we could match the information to the source. Sadly, we do not.

Wow, you can now tag your own videos (not purchased on iTunes) as TV shows!!!!

this is awesome! now all the tv shows I import from my El Gato EyeTV can be tagged properly as TV shows, and they show up in the appropriate menue on my iPod and FrontRow!

Some people have mentioned the change of icon color from green to blue, I don't mind the color, but I'm not a fan of the actual icon.
Since it's iTunes Store and not iTunes Music Store, shouldn't Apple try and come up with an icon, that represents all the different kinds of media?

Was about to download it when I read this article that its plagued with bugs-is it true?

Although a small percentage of those posting about the new software reported no problems at all, many agreed that Apple needed to address some of the issues being reported in forums, which are attracting thousands of views.

Quite the opposite in reality then, I would say.
Seems very natural to me that those with problems will post their complaints while those with no problems won't have anything to post about in the first place.
My iTunes works fine and better than ever in all respects.
Coverflow does not load but neither did the previous standalone application on my system.

Album artwork makes every song file bigger?

Does the artwork feature increase the size of every single song file by adding the art to each file?

Just want to know before I allow iTunes to reduce the number of songs I can fit on my Nano.

Otherwise - nice update, but they need to pay a bit more attention to those aesthetics for the next imo.

I would like to point out a few things I'd like to see in future releases:
  1. Add a preference of no crossfade on gapless tracks

  1. This already exists. Check 'Get Info' and turn on 'gapless album' this is distinct from iTunes ability to recognise which tracks should play as gapless.

I tried importing a mp4 file today and I couldn't get the bloody thing to play nor import! I guess they will send out an update soon to fix the little quirks.

Anyone noticed this:

"Multiple Libraries

Build your collection over multiple libraries, and keep them on different hard drives to save space."

http://www.apple.com/au/itunes/overview/

Explain how!? :(

Someone said you press Alt/Option when opening iTunes...but it doesn't work for me.

How come when I updated to version 7 my icon didn't change?

Have you opened it since the upgrade? The dock sometimes takes more time to update icons.

And I just realized that I automatically capitalize the next letter after I type something that starts with an 'i'. I just did it with iCons.

Did you have a custom icon...? I had that, which I'd just pasted onto the icon in the Get Info window of the iTunes.app, and didn't get to see the nice blue one until I opened the Get Info again and deleted the custom icon (I used the iTunes 1 icon). :)

Thanks aswitcher. I played around and its alt+command.

And its pretty crap. It looks like you what it does is creates a new iTunes folder. And you have to open and close iTunes (using the alt+command) if you want to switch between libraries. i.e. its like having 2 accounts on your machine.

So im very disappointed :(

I mean its been two days now and I've restarted and it still didn't update the icon, obviously not really a big deal...but i like to have all the bells and whistles

Like others have said, you probably have a custom iTunes icon.

I'm sorry for your problems and I'm not saying iTunes 7 does not have any bugs or couldn't do with some fixes: I'm just debating the validity of an article that brands the update "a lemon" on the basis of the sentence I quoted which is statistically and by pure logic simply untrue.

This said, my videos would neither play nor import until I updated Quicktime to 7.1.3: after the update everything is very smooth and playback is way better than the last version.

The bit about multiple libraries is very misleading on Apple's part: you cannot have multiple libraries and span them across different drives. Each library needs to reside on a single drive and, as other posters have explained, you need to quit and relaunch to change library. Which makes this a non-feature IMHO.

You are right the Amazon UI sucks but Amazon did one thing that is very important to me. They offered rentals. I would much rather rent a movie for $3.99 from the Amazon store than buy a movie for $14.99 from the Apple one. If I want to watch it more than once Ill go get the DVD for less with all of the nice casing and extra features. I'm not really sure who in their right mind would pay these prices for content without physical media and I can't see people ripping all of their DVDs into iTunes either so it seems to me that this feature is dead in the water and so is the streaming media device. On-Demand from Verizon Fios if you have it in your area has this beat hands down. So does Netflix, Amazon, the video stores and buying the actual DVD from Walmart or Bestbuy for that matter IMO...

Most people renting are probably already using Netflix, which is virtually impossible to compete with, so why bother.

I think the price isn't too bad, at least for new releases. You're not going to get anywhere close to $12.99 for most movies. And I probably will rip all my DVD's, I've started already.

Not completely true. Previous 5G doesn't get the new search function.

File organization

The folks at Apple have apparently decided that new TV shows you download after installing iTunes 7 will be placed in a folder called "TV Shows". Problem is, old TV shows that used to be filed under the title of the show are still in those old folders.

So I now have for example some episodes of The Colbert Report in iTunes Music > The Colbert Report and others will be in a folder called iTunes Music > TV Shows > The Colbert Report. Couldn't they have kept the old system or moved TV shows that were already in iTunes before you update into the TV Shows folder?

This in a addition to the fact that episodes are apparently going to run about 250 MB a piece instead of about 100 MB each, meaning longer downloads and me having to move them from my laptop to my Power Mac more often due to a lack of space...And I will run out of space more quickly there eventually.

Why couldn't they give people the choice of which video quality they want? [/whining]

Update them using get-info.

Apple uses the titles and information from the iTunes Store. they have some artwork for albums which are not in the store.

on some compilations, the simplest way to MAKE it work say it isnt a compilation and then get artwork for those; once it grabs one cover (it will grab as many as there are tracks...so click stop)

i have spent a good amount of time and now have maybe 95% out of 500 covers, not bad.

anyone noticed that SOME covers simply DO NOT preload? i wonder what file format that is...and if there is a fix.

Sorry for the OT, but there's no other way to contact decksnap here or I'd have sent a PM.

Speaking of your cat's breath: have you tried feeding it some greens? I have 2 cats here that, I recently discovered, like fresh spinach. Weirdest thing I ever saw our cats do. One of 'em actually loves the stuff and will eat it any time, apparently.

You know "My cat's breath smells like cat food" is a Simpsons reference, don't you? Ralph Wiggum said it if I recall correctly...
