I love the Genius play lists and the Genius bar on the right. I used the Genius bar for a couple hours finding new bands that I would have never heard about otherwise. The Genius play lists actually worked really well and were very accurate. I think I'm going to use this new feature a lot.

Genius

Maybe I'm just paranoid....but is anyone else concerned about the fact that apple is collecting info about your library? Does it say anywhere what...kind....of info they are collecting, and who they are going to give it to once they have it?

Mainly whether you're music is downloaded or not, sick the dogs on you...etc. Very slim chances I know...but still...just thinking.

Is it me or did iTunes get even worse at playing back videos?
I wish there was an option to play videos with an external player. Basically do "show in Finder" and then "open with Quicktime Player" and update iTunes with play count and location inside the video. I mean, Quicktime plays everything just fine. Why can't iTunes?

Well, the mini store does basically the same. Or did it? Seems like it has been replaced by genius...

Grid view is slow and choppy on my Mac Mini (1,83 GHz C2D). Takes a while to load the artwork when scrolling. Even worse than iPhoto 08... I wish Grid view would display the track list next to the album art when there's just one. Try searching for a specific song in grid view... you have to double click the album cover to see the track name you're about to play...

Guess I'll revert back to list view.

EDIT: Even cover flow is unusable now... choppy as hell :-(

Click on "more information". It says it sends the title, count, etc. to the itunes store together with a specific unique "anonymous" Genius ID. The ID is not connected to your iTMS account. Though it also says it includes statistics of what you bought in the past when you use Genius. The information connected to the ID will be shared with other users.

Most of itunes did get much faster, but it takes forever to get to the ipod status section after you connect it. I click on my ipod and it hangs for a good amount of time before switching over.

Just upgraded to iTunes 8. I really like the changes they made, and the genius device they added. It's a nice improvement.

Is there a way to turn off genius again? The iTunes Store arrows on the playing track really annoy me.

I'll give iTunes 8 a few days, if I still don't like it, I'll get iTunes 7 back (thanks Time Machine).

"Turn off Genius" in one of the drop down menus.

Well, I'm giving up on Grid view. Though it's a great idea and I wish I could use it, the sorting can't do what I want. Whose bright idea was it to not provide a way to turn off the secondary sorting?

iTunes '08 is great, but they really needed much better TV Organization (Even in grid mode every season shows up...why can't there be folders for shows, then by season like there is for msuic, ie, artist, then albums listed). There also needs to be a separate Music Video section, not just a smart playlist.

Better Tagging that actually rights to the files is a must have, and it very disappointing that it was not included.

Genius is actually really amazing, and I never thought it would be something I would have used.

Those Arrows are NOT related to genius. You used to be able to turn those off but not anymore, at least not through the GUI.

Disable them with this terminal command:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE

I noticed a paragraph about Sales Tax. Anyone know if it was there before, and what it really means? I didn't think there was any sales tax for buying stuff on iTunes. At least, I haven't had to pay any yet.

It may be CA state law. Here in WA, if an online retailer has a physical retail presence, they must collect and remit sales tax to the State. Since we have four Apple Stores, I am charged tax when I purchase from the iTunes store.

Me being the total OCD-er, what really bugs me, is the fact that some of my genres of music (E.G, Indie), aren't covered by the quite cute covers for genres. Is there a way of adding your own?!

iPod Not Syncing

Anyone having this problem. My iTunes 8, after i installed it, does not recognize my iPod 80GIG. Anyone having the same problem?

itunes top bar, the dropdown menu Store, click the Turn Off Genius to to turn it off.

So far so good. It does seem intuitive, and you can hit refresh if you don't like the choice of songs.

@papiti, I have a 5th gen ipod, 30 gb and it found it nicely. Was the iPod set up under windows?

Ok Fixed It.

Ok, I figued it out. My bad. I had parallels running and it was recognizing my iPod as an external drive. Dumb Me!!! LOL:eek::eek::apple:

I don't think Genius is anything like Pandora. Pandora analyses components of the song such as instrumentation, form, meter, etc. while Genius only analyses the artist and genre.

For instance, the Genius playlist for a song from the score to Finding Nemo gave me a song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Sure, it's a soundtrack, but is there ANY relation other than that? Not at all. I could do the same thing by sorting by genre and putting it on shuffle.

I hope it gets better sometime, but there is no way to 'thumbs down' a song that you dont think fits in the playlist like you can on pandora. It will probably take a while to really understand people's listening habits.

EDIT: also, when I made a playlist of "Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish and then "Drunk Again" by Reel Big Fish, I got very very similar results. Sell Out is a ska song that's fast and has a prominent horn section, while Drunk Again is a Wurlitzer-driven 6/8 bluesy ballad. I think it might only be based on Artist right now...

Yes. I've not got any VMs running and iTunes just ignores the iPod (same model). Ironically, the iPod itself says "synchronising" when it's plugged in, but nothing actualy happens, and iTunes doesn't start.

Not impressed. You would think they had got iPod synchronising pretty much working properly by now. "It just works."

it seems like a lot of people were knocking the genius feature, but now that a lot of us have tried it, it seems to be getting good reviews. I really like it. It's a quick way to make a playlist.

I'm also real happy that NBC is back. To me, that's great news.

For those that are having trouble with missing album artwork in itunes 8 like I did, all you have to do is play a song from the album you are missing artwork in, and it will find it. Hope this helps.

actually, this genius feature is... well, genius. I'm listening to iTunes and I look to the right and I see songs I'm missing. Naturally, I purchase them. These are songs I forgot all about. People that claim Apple is losing it are nuts. They gave me convenience and they are going to make a killing on that. That's good business.
