iTunes 8: HD TV Shows, Grid View, Genius Playlists, NBC

It should be noted that a dual-core 2Ghz processor is required for iTunes HD show playback.

This means the currently shipping bottom-of-the-line Mac mini model cannot playback HD TV Shows properly.

Then neither can the Macbook Air...which would be ridiculous. I'm gonna try that out tomorrow.

I suspect this has already been reported here, but it appears that there is a problem with the iTunes Store and the "free" downloads. After downloading and installing iTunes 8.0 I get either an "unavailable" tag after adding a free download to my shopping cart OR the download fails with an error that the iTunes Store is unavailable.

I've seen similar reports elsewhere, so this looks like a real problem.

Hard to believe, but it's beginning to look like Apple is having another troubled product intro.

Work's fine for me.....have you tried a reinstall and or a logging in/out with your account?

I think he means in the Browser window - and I don't know how to it turn off either? I have looked everywhere! I don't use 'genre' as this differs from what I would use and don't want to have to change every genre when downloading songs, so I just don't display in the browser. Well now, don't know how to do this?

And Agathon, I like your version of the mobileme avatar better than mine!

check my post (and another's) on page 14 of this thread.

Interesting to note that Podcast settings have been moved out of iTunes preferences into their own little window only accessible from the Podcasts list.

Further interesting to note that the setting "keep all unplayed episodes" still doesn't work properly. If you finish listening to a podcast and don't move on to select anything else, refreshing the list will not remove said podcast. Shouldn't this simply be based on 'Last Played'?

Finally, although I'm not sure what needs to be updated to fix this, in the App Store, the "Customers also bought" list still lists the wrong categories (the same category as the app you are viewing) for listed apps.

Anyone see multi-library support in iTunes 8? Just wondering if I can finally hold both Apple lossless files and 128kbps conversions within the same iTunes interface at the same time in separate libraries of "quality," so as to fit more on my portable devices (iPod, shuffle, iPhone).

I bet no.

That's right. No. :(

How is the performance???

I've read lots of pages of comments so far (but not all of course) and I haven't seen anyone comment on how good the performance is on the new itunes! iTunes 7 is super slow and gives me lots of beachballs on my G4 even though all my other more powerful software still runs fast and responsive. So does iTunes 8 run faster and not give as many beachballs? And is it crashing since it's still a .0 version?

Have you tried any of the NBC free downloads? These show up as HD but they always appear as unavailable after you add them to your shopping cart. I was finally able to download some of the SD content, but not from NBC.

I just installed it, but actually, scrolling through my (admittedly small) library does seem surprisingly fast now, and I'm on a circa-2004 1.5 GHz PBG4 with 1 GB RAM. It takes...I guess, almost as long to open initially.

However, the "improved" new version of Magnetosphere looks like absolute ass compared to the original. I'm glad I had the real thing installed from who-knows-when.

Try clicking the playback option button located in the group of buttons at the lower left of iTunes. Try setting the playback loop to play back the song once, then continuous playback, and then none. (grey)

had the problem where itunes would only play 1 song and then stop, forcing me to double click the next song, did what DMann suggested, just clicked around with the shuffle and playback buttons for a bit and then everything worked fine again. NICE

It's not mine. Someone else made it the day MM was released and encouraged people to wear it as a badge of despair.

I should change it because MM has worked flawlessly for me since then.

But hey, I'm bitter like that. ;)

Forgive me if this has been posted already, but iTunes 8 remembers your custom CD views, just like it used to back in version 5! :D

Thanks mugtastic. I was clarifying what the other poster was trying to ask and had the same problem. Missed the feedback earlier in the thread - tend to skip posts here and there when the count gets up to #400 and I starting at #1 - crappy being half a day away in time-zone terms, everyone else is cruising away while I am sleeping and I have a lot of catching up top do once awake!

And I have to say that Terminal is not the way to have to do things like this - why do Apple keep changing simple functionality that a lot of people seem to use, yet Apple removes for some reason? iTunes is a great piece of software all things considered, and I understand with Apps, Ringtones, Movies, TV Shows, HD content, etc that things may be getting bloated, but at the end of the day you want to keep the basics consistent as a majority of us still use iTunes primarily for music

I am voting negative on this story because there is no way to get rid of the Genius panel without turning it off and on, which means continually logging in and out of iTS. This is ridiculous.

Nevermind. Found the button. :p

Yea I was about to say... there's that button right next to it...

Like this version

I'm liking this update. Not alot different but it seems to be pretty good. I will not use that genius feature though. Before you agree to the terms read carefully and think about it.

*feign large surprise*

No real purpose to upgrade then, sadly, other than rumored better sound quality in iTunes 8.

Come on, I thought Apple was onto something when they began offering on-demand transcodes down into 128kbps audio for the shuffle more than 2 years ago! I would take even that now for my iPhone. Ah well, maybe we'll see it in another year or so when the proletariat start filling up their devices with [the as yet not offered] Apple lossless from the iTMS.
