guys, it just won't work here. iTunes 9.0.1, OS X 10.5.8.

renamed 100 .m4a files I bought for €3 at the iTunes store to .m4r, removed the .m4a files from the iTunes lib and drag&dropped the .m4r files onto iTunes 9.0.1.
result: I get 100 new entries of kind "Ringtone" -- but they're all in the normal Music section, not in the Ringtone section (and thus not syncable to the iPhone).

What's going on??? :-(
Any help out there?

Thanks a lot!
Stefan.

Did you import each file to Garageband, trim to 40sec export to aiff, rename to .m4r then import? Maybe they show in songs because they are too long?

okay, here's the trick: even if the (<= 30 seconds) files you bought from the iTunes store are AAC files ending in .m4a you HAVE TO convert them once with iTunes into (again) AAC files.
THEN save them to a folder (say, on your Desktop), remove the originals from iTunes, rename the .m4a files to .m4r and drag&drop them back into iTunes.
NOW they appear in the Ringtones section and can be sync'ed to the iPhone.

:)

I have to say, i came on here looking for the same answer tha ericinboston did. I didn't understand why when i rightclicked the song it didn't say Covert to AAC and no one was really helping him with that BUT then when punkrockmonk said it was the import setting I quickly realized that i had changed my import setting to MP3 on the last version of Itunes and felt like an idiot because it had nothing to do with the new version. But all and all i'm happy i read all the way through because you guys had me laughing and i also found the answer i was looking for. THANKS AGAIN!

ericinboston's procedure worked, I believe, because of one key difference from the old method (btw, I am on XP) and that was to convert a WAV/MP3 or whatever source format in an EXTERNAL (non iTunes) utility. That was the key. I had a ringtone that I converted using iTunes 8.x and it works well on my 3Gs even after updating iTunes to v. 9. However, when I converted another lick using iTunes 9.x (following same process of changing extension to "m4r") I was able to drag the file into my Ringtones folder and it even SHOWED UP in that folder on iTunes but it did not Sync onto my phone.

After poking around I started to compare the files and the only substantial difference I could detect was the version of iTunes that I used to encode with. So, in iTunes under the "Get Info" for a file, one of the fields says "Encoded with: iTunes vX.X.X.X". I did a little test and used a 3rd party utility to convert the file (in my case a WAV) into an mp4. I changed the extension, dragged it into iTunes and it synced and worked great.

Just my 2 cents worth.

neither nor helps.
1) since iTunes 9 you can't drop anything onto the "Ringtones" (or any other) section of the Library. If you drag&drop something there the whole Library and it's subitems are highlighted with a rounded lightblue rectangle.

2) double clicking the .m4r file in Finder does the same: it occurs in the normal Music section, not in the Ringtones section.

:-(
I had similar problem but have found a solution. Copy your ringtones (.m4r) in Music\iTunes\iTunesMedia\Automatically add to iTunes folder. It will automatically show in the ringtones section in iTunes. This works for any mp3 files as well.

help with changing the extension?

So I've been following along here and have been stumped on the step where you change the file extension. The "m4a" now shows up as a file type, as opposed to part of the filename and I can't figure out how to change it to m4r. I'm on a windows machine (XP3) (eek, am I allowed in here??) and running iTunes 9.0.2.25.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

can only move some ringtones

I managed to create a few ringtones but now I seem to be a bit stuck. All of the created ringtones are in the devices/ringtones folder of my itunes but I can only see two of them in the device itself (settings/sounds).
All of them are 30sec or under. Can someone explain to me why I can only see 2 out of 6?
Running itunes 9.0.2 and osx 10.5.8

ringtones downloaded?

excuse me if this is a silly question, but i have just started playing with my songs to convert into a ringtone. I created one from a CD that i own that i had copied onto my computer. Am i still able to make a ringtone from the songs i have purchased from itunes and is it legal to do so? as apple are aware of what is in your library i am concerned about breaking any laws.

I have the same problem of not being able to make created files appear in my ringtones folder. They are .m4r files, i have tried adding them from both my download folder and the ringtone folder in itunes and i have done it before and had it work so i am a bit confused. Any help would be a appreciated

Now to settle the dispute between you two...

The convert to AAC option (or whatever sound format you want) depends on your default importing file type. So if your default importing filetype is AAC, it will give you the option to convert to AAC. Likewise if it were MP3, it would offer conversion to that. Happy?

I've just tried it using the same process that I had been using in iTunes 8, and when opening the .m4r file from the desktop it played the .m4a file in the music library, as you said. I then moved the .m4r file to iTunes Music > Ringtones folder, and when opened from there the file played in the Ringtones Library and synced to my iPhone normally.

One extra step than it used to be, but it's still possible.

EDIT; Played around some more, and am now able to .m4r file from the desktop - as long as the shortened .m4a file has been deleted from the iTunes library prior to importing the .m4r file.

I've just found out this too.... I'm using OS X.5.8, iTunes 9.0.3 and an iPhone 3GS purchased on march of 2010. It works

I have had the same problems- I can do all the steps as in renaming, dragging to desk top , it appears in the ringtone section but will not sync to my phone. I have gone back and changed the time in options, and I have deleted the 15 second aac file in my library. PLEASE , SEND HELP!

Converting AAC on iTunes 9

Goto the advanced tab in the itunes menu bar. You'll find what you need there after highlighting your song in your playlist.

iTunes 9 Ringtones

I have renamed aac files to m4r, I have dragged them to desk top, deleted the shortened version, I have dragged to library and library does not highlight by itself ALL the categories highlight. It doesappear in my ringtones "library" as well as inmyringtones "tab" when I click on device. I should also mentionit does play in the " library" section of ringtones, and I am only using 15 seconds not 40 and I am not using garage band. I have also gone to advanced created an acc file. What am I doing wrong? Missing? Itshows up everywhere it is supposed to be but the stupid thing will notsync.

ok one more time and I give up- I am on a Mac, I have done EVERY step correctly. From a cd that I own I ripped it into itunes it is an acc file before I convert it, I am only using 15 seconds not 40. I have highlighted the song , went to advanced clicked on "create acc file" renamed it m4r. When I drag to my "library" all of the other fields are highlighted in light blue like the other persons. However, it appears in "ringtones" (in library section) and it appears in ringtones under my device. In the "ringtones" section under library if I click on it it will play. I have deleted in the options after I " GET INFO" the converted time. The song is back to normal playing time. When I TRY to sync it Sync is checked,so is "sync only selected". I have tried sync only selected and sync ALL , with the same end results it does not work for me. I went to myxer.com and lo and behold it renamed my file/ringtone as a m4r- what gives?

it used to work for me before iTunes 9 but now it tells me that my Ringtones are synched and they even show up on my iPhone "inside" iTunes, but when i check my iPhone there's nothing there. So what i have to do now is SSH and put them manually in which is kinda annoying ...

itunes 9 ringtone

ok so I have done every step that everyone else does on this forum, and thank you for all of your help, however these steps are not working. I have dragged it into the " ringtones folder" I have dragged it into the "library" ringtones, and it just will not work. I do not know what SSH stands for - please explain in detail as obviously I am coming off as a moron who cannot follow SIMPLE instructions.:) Yes, my preferences are and always have been aac files in my settings, no problem there! As for myxer.com- There is a site called," do not call registery, they accept cell as well as home numbers, just a heads up in case you did not know.
The ringtone shows up where it is supposed to be and shows up under my device " ringtones" I have dragged it into the "ringtones page" and it still will not sync. I have double clicked and it plays but will not sync. I have NO trouble converted and getting it delivered where it should be, but syncing is the issue here. Thank you for ANY help!!

is your iPhone jailbroken if so install "Open SSH" in cydia so u can get access to your file system on the iphone. then u can just simply drop the ringtones into your "Ringtone" folder on the iphone. this might not be the easiest solution but its the only one that worked for me ...

u might as well try to google how to use SSH for your iphone

No my iphone is not jail broken- never has been. The steps I have been describing came from a video on cnet and it worked fine until the updates. I applied the ringtone in January/ February. Am not willing to jailbreak as this voids my warranty, not an OPTION. This should work without jail braking my phone- it did so 2-3 months ago. I give up but, thank you for all of your help!:(

Do you have your media (music, movies, etc.) set to *manually sync*? If so, that applies to ringtones too. You have to drag them to the tiny iPhone icon on the left side, under Devices.

Oh my gosh! Ok my settings used to be "manual" as of 1o minutes ago they are again ;) I have never dragged or had to drag to the little "device".Per your instructions I have done so. A message popped up saying it could not download because the file could not be "located" ok no big deal: do over- I did, it showed up everywhere it is supposed to like I stated in all my other posts. However THIS time I could actually see under the " PROGRESS WINDOW" for lack of a better description, (under the iTunes logo middle of page above the ringtones tab) that it did download. I am getting closer to a solution however it still will not sync.:confused::( disgusted beyond words

Delete the ringtones (and possibly any music files with the same name) from iTunes and then reimport them into iTunes. What it sounds like you're experiencing is like what happens when someone emails you a MS-Word file. You double click on it, make changes, and save it... BUT you are saving a temporary file. So the next time you go into Word, it's not there (particularly after a reboot). This behavior happens in iTunes if you do NOT have the 'Copy on import' option checked (it's checked by default). So you're really not copying the ringtone into iTunes... just a pointer to the file. And if it's temporary, the pointer will still be there, but the file it points to will be gone!

What I tell our users to do is to SAVE the ringtone file somewhere permanent, like your Documents directory. THEN, open it in iTunes. That way, even if you don't have 'Copy on import' checked, if the file is kept permanently, the pointer will still work.

Same problem here. I actually successfully created a ringtone from a voice memo an then after that no luck. The one i'm trying to do now does not show up on the selected ringtones tab. Anyone figure this out yet?

Ok i think i got it. I think it was because my ringtone was right over 40 seconds.

In the past I have just used garage band. It is easier. I just add the files to the garage band. Shorten it to the respected length and bing bang boom. A free ringtone.
