Early last evening, the Mac App Store and iTunes App Store began having intermittent connectivity problems that we originally reported on our Mac Blog. The issues were widely reported in many geographic areas though the problems came and went for individuals. The issues, however, have persisted all night, representing one of the longest durations of connectivity issues with the App Store ever.

Late this evening, Apple has started emailing developers to let them know that their developer portal iTunes Connect will be undergoing maintenance throughout the day on Wednesday (emphasis ours):
iTunes Connect will be undergoing scheduled maintenance on Wednesday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PDT.

During this time, iTunes Connect will still be available. However, pricing changes made between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PDT will cause the app to become unavailable for purchase until maintenance is complete, at which point the app will become available at the new price. To avoid interruptions to the availability of your apps, do not make price changes during this time.

Lastly, customers may not be able to purchase apps in the Mexico, U.K., Australia, Switzerland, Japan or Norway storefronts during the scheduled maintenance.

Regards,
The App Store team
It's not entirely clear if the maintenance is related to the downtime, but it seems likely. The window of time covers the entire day and, Apple says it could actually affect customer purchasing in many geographic areas.

While Apple is expected to also release OS X Lion to the App Store in July, the duration and scope of this maintenance seem beyond what might be considered normal downtime.

This morning, on the 13 of July 2011, in Singapore, I too found that the App Store on my iPhone 4 couldn't load. I mean, it could load but it would just stay there; forever loading and never load completely. This, I suspect, caused my iPhone 4 to search even harder for a better 3G signal in the vicinity and throughout day, causing my battery from a 100% full charge in the morning to drop sharply to less than 9% at around 2pm in the afternoon.

I'm not sure, but it could be a related side effect.

I didn't and still don't think it's my iPhone 4 handset itself that's causing the problem because I checked Twitter and Safari and all my other internet based apps including Mail, Weather, Stocks and Maps and there were no problems whatsoever. :)

This can't have been intentional.

I really hope Lulzsec hasn't decided to attack Apple. It probably has the most credit card numbers stored, next to the credit card companies themselves. And going after emails and passwords has been their modus operandi in the past.

Thats interesting, I have noticed recently that downloads have been much slower from the app store than usual. Could be coincidence.

I wonder if its data centre teething problems, if these services are using the new data centre.

I think it is in preparation of Lion

Highly doubtful given that the MAS was setup ready for lion ages ago and has been serving up dev builds perfectly fine.

More likely a DDos or server attack...I'm sure we'll see an announcement from one of the "hactavist" groups at some point!

Could be a maintenance / preparation gone wrong...?

Perhaps.

No one has claimed it, so seems unlikely. I'd expect if someone was responsible for it, they would be bragging about it.

I doubt that, Apple has a history of "taking down" sites for basic or sometime maintenance stuff (ie; The Apple Online Store)

I think it's because of Lion, and making sure, it all works smoothly. They want to avoid a MobileMe launch repeat.

...

Can you imagine Steve going around asking people "Were you apart of the Lion MacApp Store launch" then holding a meeting going:

Steve: "Can somebody tell me what the Lion Launch via MacApp Store is suppose to do?"

gets satisfied answer

Steve: "So why the f@#$ doesn't it do that!?"

I am from Australia and I can purchase apps from the Mac App Store. So I dunno what the issue is. It's not happening for me.

This is interesting. Last night I had emails from apple saying my credit card details had been changed and that items had been purchased from a new device. So I logged in to iTunes to find pre paid credit gone and an app downloaded called texus holdem as well as in in app purchase had been made. So went to go change my password to notice that my credit card details had been removed!! - all without me knowing.

I really hope this isn't some kind of attack but this has coinsided very well with what happened to me last night (gmt 20.30 ish)

Will be cancelling my card today just as precaution and inresponce to reading this post

Weren't Apple recently warned recently about a security flaw in their site/store? I seem to remember seeing something somewhere a hactivist group had warned them back in May about something they hadn't got round to fix yet.

Personally I'm leaning towards DDoS on this one. Either that or they're increasing network bandwidth. Imagine thousands downloading 4GB on Lion's release day. That's gotta put a strain on the internet in general!

EDIT: Here's a link to the hacking story on Mashable: http://mashable.com/2011/07/04/anonymous-apple/

This couldn't be Lion preparation. This time Lion would be treated as regular app for AppStore, and you know uploaded new app hardly bring it down. There are thousands of changing and updated apps everyday. If Apple bring down their AppStore for each update, I think it wouldn't survive for 3 months.

As much as I wanted Lion to be available, I don't want to get hopes up high. It's different from Apple Online Store which sells Apple hardwares. They have limited amount of update each year, so bringing down Online Store for a few updates each year is rational

AppStore? That's not the way it's done

Couldn't it simply be the migration to that giant serverfarm in South Carolina? That must be one hell of an operation. And I guess they want to move the whole operation of iTunes store and iOS and Mac AppStore there before the Lion sale and iOS beta's with iTunes match. So that would have to be around now. It would seem bizarre that you could move such an inordinate amount of data without having outages.

DoS seems hysterical speculation at this point...

speculation? Yes but hysterical? No.

Apple always notifies us some way prior to something like this happening if it is something they had planned to do. This is Apple, remember? I was browsing the App Store on my iPad last night and was having all kinds of problems from apps not loading to not being able to load pages. I believe it was something out of Apples hands so therefore has nothing to do with scheduled maintenance.

Oh no! I won't be able to purchase apps from "the Mexico"!

If it's an attack, we'll find out sooner or later. Apple won't be able to be their habitually clandestine selves when dealing with millions of lost credit card details.
