iTunes Countdown to 100 Million

fracai won the sweepstake

Congratulations, within 5 minutes.

We'll do it all again in 5 hours and 32 minutes

And Fracai if you would like to give me your email address, I'll send you a gift certificate, once I can get on to the store again.

if they get that kind of spike from people trying to win an iPod, what kind of spike do you think they get when it closes in on 100,000,000 and people are trying to win the powerbook.

Wow, this chart is fascinating:

http://itunescount.tijdweb.nl/index.php

Sales rate spiked up to over 700 per minute, then down again to 500 or so...

For the record, a *sustained* rate of 700 per minute would add up to over 7 million songs per week!!

With the dips back down to 400-500 territory, it sounds like they're more likely to hit 5-6 million for the week, which is still astonishing compared with the 3.4 million average they were up to just before the promo (2.7 million U.S. + 700,000 Europe).

Apple has come up with a real winning strategy to increase sales. I just hope they can keep up the pace long term. The hope would be they more will get hooked.

I'm fairly certain this means you can win both a 20g iPod and the grand prize. (And/or).

WOOOHOOOO

I WON!!!

NOT. Too bad I'm going to blow up a metric ton of fireworks this weekend (but not toooooo bad...) and won't be in town to download anymore entries into the contest. Looks like this will all be over by Monday, at this rate anyway. Maybe I'll be back just in time to download the 100 millionth song!

Is it true that you don't have to consume vast quantities of Pepsi to win? Thank goodness!

Thanks!

The relevant data is this:
2004-07-02 17:44:00 95101334
2004-07-02 17:42:01 95097798

So the 100,000 mark is reached somewhere between 17:42 and 17:44 europe time. So

is the winning prediction. Congratulations!

Great chart!

The funny thing about it is: there's a secondary spike just after the 100,000 mark; maybe someone put through a big purchas of songs, and just missed out! ;)

Thanks. These tracker sites are getting out of hand. I love it!

Cyberbob--I particularly like the "iPod Alert Level" addition, but shouldn't it be the other way around?

i.e., "Elmo" (Red) should be reserved for High Alert (buy now!)

"Oscar" (Green) should be for Low Alert (do not buy)

You have it vice-versa.

I'm backwards from the terror alert level, but it follows the MacRumors Buyer's Guide. I just figured green would me go, buy now, and red was stop, don't buy.

nahh, it's like a trafic light now. plus, i used to have that homeland security level thigie in a sig on another board, it was funny

Hmmm...I still think it should be the other way around, since the "high alert" is equivalent to everyone getting geeked about watching the counter & timing their purchases, but (shrug) it's your call, of course :)

One of you chart-makers might also consider incorporating the following data as well for those interested:

Daily Average: multiply per-minute avg. by 1440
Weekly Average: multiply per-minute avg. by 10,080

Just a thought; I'll shut up now :)

this is fun.

I think Apple should continue this indefinitively after they reach the 100 mil mark. (Maybe change it to a 100 songs certificate every 100,000 and 1 iPod every 500,000 songs)

how many extra songs do you guys think each iPod given away sells?

If Apple makes let's say 5c per song of profit (after costs), at 400$ per iPod, they need to sell 8000 songs to cover the lost revenue (assuming that that iPod would have been sold anyway, otherwise would be less). worth it?

I'd say a free 15gig iPod for every 1 million songs, cheaper, but still a really great promo. Also, what about a free song every 100,000 songs?

i think it would be great to have a continuing "contest" like that. people who don't troll through all these mac forums and whatever could have a nice surprise if they just so happened to buy a song and hit one of those marks. too bad all of us will be watching very closely with all these counters and such!! ;)

Apple's marketing worked. I was part of that spike right before the first 100,000 ipod give away. I was already planning to buy some songs, I just postponed them a day.

That would be cool apple continue's this milestone prize giveaway. Maybe they could do this for some of their other products like .Mac account.

I still have $6 in my gift certificate balance, I'll save that for the 100,000,000.

cool

thanks grouse, I sent you a PM. If I can't win the Apple contest I can at least say that their promotion was good for me :)
so who wants to put up a prize for predicting the 100,000,000th song? a free album to the closest guess?

heck, we're already halfway to the next 100,000. this contest isn't gonna last long at all.
7 hours or so per 100,000 rounds out to about 2 weeks. but that's probably about as accurate as a ... well, something not accurate at all. in any event I'll put down my wager that the store hits it's mark at exactly 2 weeks after it hit 95... as reported by http://itunescount.tijdweb.nl/

My money's on 2004-07-16 06:44 EDT
and i'm probably hopelessly wrong ;)

It'd be awesome if they did continue free songs like that. One song every 100,000 seems pretty reasonable. my only qualm with a free 15GB is if you were looking to get a higher capacity. maybe something like a free 15 or the equivalent amount off a higher capacity.

I would be severely depressed if the 100,000,000th song winner was a PC user....or worse, a windows activist....
Why - this would be great! Give 'em a real machine (17" PB), an iPod, and a bunch of free songs. They wouldn't be a windows user for long. No better promo for Apple then to 'switch' a windows activist.

No, vast quantities of Pepsi won't be required, but it won't cost you any less money!
