iBrickr and SendSong ringtones still work after 7.4

I just checked, the iBrickr feature to upload ringtones (Fergalicious for my wife's number) and then Erica's SendSong to make an existing music tune on the iPhone a ringtone (EnjoyTheSilence) still work. Steve can keep his 99 cents for ringtones, and I'm patiently awaiting my $100 giftcard Mr. Jobs.

If you haven't Jailbroke your phone, check out iBrickr (for Windows PCs), it works flawlessly. It's a whole new iPhone once you put on the 3rd party apps! And then you realize it's just a micro-mac that makes phone calls.

Also, I'll agree with the 14 year old...I'm 38 and got rid of all my CD's years ago, now 100% on the PC or iPhone or older iPod. CD's are just too cumbersome and who wants to carry around a 9" wide CD player on their hip? For the fly-by-night music I listen too, what's the point of anything better than mp3 quality. I'm going deaf anyways from too many Rush and NIN concerts...

I'm going deaf anyways from too many Rush and NIN concerts...

Oh Lord. It's partly hereditary in my case, but I'm at like 40% hearing loss in both ears. I'm trying to count it as a blessing because beyond a certain limit of a good, but lower-end model 5.1 audio system and and iPod, iTunes or Apple TV with 128kbps AACs, I can't tell a bit of difference anymore. I do have to turn the closed captions on sometimes when we watch a TV program. Digital sound ovies I can usually hear fine if I bump up the center channel a few decibels.

I used to stand all night right freaking next to the amps at Edie Brickell concerts -- back when they were The New Bohemians and played a gutted old warehouse in downtown Dallas every or other weekend or so. Five bucks and all the keg beer you could drink, free. I blew huge money to get great seats for both local shows of Bowie's Glass Spider tour -- got to see Frampton live playing for Bowie, which was cool, because by then he'd pretty much stopped touring all over the place -- but Rush, I always settled for the nosebleeds -- yet at a Rush concert the cheap seats were their own kind of fun. Of course, as you likely remember, this was back when police and security patrols stayed out of the seats and left you alone unless you pulled out a machine gun and started firing it in the air.

It's the tinnitus -- the ringing in the ears, read "very loud high-pitched whine", that replaces the sounds you'd normally hear -- that's killing me.

Oh, I'm afraid to Jailbreak my phone and add 3rd party apps because I'm chicken. But yeah, it really is just a very small Mac with a phone and a unique interface. Even runs OS X. The Apple TV is the same deal: just a special purpose Mac running Mac OS X and a particular interface.

Now that people will be loading up iTunes with videos etc. to fill up their huge-storage Classics, Apple really have to optimize the app's code. It really is sluggish with large libraries.

Big notice on the Mac OS Installer.app site..."ATTENTION: The Mac OS X installer does not currently work with iTunes 7.4."

--DotComCTO

This has been resolved. Installer.app now works with 7.4.

Is it dark down there in the sand, where you've stuck your head?

"vinyl" is gradually destroyed everytime you play it, at a far faster rate than CD's or .mp3's. Once those scratches get in there, they're not coming back out without (*gasp*) digital processing.

Besides, I'd like to see you try to make a back-up copy of your 3,000 song vinyl collection in 20 minutes like I did with my iTunes music.

LOL Ok, I'll tell Manny Lehman, Abel, Vasquez, Rauhofer and the countless other club DJ's who still use Vinyl, as their heads must be in the sand as well.

Thanks for the insult.

Erm, how was it an insult? He was telling the truth. Its why top DJs generally have more than one copy of their favourite vinyl.

How do I get more regular ringtones on my iPhone? It's looking like I'll have to record the ring on my Panasonic cordless phone with an iTalk, then convert it in garageband, then upload it to the phone with a third-party app. Insanity.

Oh yeah, that whole "Is it dark down there in the sand, where you've stuck your head" comment wasn't insulting, silly me.

Yeah, I had a RAZR and I bluetooth synced it with my Mac. When you pair your RAZR with your Mac (now, assuming your RAZR isn't Verizon, which crippled the bluetooth object exchange capability on all their phones to make you use their "Get It Now" service), you can "Browse" the device through the bluetooth options. When browsing, you should see folders such as "Pictures", "Sounds", etc. As I recall, when you make a ring tone, just make certain it is roughly 30 seconds in length, mono (not stereo) and roughly 100k or less and in .mp3 format. Drag and drop the ringtone into the sounds folder (I think it was sounds, maybe there is a ringtones folder, it has been a while), and you're done. The ringtone/song should be in your phone.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, Apple has disabled ALL bluetooth to PC/Mac capabilities on the iPhone. Not so cool.

Its sound, if I recall.

This is the most insightful and accurate post thus far, IMHO.

Obviously, we are all a little torked by having to essentially repurchase something we already have. But as far as the rights of the artist/copyright holder go, they license their intellectual property under very specific terms and conditions. If they say, "we give you permission to listen to our intellectual property for your private enjoyment, but you'll have to pay extra for ringtones, which are essentially public performances of our work", then you have a choice--agree to the artist/copyright holder's terms, or don't buy their music. Write your own.

Or, if you are unethical, just find a 3rd party ringtone ripper, violate the terms of use as established by the artist, and screw him/her/them out of their absolutely legal and just compensation.

Apple is not the money-grubbing arm-twister here. To have the works of all of the major-label artists in their sizable catalog, they are absolutely compelled to do something like this. Appple is constantly having to strike a balance between end user use rights and artist/copyright holder rights. The 10-burns-only of a single unaltered playlist is an example of these sorts of compromises. So is a ringtone fee, unfortunately.

Of course, this goes back to the fundamental issue: the completely immature, selfish attitude of "it is my God-given right that anything my ears can hear should be in my iTunes Library."

You ringtone pirates all must have a great deal of contempt for the musicians you listen to and routinely steal from. It is NOT a victimless crime. And it IS a crime.

And no, I don't work for the RIAA. I am a recording artist on iTunes. I get $.59 for every download. I am the face of this "victimless" crime you evidently have no proplem perpetrating.

Ok, what about the music that is acquired legally that isn't on iTunes? Or if you have cd's of your own group/orchestra/band/etc and you want to make them into ringtones. This (through there means) is impossible. Luckally there are other ways of doing it (even though they are hampered by iTunes).

Installer.app doesn't work with the new iTunes ... anybody know how I could roll back to a previous version ? (I am not 100% sure why I upgraded in the first place)

Bummer dude....but thanks for taking the plunge for the rest of us. We needed somebody to jump out of the tree and tell us where the rocks were!:)

Wish I could help ya...I feel your pain. I'm sure they'll get us a new version before midnight, since they've been updating 3 times a day lately ;)

Edit - Told ya they were fast! Looks like it's working now.

OK. I have the new iTunes downloaded and I have the ringtones column viewable but I have not found one song with a ringtone icon by it. Has anyone found one yet or will they only be available next week?

If you did find one...what song/artist was it?

If you can't see the ringtones column, go to View > View Options while in the iTunes Store and make sure that "Ringtones" checked. From what I've seen though the feature isn't fully implemented.

While on MUSIC, and click "View", "View Options", no RINGTONES checkbox. When in iTuens Store, "View", "View Options" is disabled.

I downloaded 7.4. Am I missing something (besides free ringtones) or something simple for a poor PC dude?????????????

Hey guys... can someone post whether or not they've actually had any issues with iTunes 7.4 that doesn't relate to ringtones or their legal status? I don't have an iPhone, I just want to know if the program is stable enough to install on my MBP that it won't erase my music library or fry my laptop.

Live shows == $$$ not downloads...

Okay maybe you didn't figure this out yet, but where we all make our money is from LIVE SHOWS. Merchandise and ticket sales pay for everything and you get a little bit of cash from music sales (cd or download). Just accept it and move on, your fans will pay to see you live while everyone else will maybe pay a fifth of the time.

I would hope this has more to do with moral behavior than merely a religious mandate not to steal. But I appreciate your honesty. You are articulating the true position of every music pirate.

I hate the self-serving justifications many "flie-sharers" spew, and at least you aren't offering any. You know that what you are doing is wrong, and you just don't care. At least you aren't a hypocrite or self-deluded.

Hop you eventually have a change of heart.

I think songs as ringtones are downright annoying. I would much rather have a nice professional sounding ringtone which you can make in garageband rather than cropping songs.

IMO the only good stock ringtones are Marimba, Piano Riff, Strum and Xylophone...the rest are just taking up space. I made a couple of good ringtones in garageband before 7.4 broke iToner. Ambrosia says they are working on a solution on their FAQs page. Hopefully, they'll get it up soon.

Erm, how was it an insult? He was telling the truth. Its why top DJs generally have more than one copy of their favourite vinyl.
Not to mention THE top DJ (as of the past two years, at least) Paul van Dyk uses his Powerbook / Macbook exclusively at every session I've ever seen him at. Hmm...no Vinyl there. Plus Vinyl just doesn't have the capabilities that things like Ableton Live can offer DJs like Sash who are willing to put in the work. I suppose it's possible to do the stuff that Sander Kleinenberg is putting out with vinyl, but it'd be several orders of magnitudes harder.

Vinyl "can" have better sound quality if they are in absolute pristine condition with not even a speck of dust and mastered directly from analogue. Pretty much unheard of for modern vinyls, as everything is digitally mastered anyways, and especially in club environments, it's nearly impossible to keep vinyls clear of dust or smoke or fog. Thankfully those computers don't suffer the same way. It's interesting though, you can add a little bit of noise and cracks similar to a gently used vinyl track to a CD track, and play the two back to back for someone (original CD and edited) and claim that the second one is vinyl, and people will still claim it's better. It's just like adding bass to songs that don't have it in the original recording. People "think" it should be there, so it sounds odd if it's not.

I figured out how to make sure that after updating iTunes to 7.4 you can make sure that any ringtones you have installed yourself stay on your ipod and don't get deleted.

1. Download and install iTunes 7.4
2. Don't plug your iphone in!
3. Launch iTunes 7.4 and aggree to new licence aggreement. (if you dare)
4. Click on iTunes > Prefrences
5. Go to the iPhone tab in the upper right
6. Check "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones" to disable the automatic syncing process that happens when you plug your iPhone in.
7. Plug your iPhone in
8. Click on your iPhone under Devices
9. Click on the Ringtones tab
10. Uncheck "Sync ringtones"

You can then go back to iTunes > Prefrences > iPhone and uncheck the "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones" box and you should not have to worry about any of your ringtones being messed with.

Hope that helps some people!

I should have noted that my Ringtones were installed with iFuntastic 3.0.3

I am sorry if these steps did not work for everyone. They did work for me.

Imagine:
- Some one had bought 20 ring tones for their previous phones.
- someone creates their own ringtone ( they can write their own music )

Why can't that person upload their existing content on to their iPhone with iTunes? So lame. Its a shame Apple are virtually in bed with the RIAA.

You can use the third party software of course, but the ringtones will be removed on the next iTunes sync.
